Just checked amazon and I was surprised by the top spot for Xenoblade. I hope that game gets the sales it deserves this time around.

It's an all-star game with reused assets once again, it's not that it required big resources.

After low sales of previous Mario Party you'd think they would series to a rest for a whole. This is one of these games that needs drastic gameplay changes if it wants to become relevant again.

Since Mario Party: Top 100 is a "best of" compilation from all the previous entries, I see it as them kind of giving it a rest and maybe they will overhaul the mechanics for the next numbered entry on Switch.

just noticed that most of Japanese third party exclusive games for the switch are using unreal engine 4.Octopath Traveler,Travis Strikes Again,SMT HD,any reason behind them?

There are a few reasons.

1.) A lot of these companies don't have engines that work on the Switch, or are even in any way tuned to mobile hardware, so they either have to do a lot of work to port their existing technology, or move to something that supports it already.

2.) For companies that are already using Unreal Engine 4 (like Grasshopper), this was just a no brainer in general.

3.) I don't know if a lot of people noticed this, but around 3 or so years ago, Epic and NVIDIA entered into a major partnership around optimizing Unreal Engine 4 for the Tegra X1, as both Epic and NVIDIA really wanted a better presence on mobile. Given this was likely before Nintendo even decided to use the thing, Unreal Engine 4 is the engine that's spent the absolute most time being optimized for the Switch's hardware, making it a really great choice for the platform. You will notice that UE4 actually got up and running on Switch way faster than it did on PS4/XB1 in part due to this.

4.) The other major middleware option is Unity, which has various issues if you're a mid-sized team or larger and/or targeting higher end performance.

5.) One of the major things that was holding Unreal Engine 4 usage back was that it didn't work on PS3, Vita, or 3DS. Anything that's Switch exclusive doesn't have that issue.

6.) Moving to Unreal Engine 4 is generally just going to be a major performance and development efficiency upgrade for these studios that also allows them to target any other platforms in the future from mobile to console to PC, or even just making more Switch games, so using the engine sets them up well no matter what way they go in the future.

I suspect you'll see this trend continue as the PS3, Vita, and 3DS continue to die off.

the series needs drastic changes, but MP10 just sold (probably) above expectations just in 2015 though right
unless you only mean Star rush
Mario Party 10 came out at March 15. It topped 1m, for a Wii U game that's an acceptable result. Star Rush came out in October at on 3DS, never topped 1m and likely had a big drop from the previous 3DS Mario Party game. This one comes out at December 17 and isn't gonna light the charts either. It needs a big pause and a reboot if it wants to find again past glory.

Yeah, but yo didn't saw this rate of adoption for, UE3 and Vita/Ps3. The point you are missing is that developers are probably realizing that is better to target multiple platforms that are more complex at every generation and their in-house engines were just holding them back. Even the big developers like SE are now using western multipat engines.

MP10 topped 2 million.

And I'm not sure if handheld mario party is the best barometer for the franchise given the type of game, but MP DS did do well.

I agree the game needs a break/change, but I was pointing out that the 2nd most recent entry did well and was on a home console, so who knows what Nintendo thinks

While this is true, they were asking why the Switch exclusives were doing this in particular, which I assume they meant in part "Why Unreal instead of Unity?" on top of "Why Unreal instead of their own tech?"

I can kind of understand Monster Hunter world, but Okami HD not being released on the Switch is just wtf.

For me an even bigger wtf is MMC, you know that blue bomber guy that was added to Smash in a big/beautiful way... yeah I just... don't... get it, like at all.

DQIX LTD worldwide is 5.5M (shipment data)

5.5M worldwide might be hard for DQXI to top, unless the Switch version is a big hit. 1.5-2M in the west seems like a stretch.

DQXI will probably manage to top worldwide sales of VII and VIII though.

I should probably post this here too.

Fate managed to achieve two huge milestones this month.

1.) Fate/Grand Order was the #1 top grossing mobile game worldwide.

2.) In Japan specifically, the game dethroned Monster Strike to become the #1 grossing game for the month. Monster Strike had held that position since May 2015.

Worldwide:

Japan:

Lineage games are making a killing.

And I'm so impressed by PAD. We've been talking about GH needs to find another game to make up the decline of PAD for over a year (or maybe 2?). Yet it continues to be top 5 (most of the time top 3) in Japan every month.

Nintendo business meeting for holidays this morning.

Super Mario Odyssey was the highlight, new 2DS LL Pokemon LE gained attention too.

I actually think that SMT HD is a 2018 game,Nintendo just want it as a big 2018 game to show up at the Spring Direct. The Shin Megami Tensei concert will show another teaser and a full blown trailer will be shown up at the spring direct

I hope you're right :).

And yeah, you are at least right that we should look to the concert or TGS for something. I hope we get something there.

Well UE3 saw poor adoption in Japan because the documentation and support from Epic was apparently terrible for quite some time. UE4 is the opposite situation.

that's something that caught my attention on yesterday's direct.

why is nintendo so reluctant to create some mid/long-term buzz/hype? I am not talking FFVIIr, Shenmue 3, five-years-too-early kind of announcements. I mean basically 2018

why not let people know what's in store past the upcoming holiday season? just teasers, like Metroid Prime 4, if they don't wanna share that much.
The target of this direct was revealing holiday schedule as well as first months of 2018. March / April direct will cover the months later.

I can see where sinobi is coming from. Every Nintendo release was revealed from January event and yesterday Q1 2018 was added. Mario + Rabbids is in January and Kirby likely for Golden Week. That leaves a 3 months gap for new releases and the system has to rely on previous games to maintain momentum after holidays. Unlike west where 3rd parties will play big role almost all of them will be irrelevant in Japan. That could be the reason Rabbids is coming out so later.

yes- just as a comparison, super mario 3d world had 24 orders 11 days before release.

And that sold 1M copies by new year, so good enough!!

Edit: Not that I want to fall for the mistake of translating preorders into sales number, but I found the post where Splatoon 2 got 18 first week, so that's a good comparison.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
3D Land sold +2m somewhere between Mario 64 and 3DL is what I expect lifetime for MariO.

Minecraft did its job: get Japanese kids used to 3D environments and full camera control.

Mario 3D will benefit from that!

Xenoblade 2 is going to be the first big jrpg on Switch right?
It should be, but it won't be.

I don't see it selling more than 150k LTD.

Octopath will outsell it in 4 days.

Are there any predictions/speculations about Sen III's performance? I'm hoping it does well but it being PS4-only has me pretty nervous.

Yes but doesn't Nintendo usually have a late December early January Direct? It feels like we generally get one around that time that details games releasing at least until March/April.

Alrighty then, so let's review. We should have what is I believe EVERY HD Dragon Quest game on the Switch accounted for I think now, maybe aside from the newest Fortune Street with DQ and FF.

That's:

Dragon Quest Heroes 1 & 2
Dragon Quest X
Dragon Quest XI
Dragon Quest Builders
Dragon Quest Builders 2

That's 6 games (splitting Heroes up). Wowzers.

First party releases at least until March are set. If there was anything else important they would show it yesterday.

They've revealed games in November that came out the next February/March. Mostly the Zelda remasters. I'd expect something on that scale to accompany Kirby.

I think you're probably right, but I do think there is a chance for a biggish announcement at the Nintendo world championships next month

I hope XC2 does well. It's probably the best release it's had (not on the end of a console's life, not on a dead console, new release on a portable in japan).
Not sure if there's a ton of JRPG competition in december either so we'll see.
Nintendo's promotional material hasn't been very good, but we'll see
