Grand Theft Auto V is the best selling game of all time (In the US) - NPD

http://www.usgamer.net/amp/npd-grand-theft-auto-v-is-the-best-selling-game-of-all-time

Grand Theft Auto V is now the best selling game of all-time in terms of revenue and tracked unit sales. That's according to the NPD Group's August analysis for video game sales in 2017. Not only is that incredibly impressive, but it proves just how strong GTAV is almost four years after the game initially came out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

"Grand Theft Auto V has now been on the market 49 months and has achieved 41 Top 10 chart appearances, 16 more times than any other single title in reported history," wrote NPD's Mat Piscatella. "In addition, Grand Theft Auto V is the all-time best-selling game by both revenue and units in tracked sales across PC, console, and portable with digital and packaged combined."

The article headline is a bit misleading, NPD only tracks North American sales so AFAIK this report is only in regards to that region. It's also not clear if games like Minecraft are tracked accurately via NPD, but either way it's an extremely impressive accomplishment

Update: Clarification - This report only applies to the United States but NPD does track sales across all of the Americas

The report issued yesterday was for the US market.

NPD also tracks sales across all the Americas, not just North America.

Data in the reporting is full market physical combined with digital full game sales on PlayStation, Xbox and STEAM platforms for publishers in the digital leader panel, which include Activision Blizzard, Bandai Namco, Capcom, Deep Silver, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Sony, Square Enix, Take-Two Interactive, Ubisoft, Warner Bros. Interactive.

The performance on this thing has been utterly ridiculous for years and years now. We'll never see a behemoth like it again.

I'm wondering if the bulk of it's sales have been this gen? It did come out in the waning years of PS3 and 360 originally so the fact that a port to current gen a year later has sold this well and continues to do so to this day is staggering.

I really wonder if GTAVI can top it.

I wonder if they will split Online off or build it into 6 after this games insane milestones.

There was that scary rumor that the wild revenue success of GTA Online may have killed the single player GTA, but I have to imagine with their unlimited budget and complete creative control, Rockstar would still want to make one.

And to think that when it came out some people were convinced these kinds of sales numbers were a thing of the past and that mobile games would take over the mainstream market.

Congrats to Rockstar. The game is really good, but I'm still absolutely salty that they gave up on the single-player DLC :/

Yeah that one really hurt. Online is printing money and it pains me to say it but the gta4 level sp dlc might be done for good.

Grand Theft Auto V will be like Tetris was, where any system capable of playing it - from future phones to consoles the next 20 yrs - would be incomplete without it.

It is a great game with a lot of content, so well deserved.

To this day I'll still fire it up every once in a while and just mess around with no goal in mind. It's a blast.

That's an incredible achievement. You look at the biggest selling historic games, Tetris, Minecraft, Wii Sports, the original Super Mario Bros and they're all the sort of game that is played by a non-gamer. I know GTA is still a pretty casual title, but I don't think it really gets people buying it that don't usually play any other games.

I saw a couple outlets claiming this could be the last hurrah for big-budget games like this.

With those kind if sales , they aren't releasing GTA6 til like the end if the generation again, ain't they?

Got to take advantage of the the cross generational release with the next generation consoles to hit all the install bases like they did with GTA5.

I'd definitely consider it the best overall GTA game. IV was disappointing, and it's hard to go back to the PS2 games at this point.

Same. I would buy it on a Nintendo console but I'm sure hell will freeze over before a mainline GTA is on a Nintendo console.

I dunno. 2 weeks ago, I would've laughed at the idea of LA Noire, DOOM and Wolfenstein II: TNC coming to Switch. Yet, here we are. Basically, you just never know.

Absolutely deserved, a masterpiece and probably still the most impressive video game to me. I have poured sooo many hours into it, completed the sp like 3 or 4 times and still I notice new things sometimes, sometimes even things happen that never happened to me before. Last time I saw a cab driver run over someones dog, the owner pulled him out of the car and beat him up.

Heck just imagine how much more they would sell if they'd port that thing to the Switch!

Just imagine... GTAV on the go! They'd easily sell a few dozen million more!

You're not wrong, but GTA is valuable enough that I would think it more wise to manufacture their own platform rather than cede royalties to Nintendo. Switch needs GTA more than GTA needs Switch (though neither really need each other in the long run).

Bought it twice. Once on ps3 and beat it. Downloaded on xbox one reday to take advantage of more processing power, but wasn't ready for the large download so haven't been able to play it since the necessary updates.
