Lichtspeer devs: Nintendo working on Switch achievement system

I've disliked achievements/trophies since day 1, because they change how people play. It changed from people talking about how they like a game to talking about how many platinums they have, or which game has the easiest achievements. They became more important than the game itself.

But I'm pretty sure Nintendo has talked about how they're connecting their "rewards" to MyNintendo. You'll get gold (as now for purchasing a game) and platinum coins (for achievements) to use on in-game items and for discounts on new games. That way there's no limit, and they can keep giving coins for how much/often you play. If you only play Mario Kart, you still earn coins every week. And then, maybe the Amiibo bonuses can be opened up as something you'll also buy with platinum coins. Want the Pac-Man suit, but not the Amiibo? Buy it for 250 platinum coins.

It makes sense to do, though I understand why they've resisted it so long (and why Miyamoto doesn't like them). There are probably games like Sonic Mania where the decision a person made on platform was based on achievements.

The folks saying they don't care gonna end up hooked.

Not really I have a PS3 & PS4, and I think Steam does them or did them? never cared in so many years however long they existed, so I'm not gonna care now.

You see In my day growing up with the Atari and onwards we never had them, so when they got introduced i'm like meh, also I don't play games online either so.

I would love to see an achievement system because for the games that I really really like it offers me more incentive to try different approaches/new things (e.g. Mirror's Edge and Splinter Cell Blacklist's pacifist runs were awesome!) as silly as it's absence on the Switch (As well as a few things about the design of the hardware) put me off from purchasing one for the time being until Nintendo produces a revision/*new* version down the line...

I'm glad many here are accepting of the achievement system, I remember enquiring about it upon Switch's release and was told by someone in the comments that "you must have OCD"... okay, thanks for the diagnosis doctor, don't see an issue in just asking about a feature that is available on every other platform and mobile OS or having to justify myself... :/

If Nintendo are going ahead with it, I wonder if they will retroactively implement it in older titles like on the early days of PS3? That'd be cool. I'm sure whatever shape it'll take it will have a unique/cool/thoughtful/quirky spin on it.

Hopefully true, i do hope they add achievements to their currently released first party games atleast tho, if it happens.

Just like Sony with PS3, late to the party, but worse since it's been a while and an expected feature, that also helps customers stick to your ecosystem somehow.
Some won't care and some will, but just add option to disable notifications and done.
Hopefully the have it by the end of the year

I think it would be prudent for Nintendo to keep achievements to a game by game basis rather than implement it system wide. Nintendo does not need to chase the Xbox/PS4 crowd, those folks aren't likely to buy a Switch because it has achievements. They are a different set of gamers and it would be naive if Nintendo think it can capture some of those folks.

Nintendo has always been at its best by taking innovated approaches to market conditions and at its worse when chasing vapid trends. If Nintendo is implementing achivements system wide, then that means Nintendo is bending over backwards trying to appease the MS/Sony third party developers. That is just playing to Nintendo's weakness in terms of perception, technical abilities and expertise. Rather than playing to its weakness, Nintendo should focus on its strengths: focus on the high quality first party output, partner with third party developers to cross promote IP and not try to get gimped versions of multiplatform games. I believe Nintendo's handling of the third aforementioned point will either make or break the Switch long term.

So many achievements seem so pointless, they are like an attendance award or something. My most recent encounter with achievements is playing DQ11, I was maybe 10 minutes into the game and on the bottom screen it shows that I got an award, I heard a song and saw confetti come down on the screen. I had received some special title for having broken 100 barrels and vases, and I immediately thought "Why? I was going to do this anyway, everyone is".

I am sure there are good and clever uses of achievements, but for the most part they just get given to you for doing mundane things completing something in the game that is required and expected. "Completed part one of the main quest" is not something that should be rewarded, but so often is.

For some people it actually was and that's okay.
I don't see how BotW needs them. It's an incredibly open-ended game that allows players to do as much or as little of the main quest as they want. Funnelling the experience through an arbitrary series of checkpoints is not a good fit.

I mean, I completely ignore achievements and I fear that their inclusion from the design stage onwards may (very rarely!) tweak games in ways that aren't necessarily enhancing my experience, but I know some people love them and need them to truly enjoy their games. So, no skin off my nose, really. As long as they stay the fuck out of my way. No obligatory chime and popup, please. Provide an option so they can pop silently in the background, out of sight, without slowdown/FPS hitching.

I just hope it will have a Nintendo spin to it. If we end up with just some boring numerical score (gamer score, number of plats) then it'll be a disappointment for me, personally.
I'd rather have my oft-repeated Animal Crossing interface to it. Every game ships with three pieces of furniture that you can unlock. Start the game, unlock the first one for Nooks shop. Finish the main story, unlock the second. For the third, go balls to the walls with completionist challenges and whatnot. Something like that.

I think he will have a hand in the achievement.

The majority of this almost 400 reply thread thus far is people coming in to say that don't care.

Do you post in every game announcement and news thread for things you don't care about?

I don't care but if they truly want to add achievements make them less obnoxious. A good way would be, Mario Odyssey as an example:

Bronze: Finish the Game
Silver: Find XX% of all moons
Gold: Find all moons

I don't think we need tons of stupid achievements like with most PS3/PS4 games in Nintendo productions. There are currently three types of achievements: just progressing in the story, finding all the things and do stupid stuff to get an achievement.

I mean the thread is apparently based on misinformation by the devs anyway, as indicated by the second picture in the OP.

What's with the 'trying to be smart' approach?

So, how do you guys feel about this? Yay or nay regarding system-wide Switch achievements? Is there anything you want Nintendo to bring to the table that Microsoft or Sony don't already?

Love achievements and don't get why people would be unhappy about this - if you don't like them, just ignore them.

I am concerned that Nintendo will go full Nintendo though and make out that this is a very new and difficult thing to implement and that we will end up with a system which is worse than what MS did 10 years ago.

Doesn't do anything for me personally but for those who are into achievements and such this is good news. Basically anything they can tick off the list of perceived basic online / O/S functions the better it will be for their sales prospects.

I'm sure I'll be happy having them in some games, but I want to be able to deactivate them.

If my Zelda tells me

****LINK OF DESTRUCTION : 100 SWORDS BROKEN ****
-75 MARIO POINT-

with a cute music in the middle of a Lynel battle I'm gonna be nervous.

If it's Stickers like it was on WiiU, count me in. Especially if you can use them on social media.

If it's more like Sony's and Xbox's set up, I'll probably not bother with it, and it'll be a non-factor for me. Good news for people into that stuff though I guess.

I hope you can disable them

Switch was not bought "only" by NIntendo fans or it would have the Wii U success.
As a Nintendo fan, i don't want them, it's annoying.

What's annoying about it? I mean, at worst you have a beep everytime you unlock something, that's all. It's not like that a giant screen pop on the middle of your switch telling you GREAT JOB M8!!

I wouldn't want anything that wasn't in the game there, including beeps. If this garbage is added, it has to be 100% removable.

I mean the popups and screenshot blocked text in persona every time are annoying.

Booo. Nintendo was my safe haven away from achievements. I always get drawn into them in some form. Prefer it when they are not there.

Errr, as you play the game you suddenly have a little windows saying basically "GREAT JOB M8!!!!!"... I always found that very annoying myself, i don't know what's so difficult to understand.... And it's not as if i'm completely AGAINST their inclusion, i just want the possibility to disable it... And since Nintendo don't like leaving choices to the player, i'm a bit worried.

Also, it's not as if i can't understand some people liking the opportunity to replay game with an objective like "not killing everyone", but i would prefer developers offering something like artworks in order to reward the player, not a trophy. (Maybe they even don't put something like that anymore becasue there is an achievement system... But i don't have any proof of that so i will stop there)

Can't wait for the sudden change of heart of Nintendo fanboys regarding achievements ;)

People which don't mind achievements will start talking, people which don't like achievement will talk a little at the start, like me, and then stop... Not a really exciting stuff.
Most of Nintendo fans have had others consoles or Steam so it's not as if they are not aware of achievements.

I agree, it's a game where you need to experiment various stuff yourself, would be very bad if there is achievements like "do X" "make Y with Z"

I plat-ed half of my games and still don't really care about it.

No, it cannot be, an actual Nintendo fan with an actual Nintendo character avatar (love the Black Knight btw) brings actual proof to the table that 'Nintendo fanboys' aren't a pathetic, predictable hive mind and are actually just perfectly rational human beings with preferences and stuff!?

Say it ain't so!

Regardless of if you value it, this is a basic feature used by every competitor in the market today, and so really should already be there.
