If Bioshock was made in 1988

This guy does really cool demake videos PS1 style, here's an interview he did with Kotaku
http://www.kotaku.co.uk/2017/09/12/what-modern-games-would-look-like-on-playstation-one

and some other games demade
Rocket League

Assassin's Creed

Approximated/faked "demakes" are typically very aloof over the period and systems seek to emulate, but this was much better than I expected. Pretty much all that's missing is the PS1 dither effect and more pronounced warping.

These look great and not trying to be negative but i don't think these games would have looked quite like this in 98. Im not sure whats off, maybe resolution, or the texture quality but something is slightly too good to be in the same league as 98.

It may even be that it's just the general design, it takes what we now know and uses that rather than what we was doing back in 98. Just subtle things like clarity of colours or how things are arranged. Like even though its low polygon it still looks too good compared to what we had before. It's a subtle thing but it's something i noticed, but still great work all the same.

I'd love to see some proper demakes of games or even an old game from 98 remade to the same 98 standards using everything we know today to see how it'd be different based on knowledge.

You're probably thinking about bit depth and palettized textures.

you mean system shock?

System Shock 2 would be the closest to release to 1998, but it was never ported to the PS1. SS2 was planned for the Dreamcast, but never released on that console.

It is a neat to see these get demade, but the polygons look way to solid to be a PS1 game. Where's the juddering and texture warping?

That was cool, I want more of these.

In today's edition of Holy Shit, Where Has The Time Gone - Bioshock was released closer to 1998 than 2017.

Here's what Portal would have looked like in 1998 running on a PC: https://youtu.be/l4jgh3VdNm4?t=228

This is a video of a really early build of Prey 1 from 1998, the original game featured a portal mine that would have worked like the portal gun from Portal. Prey in the video is running on a Pentium II at 266MHz with a Voodoo 2.

For 98 that's real nice. But I bet the shoddy off-screen tape footage is obfuscating a lot of stuff making it look less primitive fidelity-wise than it really is.

Keep in mind that the Bioshock demake is aiming for PS1 hardware as well, and I don't need to tell you what the gap between a PS1 and a 1998 up-to-date gaming PC was.

Oh yeah, of course the gap between a PS1 and PC from that era was pretty big. But I only brought that one up because it would have been the closest equivalent to a Portal game in 1998. Shame there are no direct screencaps of that build of Prey online, the only images were ones that came from Magazines, and blurry washed out 1998 era encoded video.

I believe that fake 90's design is still a little too clean and modern, it looks more like those 90's nostalgia games.

The Assassin's Creed one is great though, reminds me of Time Commando.

There's a Dark Souls one too, which is kinda neat but model animation is janky even by 1998 standards-wait that would have been a 1998 FromSoftware game, nevermind.

The videos are pretty nice and I love this kind of stuff so I can't really rant on it too much, but they do often look like some of the less technically or artistically polished PS1 games of that time period. Games like Forsaken, G-Police or Jet Moto were released around that time, which arguably look a lot more visually consistent and polished. The examples are more similar to something like King's Field II, which is a game from '96 but is hardly a looker, and is much closer to what the demakes look like (by comparison, games like Tomb Raider, Krazy Ivan, Alien Trilogy and Destruction Derby 2 were released the same year).

Dark Souls one was fucking amazing - those shitty fixed camera angles. Perfect.

Just wish it had a big, cluttered UI.

I doubt that if Bioshock came out on 98 it would have a PS1 port, not even an N64 one. Possibly Dreamcast port two years later, but not PS1. Bioshock didn't even release on Ps3 until a year later. Without the Xbox in between you wouldn't be seeing many PC FPS in consoles

Kinda reminds me of Alien Resurrection on the PSX. I think 1998 is too generous though, this looks like a game that would be made in 2000.

Both Alien Resurrection and Medal of Honor Underground looked pretty good on ps1. And they supported real dual analog!

That's absolutely incredible.

Anyone know how this is accomplished technically? Was this rendered in something like UE4 with assets imported from Bioshock, for example?
