Switch version of Wonderboy: The Dragon's Trap outsells all other versions combined

With a rather limited portfolio on the new console, every release gets a place in the spotlight - and people are hungry to fill their game libraries. The developers who already have access to sales data seem happy with the results. Tuovinen notes that Frozenbyte's first Switch game, Has-Been Heroes, did very well, and Omar Cornut shares that Lizardcube have sold "more copies of Wonder Boy on the Switch than the three other platforms we released on combined."

That's pretty impressive. Take a look at the rest of the article as well, there are many more interesting bits about indies and the Switch.

Lock if old.

I imagine there's an overlap in audience between Switch early adopters and retro-game enthusiasts.

That's great to hear as it's a very special game despite some flaws. I'm slightly more surprised that Has Been Heroes has sold well. That game looked like a hard pass.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Makes sense...getting a portable and TV version for once purchase is tough to beat.

It's the exact same game on every platform except it's portable on Switch and looks gorgeous on that screen. If you have the option, Switch is the platform to own it on.

Perhaps one day this self fulfilling prophecy of "third party games don't sell on Nintendo hardware" will come to an end.

Well yeah, I felt no reason to get it on PC or PS4 so I'm not surprised. Should bode well for the already flourishing indy scene on the system, good stuff.

That's because Switch fans are starving for content. You know what Switch owners call Gamestop? The Bread Line. Cause they're starving. Updates are second helpings. eShop cards are called rations.

I've got more if anyone wants to hear them.

Amazing game. For all those games that run exactly the same on all platforms, Switch becomes by default the console I choose.

Awesome. I didn't end up loving the Wonderboy as much as I thought I would, but I'm super happy its successful.

HBH is a weird one... It takes a long time before you feel comfortable with its mechanics, but once you do, the game is actually pretty damn good. Definitely worth the $10 I paid for it.

PS4/Vita 2 for 1's?

You need both devices for that though.
If im buying those type of games and own a Switch the likelyhood of getting it somewhere other than Switch is rather low.

What do they call the Eshop then ?
Fine dining ?

My congratulations to Capcom execs for not greenlighting Switch versions of Disney: Afternoon Collection and Mega Man.

The collection is being handled by Digital Eclipse. The studio's "Head of Restoration," Frank Cifaldi,, says Capcom makes the final call about what systems the game is published on. "We're not involved in the decision-making process for specific SKUs," he told us. "But for what it's worth, we think the Switch is great, and would be a good fit for the kinds of projects that we do."

It'll be interesting to see how Sonic Mania does. That's been at, or near, the top of the eShop sales charts since it launched.

Has Been Heroes's likely got a big boost by Gamestop including it in many of their mandatory bundles for Switch pre-orders for several waves of incoming stock. Good for the HBH devs, but I know lots of people who were annoyed by the bundling.

Indies and smaller 3rd parties already know the Switch is a great platform for their games. Bigger AAA stuff is another issue entirely but developers know that the Switch is a growing platform with a very active, spending user base.

Yeaah! Happy it's doing well! I still need to get the game!

Capcom should take note. I bet both The Disney Afternoon Collection and Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 would find an audience on Switch.

Very easily seeing as those games started on Nintendo so that's an added nostalgia factor. And platformers typically do well on Nintendo so that's another factor! so many factors on why they would perform well.

You can get a PS4 + Vita for about the same price as a Switch + Pro controller. Just sayin'.

Think of it this way. How many people with PS4s and this game actually own a Vita that isn't a very small amount. A lot of retailers in the US don't even officially sell Vitas anymore.

Yeah and people wanting big meaty experiences are on other consoles playing the massive amount of already available games. (Zelda not withstanding of course)

This hardly addresses those goalposts.
I bought mario rabbids for literally 1 reason, which is that i hadn't bought a single game since mario kart 8 and was looking forward to buying nothing until mario odyssey.
People gotta play something, and yes im aware they're releasing a big a month, the problem is you cant force yourself to be interested in all of those.
People playing on ps4 and the like have a considerably bigger library to chose from
And by no means am i trying to downplay this, this is a great opportunity for indies to make quick cash all the while bolstering its lineup in return. Just dont go around expecting destiny or Battlefield to show up on switch next year just because street fighter hd sold well.

lol I read the topic title and thought "I bet some already posted the "Of Course! Switch users are starved for games!" Bullshit."

turns out the article itself took care of mentioning it :p

Since the january presentation it is obvious that Nintendo is targeting the retro/lapsed gamers audience with Switch which is a smart move both because Nintendo naturally resonate with this audience and the Switch concept is a good fit for them (older gamers with full job and family duty may find entucing Switch's "play everywhere and however you like").
By extension indie games with retro sensibilities find a fertile ground on Switch.

Disney Collection is an interesting one. That license won't hold forever. At some point this game will be de-listed.

And I'm super curious about Overcooked. That game is always top 5 in the eShop charts.

Glad to hear this. It looks great on the Switch screen, works great as a portable game as well as a console game and it came out at a point in time where the Switch library was relatively weak and in particular lacking great platformers outside of Shovel Knight (although now it has at least half a dozen great ones.)

Snipperclips hit 350k in its first month so I wonder if that could be used for any kind of benchmark. eShop charts didn't exist at launch, though, but I'd imagine it would have been at the top.

Minecraft must be past 350k now?

Just like with Okami and Zelda-esque adventure games, Capcom doesn't see a market for retro 2D content on Nintendo platforms.

Frankly, I'm not sure how anyone can look at this and not say "this is the raddest shit ever." Would absolutely love to see an original Wonder Boy game with these visuals.

This should no longer be news. Anytime a new system comes out, you should have some stuff ready for it. No more excuses for being 'caught off guard'. Decades of data shows that being the first and early on the system gives you a leg up.

My hunch is that the Switch version of Mania will come out on top. I remember a lot of folks here and elsewhere declared they were getting it for the platform, and it has near-BotW levels of attach in my Switch friend list. Not to mention that Sonic tends to do better on Nintendo hardware.

Unsurprising. It came out at a perfect time, when Switch fans were hungry for another game, and Switch owners as a demographic have proved highly amenable to retro gaming so far. And the portability obviously helps as well.
