Very disappointing.

Some of the credit should go to the marketing department lol. The posters were great.
Glad this is doing so well WW with China. It would be sad if the best on screen Spidey under performed.

I'm tied for 5th closest and I'm 35 million off. Wow.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
$100M+ is incredible for a horror movie. Wow.

Also, what the hell happened to xaosslug's tag? Shane Kim's pre-cum shall still drench the non-believers.

Wind River looks set to pass Hell or High Water's box office total, though it doesn't feel like it has the same kind of buzz the latter had. Great news for Taylor Sheridan's future directing career.

Thanks to IT, this will probably end up being the highest grossing September of all time.

The previous record was $626M. After this weekend, September will have a bit more than $355M to go to hit that number. I could see IT making at least $150M more before the end of the month. If it has legs closer to the Conjuring films, it could make $200M+ more before Oct 1st.

This month still has Kingsman 2, Ninjago, American Assassin, Mother!, and the first two days of both American Made and Flatliners.

From that Hollywood Reporter article now:

Editors note: A rep for Sony has confirmed the posters are not officially sanctioned by the studio and were faked. The original story follows below.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I still can't believe IT is doing this well. And with all the positive reviews and word of mouth, the sequel is going to be huge.

Even though its been a good year for horror films, I think the upcoming ones are going to be flops. Jigsaw? Flatliners? Nobody cares about that junk.

Think that depends on how good it is. Seems to have more talented directors than it's previous ones.

Taking the discussion from last week's thread here.

I can definitely see a 3 multiplier or better here. Horror films can have great legs, and so far it seems like IT has really good WOM.

If IT can get to $360M or more, maybe even challenge Passion of the Christ for biggest R-rated film, that's not a level Thor will be able to reach easily. Especially with Justice League two weeks away from Thor.
It's time to reel in the excitement, I think.

If IT cross 350M, I'll happily sport a clown avatar (of your choice) for a month. I'm thinking 250M is where it'll end up.
If this weekend is at $120 million, 50% drops for the next 6 weekends puts just the weekends at $236 million. 60% drops for each weekend put the first 4 weekends at $195 million. You're going to be pretty wrong here.

Edit: Not to say that it's definitely going to hit 350, but it'd have to crater to end up at 250, and films with WOM this good generally do not crater.
50% drop for a horror movie and one that opened so high is exceptionally good, we'll have to wait and see if it can do that.

What do you reckon the success of this film means for the film industry looking into the future?

Every Stephen King book under the sun getting a movie?

Or more remakes of classics from the 80s?

I wouldn't be surprised at a new version of The Shining coming.

I wonder what Edgar Wright thinks of Baby Driver. Like, did he make a conscious effort to do a more "mainstream" film? Bigger than all his other movies combined lol

It's been a dream project for him since 1994. Usually, a dream project is shorthand for "thing the director wants to do that will make no money," but considering the box office performance of his other films, this is the rare occasion in which the opposite happened.

So Spider-Man actually passed wonder woman world wide? Honestly shocked.

Spider-Man Homecoming only looked to be trailing Wonder Woman because its Chinese release was 2 months late. Homecoming was always way ahead overseas. If you remove the $90M Chinese gross, Wonder Woman has made about $315M overseas. Homecoming was at around $425M before China.

Wonder Woman will finish about $80M ahead of Spider-Man domestically, but Spider-Man will be ahead by $150-170M overseas.

Bummed we don't have any "YEAH! Spider-Man!" gifs yet.

Could be getting so much mileage out of that right now.

I expect more big budget King film adaptations and HBO, Netflix, all the major cable channels thinking of what books they could adapt into prestige series. I totally expect a new Salem's Lot and at least a big The Stand show (ideally a show, maybe a movie)

HBO should fly under the radar and by the rights Richard Bachman novels, many say he is the heir to stephen king
