FAQ

Does multiplayer still work?

A: Yup! Much like Red, Blue & Yellow's Virtual Console release, it's all done over the 2/3DS' wireless connection. You can even connect to a Virtual Console copy of Red, Blue or Yellow once you reach the Time Capsule in Ecruteak City!

Is it worth playing this if I already played HeartGold/SoulSilver?

A: Absolutely! Aside from historical significance, the original Gold & Silver feature a different approach to world-building and plays very differently than its remake. Multiplayer battles and competitive battling in particular is far more focused on stalling than the speedy, hyper offensive teams found in later generations.

What about Crystal?

A: It's not available...yet. Recent revelations suggest that a Virtual Console version of Crystal exists but may have been held back due to featured in that game needing to be altered much like Pokemon Yellow's surfing minigame (although that game released alongside Red & Blue/Green so it's unclear as to why there's been a delay, assuming it comes out at all).

Who is the best starter?

A: They're all good choices in Gold & Silver...but Totodile is the best one.

Also there's a glitch that lets you get all the starters in a single run anyway...

This OT is an absolute travesty. Cyndaquil is clearly the best! For shame OP.

Great job on the thread!

FOR SHAME!

Also Pokémon Gold is best.

Damn, I still have to wait a few hours till the postman brings the games.

Don't forget that you get a special Gold it Silver home menu theme if you buy the game, while a third theme is available on My Nintendo (100 PP).

I always go Gold so for this run I went Silver. Going to pick Totodile to mix it up as I always pick Cyndaquil.

except if you bought the boxed code version. Then you only get the celebi code for Sun/Moon.
And finally they send the code to your mail!!

Been working to make sure I had everything Gen 2 on the site in order over the past month. My older sections have not exactly been top quality before I'm forced to redo them haha

Moved over to Switch so won't be picking this up, but adore these games. People can tell me Gen 2 nostalgia is wrong for whatever reason, but these will forever be the pinnacle of the Pokémon series for me (alongside their superior remakes). No game released since has come close.

haven't played og gold/silver in over a decade, but had a ton of fun with red (way more than i expected) so i'm grabbing gold

does anyone know if the time capsule can connect with the copy of rby currently on your 3ds, or does it require two 3dses?

One thing I always adored about Gold/Silver/Crystal is the nighttime colour palette and how the windows lit up giving the game a very warm and inviting feeling.

I was like super dissapointed as a kid when Ruby & Sapphire came out and there was no more visible nighttime.

The Japanese anime theme for the Gold/Silver arc is pretty great too. Random hardcore guitar, do like.
There's an instrumental version of this that even the dub would use all the time during battles (notably Ash vs. Gary in the Silver Conference).

Speaking of the US theme though, the 3rd Movie remix was clearly superior.

Anyway, really stoked, already have Silver pre-loaded. I managed to fill the Pokedex in Yellow so that's my goal this time too, salty as I am about no easy way to get Celebi.

I love Gold, it's the game that gave me my user name "Hiro"
because after playing yellow which clearly starred Ash it never occurred to me to name the new trainer after myself so I went with the best sounding default name.

Silver is the best clearly.

Man... Gen 2 might be my favorite now that I think about it. I love John's atmosphere so much. The music is spectacular also.

Still gives me goosebumps. Didn't feel quite the same in the remakes. Something about the specific palette used in GSC made it special.

I mean, how can you say no to that face?

By remembering you're resigning yourself to a ton of bullshit to get past the first gym and that the damn thing doesn't do you any favors for several gyms after that. I remember being mind-blown as a kid that it learns razor leaf so early though, compared to the bulbasaur family.

This is gunna be huge for my living dex. Filled almost all of the dexs in yellow/sun/black/Y/alpha saphire. I need to get ahold of diamond and trade up to black to get those in after this.

Chikorita has almost no positive matchups in major fights in the first half of the game. Doesn't have too many in the Kanto portion either.

Conversely to Totodile it is probably the worst in-game starter in history.

It's okay because the entire second half of Johto you are still encountering trainers with pokemon leveled in the late 20s.

What’s this about “revelations” in regards to Crystal?
I'm not exactly sure, but people found some data in the eShop suggesting there is a placeholder for Crystal. It would be awful if they release GS and then Crystal though since I would certainly pick up Crystal instead.

It's a little hard to get excited since GS is ironically the worst versions when compared to Crystal and HGSS. Thinking about my team though:

Meganium (never picked Chikorita in any of my playthroughs)
Crobat (never used in main game)
Red Gyarados (always boxed him)
Umbreon/Espeon (whichever comes first)

Skarmory comes so late, and I always use Ampharos so...

I recall blazing through much of Johto with just Typhlosion in Silver. I'll recreate that, but probably add Ampharos, some other one, and then an HM slave to boot.

Both of these. Gen 2 was always my favorite, and a big part of that was always the atmosphere. The music, the color palettes (nighttime was soooo good), the look of the towns. All awesome.

I was always disappointed by the nighttime color palettes in later games. Not dark enough.

Bayleef gets poisonpowder early which helps greatly in the most important early game fight (Miltank). Considering there isn't much else threatening until the 8th gym, that makes up for it's poor performance in the first 2 gyms IMO.

Meganium's real problem is how hard it falls off in the late game, especially without access to Toxic until Kanto. In fights that actually matter like Clair, Karen, and Lance it's pretty useless outside of paralyzing things with Body Slam and occasionally stalling/tanking with synthesis.

Crobat doesn't learn Sludge Bomb in Gen 2. Just a heads up.

I feel like it has poor performance in most gyms after, though. The only matchups I can think of that Bayleef/Meganium does ok are vs Whitney's Miltank, Chuck's Poliwrath and Clair's Kingdra and that's on the basis of being very tanky and poisoning them to death (and Razor Leaf vs Poli).

So, according to the weekly eShop press release, there is a Gold/Silver 3DS theme supposed to be available as MyNintendo reward (in Europe a least). I can't find it, though. Is the update not live, yet or is the site not working properly for me?

Yeah man after Pokemon Yellow playing Crystal was a legit upgrade, probably the biggest the series has seen. Details like the xp bar were really cool. Loved also the remakes, dont know if I can play the original now.
