The Witcher 3 controls like shit

Especially after playing open world games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Metal Gear Solid 5, which controls like heaven, The Witcher 3 feels like a fucking chore.

Just walking around is a suffering activity. And the animations are so poor. Not even going to discuss combat, but you can be sure it is not highly regarded for the most part because of the terrible controls.

It is such a pitty, because I want to experience the world and the story, but Jesus Christ, everytime I have to walk it is so slugish and bad.

Have you changed the option in there to alternative controls? Assuming you're on console, it makes a world of difference. I felt the same, and then changed it, and it's much better.

There is an option that eleminates the start up animation where he has to pick up speed every time he walks.

And no,the combat is fine and passable.

Everything about the game seems to have an intense input lag to it. Even the menus.

I swear I press the joystick forward and Geralt starts to actually move like almost a full second later. It's atrocious.

And then you try something like Zelda BOTW and the controls are so responsive and fluid, you wonder how CDPR could fuck it up so bad.

Eh, it's not perfect but I honestly can't agree with you. In fact, I don't think the general character movement and walking around feels all that different from Horizon. The combat isn't as good, but it's serviceable. Plenty of games that control way, way worse, I never really had an issue controlling Geralt except that he can't survive a 2 foot fall.

The game uses a number of blend animations on the default control scheme that make geralt turn with more speed transitions. Turning that off by using "alternative controls" improves responsiveness at 30fps or with a controller presumably.

Probably the best game of the generation for me - warts and all. It's a bit clunky but I wouldn't trade the experience I had with it for anything in the world.

Give it more time, if you don't warm to it there's no shame in walking away from a game you don't enjoy playing.

Edit: Yeah, the alternate control scheme is great. Switch it on and enjoy.

Yes it does. I had to stop playing after about 15 or so hours. Everything in regards to actually playing The Witcher 3 is bad. Everything else is great. I'm hoping Cyberpunk fixes this because I'd love to enjoy a CDPR game.

Yup Geralt controls like a drunk tank. Really unfortunate and at times very frustrating part of the game. Still a fantastic experience overall, but it was certainly a detracting aspect that on more than a few occasions really brought the experience down.

Really hope Cyber Punk takes note from other series with regards to movement refinements and the importance of fluid and solid controls.

Joke post? Alloy moves and plays great mecha ically, geralt doesnt, its not even close.

Sure does, but it's not enough to seriously detract from the game imo. The Witcher series has always controled like shit.

Yeah, alternative is so much better, too bad it came so long after launch.

I don't understand why they have not made it the default control scheme since it was patched in.

No it doesn't, otherwise it wouldn't be probably the highest regarded game of this generation.

Just because it's the greatest open world rpg ever created (fite me), doesn't mean it controls well. I mean it's ok and you get used to it but I could definitely see someone saying the controls are just bad esp if RPGs aren't a big genre for them.

What about it is bad? I helped my friend with a brief battle against these weird creatures, and didn't really notice anything bad.

Yea they game could have been so much better, hope they can improve on this aspect in cyberpunk.

This doesn't even make any logical sense. Witcher is praised for its RPG systems, writing, world building.... A game can be a masterpiece and have flaws.

They patched it several times and added a new control option for a reason.

No it didnt. Witcher 2 is mediocre with a controller, but perfect with mouse and keyboard. It controls so well and snappy with a mouse, it reacts so good and instant, it feels like a shooter honestly. Witcher 3 granted, when released, that fucking momentum when you turned or just started walking from a stationary position. Fucking realistic momentum, fucks up the game, like Max Payne 3. But with the alternate controls on, it feels good. Not best in class, but certainly we shouldnt see topics like this

I was not aware of this at all, can't wait to give it a try once the Pro patch comes out.

My biggest gripe with the game is the fact that you can't loot/interact/examine without letting go of the analog stick.
Not kidding, I didn't even mind the combat.

I agree. Controlling Geralt felt too loose and I felt delays on the combat. I have a very high tolerance when it comes to strange controls and mechanics but I couldn't play this. I just came off Bloodborne at the time too, which feels very tight and responsive. It's a shame because I really wanted to like this game as it does everything else so damn good.

It's still very bad even with alternative controls. I got used to it because I really enjoyed the game otherwise, but going back to it always makes me shake my head.

You made a thread to complain without trying the alternative movement? It makes a world of difference.

How would I know of this? I didnt even know there was a alternative control scheme. Even if I did I would thought the default one is the better option anyway.

I really wanted to get into this game but after playing MGSV back in 2015 I found it to be next to impossible. There are so many things i like about it and so many things are incredibly well made but the core mechanics are the worst parts of the game.

You don't become a GOAT controlling like /shit/.

It could be better? Sure, there is room for improvement. In fact, they already improved it.

Want to play a game with shit controls? Play Star fox. Not The Witcher.

Sure does! It's fucking terrible, and it made me put down the game.

The alternative controls fix nothing.
