TCL P607 P Series ( the new mid range/budget 4k/HDR recommendation)

One thing I've noticed is that when HDR is on (I use HDR Dark), the default color space is "Auto". Shouldn't it be "Native"? Whenever DV is enabled (again, DV Dark), the default color space is actually "Native", which leads me to believe something is off.

Hmmm. I gotta check this out.

As has been stated on avs forums fald is f'f up right now. After the latest update there is no difference in the medium and high settings, it's on low on anything non hdr. Try it.

Destiny looks like a muddy mess on my set right now.

i noticed that too. there would be no difference in the screen between the low > med > high fald setting in terms of visible brightness. i didn't think anything of it at the time as i was playing knack and there isn't much in the way of blacks in that game.

i noticed it again in destiny 2 last night during load screens and actually did a hard restart of the TV and it seemed to fix the problem (temporarily). system > Power > system restart

we'll see if it sticks. i thought maybe my issue was related to how tcl released firmware and then pulled it.

What do you mean? So a Vizio M 65 inch wouldn't be as good (theoretically) as a 65 inch of this TCL?

Picture quality wouldn't be that much different. Input lag would be though.

Vizio P is a better TV than the TCL, but not worth it considering the price difference.

Use rtings.com to compare the TVs.

Alright, just bought one and set it up. I've got a PS4 Pro, XBO S (and X coming), and a PC close to it with a GTX 1080ti.

I'm a colorblind person ready to take advantage of HDR. I can't necessarily differentiate between color that well, but I can sure as fuck appreciate some contrast.

What steps should I take next to properly calibrate this beast?

edit: Also are there any good HDMI switches that can do HDR+4K? I'd like to have both my XBO and PS4 on the same input, ideally.

Hey all. Been looking hard at your recommendations of the TCL brand but one little concern. I am a big retro gamer but the TCLs only have HDMIs and one pair of AV Cables

Is there a decent HDR 4K model that still has components (GameCube/PSP etc) and even S video?

And if not, maybe some sort of converter box would do the trick?

Just so you're clear, it's not the TCL "brand" that's good - just this very specific set.

Don't think of TV "brands" being better than others. It's the individual models that make the difference. There are good Sony's and bad Sony's. Good LG's and bad LG's. Every model is different. You really have to dig deep into the specific set you're looking to by.

I gotcha. To be honest, I just want the most for my money. I still have to invest in a PS4 pro and with this TCL, it's the same cost for both system and TV, then to go with a Sony or Samsung

The Sony TV that is bonafide better than this TV is the X900E series. You will be paying over $1000 for that one. If you can get that one, then great.

Otherwise this TCL is the best for buck and it isn't even close.

I'm tempted to pick this up but I really wanted the 65". I have the 49" ks8000 right now and love it but I want a bigger tv. Can't decide if the 55" will satisfy my craving or if I should wait for Black Friday to get a good deal on a Sony or Samsung 65". Obviously that'll cost almost a grand more even on sale. I saw this tv at Best Buy recently and it seems like a noticeable size increase over my 49" and picture looked great in store (so can probably look way better with tweaking).

Hmmm....

This is a dilemma. I am not inclined to say that you should get upgrade from 49" to 55" especially if you're TV is the wonderful KS8000. If there was a 65" of the TCL it would be an easier recommendation, but there isn't and your options become limited.

Honestly if you want a 65" that is comparable in image quality to the KS8000 you want to go with either the Vizio P65-E1 (~$1700) or the Sony 65X900E (~$2000, but it goes on sale for less). The Vizio M-series may not be a bad choice either if you want lesser (but certainly not bad) image quality.

However, I would very very strongly recommend waiting until black friday and see what sales you can get on those TVs, as they're not really on sale anywhere right now.

That's kind of where I'm at right now. Wait and see if I can get a x900e for $1500 around Black Friday.

The picture quality on the ks8000 is so good so I am still happy with it. Just once I decided I wanted something bigger I can't shake the craving.

The X930E is even better, but the 65" of that costs around $2700!

Yeah. Even on sale the 930 is probably gonna be out of my range. Swung by BB a couple hours ago to grab a game and strolled down the TV section and looked at both the TCL and the 65" x900e. I think they TCL would be a noticeable size increase and I'd be happy (especially for the price) but I sit about 8.5' away and the 65" would be an amazing viewing experience.

Does anyone know if its possible to stream music/control music from a Mac PC to the roku player on the tv? Basically I just want to play music through my sound setup in the other room without leaving my laptop while I'm working.

edit: even just controlling spotify from my laptop would be sufficient.

New Firmware 7.7.0 4154

Grab it before they pull it. Or don't. Maybe you wanna let others be ginea pigs first (like the last two times where they released and then pulled it lol)

hopefully this fixes the sharpness issue and my issue with fald not working all the time.

Wish they would release some sort of patch notes.

which FALD issue?

It happened with the last update, check avs forum. A lot of members there and in gaf are experiencing an issue where fald will only work on low mode in non hdr, medium and high are no longer working.

It sucks because destiny looks so f ing washed out.

oh shit not an issue yet for me luckily.

i thought that was the case a few weeks ago I noticed in games for a while that maybe it didn't change but it is really hard to see the difference in most games.

i found that going into a game with a good dark scene showed the difference, it's minor but still noticeable.
i use movie or low power for non hdr games though

I tried to use Shadow Warrior 2 on PC to gauge a comparison between SDR and HDR, but to be honest, I don't know if it's working correctly.

There are some differences, mainly light sources are much more blown out on SDR than HDR, but it seems like SDR can get much more bright. Switching to HDR also dims the main menu of the game, so I don't know if that's indicating it's not working correctly or not, or if the implementation is just shite.

I need a different PC game to test.

Haven't noticed any FALD issues, but there have been issues with ARC all of the sudden. I had to completely reset my receiver and that fixed it, but it's back again and it's frustrating. I prefer to use the app in the TV for Netflix and HBO, but now I have to use Xbox One for those.

Sharpness bug still there too along with the fald one.

Turned on my PS4 and launched Netflix. Immediately saw the flash lighting in the corners despite fald being on high. Toggling on and off seemed to fix it. Netflix auto switches to hdr mode so I don’t think these bugs are specific to a video mode.

Also Immediately noticed the edge enhancement on the Text and images in Netflix. Flipping sharpness from 0 to 1 eliminated things.

Is there a reason why PS4 Netflix is preferred over the built in Roku app?

I must have missed that in this thread

Ok, so I am thinking of getting a new TV in the next few months.

Right now I am leaning towards the LG OLED B7A 55", but I have a few questions:

  1. Is the difference in price/size worth it on OLED sets vs a 1k HDR tv?
  2. When do new TV usually get announced, 2018 models? Someone told me in October. Would this mean 2017 sets go down in price?

I've been getting an issue for the last few weeks where FALD is turned off by default whenever I turn the TV off and back on, even though the settings display it as enabled. Swiping through the picture modes usually helped me get it back on.

Currently running 7.7.0.

It’s not. In fact I avoid it if I can. The PS4 app after the most recent update puts the tv in hdr mode even when the content you are watching doesn’t actually do hdr. PS4 app also has those fucking annoying preview clips that constantly play audio even when you’re just browsing the catalog or put the remote down for a seconds.

I just used it as a quick way to test local dimming since I was gonna play a game and there are screens in the app where a large portion of the screen is black. Fald doesn’t work on the roku app until you start streaming.

Ok checked a non hdr source, switched through picture modes , still only the lowest setting works.

As for hdr, I launched YouTube, went to the hdr channel. Launched their newest video which is pretty bad ass, and same thing, only the lowest setting is working in hdr.
