Schumer, Pelosi announce deal with Trump to protect young immigrants; No wall

This pleases me on so many levels.

The hard-right congressman Steve King (R-IA) vented Thursday at the prospect of President Donald Trump striking a deal with Democratic congressional leaders that included what King described as “amnesty” for undocumented immigrants.

President Trump ended DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, on Sept. 5. The program shields undocumented young people who meet certain criteria from deportation. Trump has said he wants Congress to “legalize” the program, though he could also simply be passing the buck for the wave of deportations to come.

After a Wednesday night meeting with Senate and House Minority Leaders Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the President said Thursday that “We are working on a plan for DACA” to include increased border security funding. He said funding for his politically toxic border wall would “come later.”

King, known for his fiercely nativist views, was incensed Thursday morning in an interview with CNN’s Alisyn Camerota

“I think something is going to have to be reversed here with this President’s policy or it will just blow up his base,” he said. “I mean, this was a straight up promise all the way through his campaign.”

“I do think that maybe Nancy Pelosi hijacked the message a little bit and the President has to walk it back,” he added.

They were trying to grab your prize. They work for the mercenary. The masked man.
I don't know what the hell is going on anymore, but those pics of Trump's parents have blown my mind.

Looking at Trump's parents, he never stood a chance:

He's a fucking straight up cartoon villain I can't

Personally as a female I wish people would stop using looks as a way to insult females as if that is the most important aspect of us: "Who cares if she's a pos, she's ugly!"
As a person I would point out that I've seen plenty of insults pointed at Trump Sr, Eric Trump, Steve Bannon etc for their looks. I think they're all shitty people and it probably would be better to attack them aspects of their character than their appearance but it's noticeable that some people only take issue with it or declare it to be sexist when it's a woman being criticised for her looks.

lol at the "technically I'm already building thr wall"

We always knew this was coming. That the physical wall was going to be a metaphor and he would claim credit for the various existing border wall activities and call it mission accomplished. Securing funding for that as "border security" in exchange for the DREAM act would probably be a win for him, in the press and with the population, and let him move on to other things.

There is a very real possibility that Trump's only major legislative accomplishment throughout all of 2017 will have been signing amnesty into law for Dreamers. I'll take it.

Obstructionism, if I understand it right, is a form of protest to call out systematic abuse of power.

Almost poetically ironic that Trump, the embodiment of the privileged white status quo, threatens to become an obstructionist. Obstruct who?

Republicans, who control the House of Rep, Senate and White House, will become the obstructionists?

How would that even work?

... oh wait, exactly as it is right now lol

lol

That didn't last long.

It is possible to both keep people within the US and also not confer citizenship at the same time. Whether or not granting permanent resident status to dreamers counts as "amnesty" would then depend on one's definition of what "amnesty" means, which doesn't matter from a practical viewpoint.

all of this still makes me feel uneasy.

It should.

It shouldn't, it's great for DACA recipients who should be citizens and Dems are no closer to advocating for Trump policies.

It should. Until either permanent residency or citizenship or some kind of guarantee of non-deportation is established, the DACA people are still nothing more than a bargaining chip for him - and the value of that chip depends on how seriously the Democrats perceive Trump's threats to be.

Trump already backed out of the deal? Pelosi/Schumer shouldn't have politicized this as a "victory" for the Dems and a loss for Trump. Now it just puts the dreamers back in jeopardy.

Homeland Security Fail
But if they become obstructionists and dems already are obstructionists, don't they cancel out?

The "amnesty" that Reagan passed with the Immigration Reform and Control Act (and is raised on both sides for different reasons) basically granted those that entered illegally prior to 1982 permanent residence after 1 year.

"I'm not giving the Dreamers amnesty, I'm just supporting the DREAM act and giving them a path to citizenship."

Is Trump really THIS stupid?

Man. I'm amazed at how some folks still manage to blame the Dems. They didn't politicize it like that. The media did.

Trump on DACA: We’re not looking at citizenship or amnesty, “we’re looking at allowing people to stay here”

"I'm not doing a deal with Dems, I'm just doing what they want in exchange for border security."

"I'm not giving the Dreamers amnesty, I'm just supporting the DREAM act and giving them a path to citizenship."

Neither Trump, Pelosi or Schumer have mentioned the Dream Act, though, just that they want legislative protection for those eligible for DACA.
