Shadow of the Colossus (PS4) new trailer from TGS

Can't believe I forgot this was a thing, especially when this is my favorite Sony game. Luckily, for me, I'll be kept busy for the rest of this year and most of next year so the wait won't feel too painful

Im not sure if this is a joke or you guys really think this is an issue
I like the style of the new pillars. really draws in from the rest of the architecture of the original title in places like the caves or the salamander pit. The chunk missing *shrug*

Yep if that's the best sales pitch the game's gonna get then I am 100% out at launch. The alterations in art style aren't doing much for me positively or negatively, the PS4 version still looks amazing but I still have not seen a single compelling reason to pick this up. What's the price, surely not a penny over £30?

"Ueda is offering suggestions", "It's impossible to satisfy everyone" and "at least the original will always be there!" are really not things I was hoping to see in a thread about the big updated rerelease of one of the most critically acclaimed games in history. Bleh.

What exactly were you expecting? It's a remake with the option to use an updated control scheme.

The scene with the 13th colossus is concerning, lighting-wise, but everything else looks REMARKABLY true to the art direction of the original game considering it's an entirely new team. Even the blur filter that was in the PS2 version but not PS3 or PCSX2 version is there. If that scene with the 13th colossus is the only major aesthetic change, I will be very happy with this.

Look:

The way scale is portrayed seems to be on point. Main complaint is that the skybox and lighting could be more true to the original, but it still kinda looks like the same art style, if that makes sense.

Wander's character model is aesthetically much more similar to how he should look, from the back angle at least.

Notice how the mountains in the distance are saturated in bright sunlight, as they should be. Haze as well. Even the air in the room feels as it should. This is the most promising screenshot so far!

We know there were Colossi cut from the original, how about we start from there? What would be impossible about adding 1 or 2 new ones, even as optional post game content so the story stays the same? How about add in a 'Play as the Colossus' mode? A mode where you can fight the Colossi in any order if you've already played the game multiple times and want it changed a bit? Online Co-op mode? A battle royale mode where 16 naked Colossi parachute in and only one survives?

The game is already a masterpiece so of course all they needed to do was what they have done and you could argue that my suggestions are rubbish and maybe one of them was a very funny joke and that's fine and that's why I'm just a uni student but they're game developers making a remake of this fantastic game, why not add a few optional modes and go a bit crazy?

Are people serious about being bothered by extra geometry details or am I missing a joke?

The missing chunk from that pillar in the original game gave the world a more lived-in feeling. That level of detail added to the immersion. Now everything looks so clean and pristine which is just so typical for modern video game remakes. Remove all the charm of the original game for a quick cash grab.

I probably need a /s on that

Because money is finite and those suggestions won't sell the game to the people who will buy it.

I don't understand the nitpicking, this looks fantastic. The gloomy and lonely atmosphere seems intact to me - it's not like they swapped in blue skies and rolling green fields here. It can evoke the same feelings without being visually identical.

Given that Bluepoint is at the helm, I'm very trusting that this will be a worthy remake. All I want is what this appears to be - a competent remake that modernizes the visuals and controls of the game. Nothing else needs to be touched.

...you do realize that was literally because the game was on PS2, right?

Nothing about that screen shot looks "prestine". That said, since it seems some folks legit are serious about that...I'm out on this thread. 😂 This isn't the place for me.

And because the director of the game himself says the extra colossi were cut for a reason and putting them back in goes against the vision of the final game.

Give it a rest peeps, it's not happening and it shouldn't happen to begin with.

They would sell it to me at least. Again those are just a few off of the top of my head, surely Ueda has thought of at least a few ways the game could be significantly expanded in the last decade, some really good ideas that only he can think of?

And again "money is finite", another prime quote there about a Shadow of the Colossus remake on the PS4.

I've been hankering for a sequel for a while and maybe my expectations are just too lofty for what might just be a way to attract new players to the game- albeit a combined 230+ million people have owned a console to play the other versions so even that doesn't hold much water- and maybe a sequel is still possible who knows?

This still seems like an unexciting thing either way.

lol

Yeah the microscope people are looking at this through is pretty crazy. We're talking about 4 worn down and broken pillars standing in the middle of a desert. "Pristine" isn't exactly the word that springs to mind here.....

If people are still going on about, then it's a problem. Known in the industry as "audience feedback". One of the most important aspects of creating something.
I understand that at the same time it's a remake by a different developer using new tools etc. There is going to some differences as devs would want to add their influence(style?) to the game as they should be able to with a remake.

I can bet if the original team were doing this remake some of the changes made would be similar because assets are being redone.

I would say the Sad! in my comment was done a bit as a joke 😜 but I do my acknowledge my comment doesn't take into account feedback and different in opinion.

Hope the game supports HDR because the sky box definitely contains a ton of highlight that came off as clipped in the PS2 and PS3 remake.

Loving the more natural aesthetic.

Me too. TLG with HDR was night and day.

Some thoughts.

  • AF is pretty bad. The textures on the bridge literally 20 feet away pretty much disappear.
  • The game has this subtle but beautiful CGi look to it. Similar to The Order.
  • The textures on the Colossi could be better. Dont look next gen to me.
  • Overall Texture work isnt on par with Naughty Dog and GG games.
  • The stonework especially looks fairly last gen. On par with the last guardian but behind The Lost Legacy and Uncharted.
  • They have improved the fur which looks current gen but again the stone work on the Colossi is still kinda last gen.
  • Smoke effects are last gen.
  • Lighting is incredible. Beautiful sky boxes. First shot is incredible and the stone textures there are remarkable so maybe its a AF thing. We'll see.

Kinda wish they would spend a lot of time on this and just add in the cut colossi even if it was a post game challenge mode or something.

Soo, the difference here is that the PS3 HD version had really bad draw distance or is this something new?

EDIT:

For my liking they've changed how the original game looked too much. SotC seemed to be set in an unidentifiable time of day, not dawn, not dusk, not midday, just some weird otherworldly place. They've tossed this out of the window for some reason. I absolutely do not like anything about how the bridge intro looks like now.

The camera angle is different in the remaster. You can see the big hole to the left in your blue circle.

Or maybe they've changed the world. Or fuck knows.

Whew boy... I knew this was going to be contentious when more footage was revealed.

BP have been tasked with essentially reworking a masterpiece. It's like asking someone to remake van Gogh's Starry Night in higher resolution with more detail. To viewers of that painting, there was never a need for that as we have already filled all the gaps in our minds.

Now every detail that is added will be endlessly scrutinized as not fitting how the viewer of the original remembers it, even if that memory was made up out of whole cloth.

I'm a huge fan and I'm really excited for this, but I think SOTC was a game that benefited from the 'murkiness' of SD. Kinda like Resident Evil 4, I just think a lot of the appeal is lost in super crisp resolution and that.

Yes, I'm in the same camp. Ueda's works are so dreamlike to begin with. Super sharp images are at odds with the whole vibe of his creations imo.

It certainly doesn't look bad, I'm not saying that - just at odds with the feel of the game, for me. I'll likely play it (as SOTC is one of my all-time favorites), but some things are better left untouched. I think a remake of the original Silent Hill would suffer a similar outcome from my perspective.
