Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen coming to PS4/XB1 (fall 2017)

"hello?" "this is vagina"
What have Capcom remasters been like? I get the feeling mostly shoddy? Want to buy this but loathed to if it's not a solid remaster.

The MT Framework engine typically ports and scales very well, so I expect this to be pretty much flawless.

I think it heavily varies by game. I believe DMC4 and DmC were excellent, while their Dead Rising ports were pretty rudimentary by comparison. But this will be my first Capcom remaster this gen, so I'm not speaking from first-hand experience.
Found it sub-£16 at Base btw - tempted but the chances of a slap-dash remaster are putting me off. Want to buy it in the hope a sequel comes out!

Ah cheers - will get it ordered

Maybe someone can give me advice here. I bounced off the first game because I hated having to run back and forth to do quests.

Is that still in Dark Arisen? No fast travel?

You get an item called the Infinite Ferrystone which lets you fast travel as much as you want, but you still arrive at the Port Stones (I think they were called?) and you lay those yourself. There's one in Gran Soren and one outside Cassardis, and as I recall the rest are pretty rare but you'd only need 2-3 to minimise the majority of physical travel.

They don't have much in common outside of some ideas and aesthetics in Bitterblack isle (the DLC area)

Think of this game as more of a traditional take on an open-world RPG like The Witcher III or Skyrim, but with a heavy focus on combat (that resembles something closer to a character action game like Devil May Cry or Bayonetta) rather than the focus on choice, story or exploration you see in in other RPG's like the ones mentioned above. That's not to say DD doesn't have those aspects, but compared to its peers it's clear the focus was on the games combat mechanics.

Which Classes (Vocations) should I do in my first playthrough I wonder I'm thinking Mystic Archer
Depends how much you care about min-maxing, as each class increases stats differently when you level up.

At the very least, you should play different classes to unlock their Augments, since you can use those universally and some of them are very useful.

Is the Mystic Knight any fun to play? I love magic swordsmen but if its just mages with a shield I dont think thatd be very interesting.

Haven't played it. If your idea of fun is tied to how powerful a class is for leveling or end game content though, then the MK isn't exactly the best class out there. That would be the Magick Archer (endgame), the Assassin (leveling + endgame), and to a lesser extent the Sorcerer (endgame) IIRC.

But play whatever looks more fun to you.

Damn. It's showing as currently unavailable for Xbox on Amazon.

Yeah, I've always liked the battle mage archetype. I.e., I like having primarily melee options with a few ranged attacks as well, preferably magic just because it's fun. Curious if this class would be a good fit for me.

It is. It's much more than "mages with a shield". It's a tanky swords(wo)man with defensive and offensive magical abilities. You can equip the mage staff and cast regular mage spells if you want, but I prefer the sword/mace + magick shield combo. With your sword/mace, you can do things like setup a vortex that draws enemies in and damages them, or setup a sigil that staggers and damages all enemies that walk in it (it's juggles them hilariously, tons of fun), or a ball of light in front of you that you attack which will then throw more balls of lights and the enemies around you.

The magick shield abilities are also fun if you like to do perfect parries. For example, an ice-buff shield, when performing a perfect block, will freeze the enemies in place, leaving them vulnerable to a devastating counter-attack. And you can also do various other defensive and offensive buffs with them.

Edit:

Holy cannon (the ball-of-light ability described above) is the only ranged ability of the Mystic Knight, as far as I remember. For a primarily melee class with magical ranged support, I suggest Magick Archer. Melee is gonna be daggers (warning, you can't block, but you can dodge roll at least), with some truly strong melee options too, and the magick bow abilities are among the most fun and spectacular in the game. It might seem a bit weak or underwhelming early on, but later, like in hardest area (the DLC expansion area), Magick Archer is the best class by far.

For melee/ranged without magic, strider and ranger are great too.

I played DD;DA for the first time when it came to PC and I played primarily as a Mystic Knight and I thought it was awesome. The look of the class and it's abilities are really cool when you figure out how to use them. The biggest problem with MK though is that they have arguably the worst stat growth of any class (heavily favoring magic defense IIRC) so if you spend a lot of time as one while leveling your offensive capability will be severely gimped. That means that in order to play one effectively you need to spend a LOT of time leveling up as an assassin or warlock and then only playing as an MK when you get to max or near max level, which totally defeats the purpose of playing one IMO. Dragon's Dogma's leveling system is pretty wack and imbalanced like that. You could play as one without min maxing and beat the game easily enough but I honestly had a really, really hard time trying to kill the final boss of the DLC area as a MK.

You actually can find quite a few of the anchor ferry stones and place them here there and everywhere. It isn't until later in the game that they become more plentiful but the game funnels you along in the beginning so it's fine anyways. End game is definitely convenient as a result of the multitude of stones.

To be fair, any class is good with periapt spam.

Sixfold volley actually cuts through everything like a hot knife through butter, even Death.

A sequel to this game has the potential to be one of the greatest games ever made. Sad that it might never happen. I think it was the fastest selling new IP of last gen too.

Oh, well. Whatever Itsuno makes next should be gold.

I think once MHW comes out and is successful, we'll see more of DD along with other tentpole franchises that Capcom has. I love the beginning of DA's main theme, the first 31 seconds are sublime, especially the start. Shit, I feel the same way about "Into Free" after listening to it. The songs start out great and then they fall off a cliff because their tones drastically change.

Tenfold volley + blast arrows + 4x periapts or bust :D
Damn I completely butchered the name and periapts. Been 3 years since I played it.

I swear by the DA main theme. The beginning is absolutely beautiful. The violin ;_;

I went for the £15.85 Base offer here in the UK, never managed to complete it on 360 but for that price, performance enhancements and a fresh lick of paint it would be rude not to go again.

They have it listed at October 13th though...hmmm

Well, rather than the sequel route, they went the online route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TcT_ShiMks
And it's been running away happily since 2015 apparently and even got stuff like attack on titan events

I adore the Combat and Enemy Design in this game (especially the big ones are extremely fun to fight against) but holy shit, it's just so immensely irritating to fight against the same enemies on the same fucking spot only minutes later, because I have to walk the way back after completing the quest...

Only Far Cry 2 was worse in this matter. I couldn't get past this "feature" or whatever this is.

This really bummed me out during my PS3 run to where I just gave up. I hated running around a curve knowing there would be 4 or 5 wolves waiting for me, and that just up ahead a bunch of harpies would attack. I hate respawns.

I might have mentioned this before, but I really wish they would have buffed the Warrior vocation so it had the same amount of available skills in combat as the other vocations.

As it is, making it through BBI as a warrior is the games true hard mode.

Even worse if you only mained that one class without knowing how the leveling system works in relation to your selected vocation.

It's so dumb how thry leave so many buttons unused for Warrior...

Looking forward to this next month.

Anyone want to drop any tips for a complete beginner to the game?

1. Look up what different inclinations mean when it comes to making your Pawn (A.I. Partner). People ignore this all the time and end up with useless pawns because they don't understand what you choose effects their behavior during battle.

2. Pay attention to your weight, it's really easy to get over encumbered and then you move like a snail until you drop heavy, often valuable materials. To avoid, make sure your depositing regularly into storage at your local inn or nearest camp.

3. Stamina is another meter you should be watching constantly, as even running will drain it.

4. Status ailments are very powerful in this game, certain statuses like petrification will kill you and a whole team of pawns incredibly fast if you don't have the proper medicine to fix it.

5. Time has an effect on the world around you, its gets pitch black outside at night and new monsters appear, NPC's live lives and will be in different locations at different times of the day, completing mainline quests can lock you out of side quests due to people no longer being available/alive etc.

6. Explore. There are several areas in the game you flat out won't see if you only follow the mainline quests.

7. Magick Archer is OP :)

In addition to the weight comment, you can offload items on to pawns as well. Be aware that if the pawns in question are not yours (i.e from the rift) you can lose those items. So only place them on your main pawn.

Clothes and armor are 2 separate sets of gear you can wear simultaneously. The combinations of how your character can look are endless! No other game does this, AFAIK.

Also, to actually get your own Pawn to the Rift to be used by other players, you have to sleep overnight at an inn.. Not by jumping into a Rift stone. Rift stones are where you can get other peoples' Pawns. (Not the other way around.)

I'd be all about triple dipping the PS4 one, but I recently ported my PS3 save to the PC version... With mods (not that there's many), there's no reason to play any other version, IMO.

And to top it all off:

Leveling up vocations is separate from leveling up your character.

You need to level your character to increase stats, and you level your vocation to access new moves for that vocation.

However, what vocation your using determines what stats increase when you level your character, so for example leveling up while playing a warrior results in more of an increase in physical defenses, while playing as a Mage will focus on building magical based defense.

This means for those of you interested in the endgame and being as powerful as possible, you need to switch vocations often and early on to make sure every stat you have is being properly leveled.
