PUBG dev Bluehole concerned over Fortnite's Battle Royale [Up: Background Both Sides]

Havent played pubg myself, but from reading the concept and impression from easy allies and various other video. It sound really cool.

If Konami/some other dev manage to make battle royal game with mgs v kind gameplay. I'd be all over it.

Is this Bluehole's heel turn?

What did they expect? This happens all the time. Someone has a good idea, others try to imitate and maybe build on it.

I do feel that Epic using the PUGB name without permission probably isn't the best thing to do but everything else just seems like someone scared something better might come along.

You guys realize the reason they're concerned is because Epic owns the Unreal Engine and is a partner with Bluehole right? It's not just some random team copying.

He added, "We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don't feel that it's right."

Oh noes, someone is mentioning our game!

Look, usually game companies don't mention the competitor's names because they want to avoid comparisons, or feel it's unneeded, or have another marketing strategy. Not because it's illegal or anything like that.

But it's perfectly ok to actually do it. If a game dev want to be honest and say "our game is kind of like Civilization, but with tactical battles and with more differentiated nations" is his marketing decision. Could be good, could be bad.

For a game that rather shamelessly ripped a lot off from King of the Kill (which itself was not necessarily original) - it's seems insane that PUBG's team would think legal action is the right step here.

Just gonna give my thoughts like I did in the other thread.

They should have known this was coming. There are going to be MANY clones and straight up ripoffs. Especially on STEAM.

But them getting upset that they were referenced and contemplating action? I don't know. That's a bit overboard imo.

If roles were reversed. Everyone would rightfully be up in arms if Epic came out and said this shit.
Using another games name that you helped work on for your own success is overboard. Epic is too good of a company to be this creatively broke

Ah yes because Bluehole invented the concept of Battle Royale

I mean, they didn't, but as things stand right now Fortnite's Battle Royale mode is almost exactly PUBG in the Fortnite engine. UI and color choices, exact same structure etc. I don't think Bluehole has a legal case, but I hope for more from the Battlegrounds clones we're going to get

Why though? Should Nintendo and Konami be upset at the huge number of games that market themselves as "Metroidvanias"?

I don't think that's an unreasonable statement from Bluehole, honestly. I thought it was a little weird how directly epic was referencing PUBG by name, too.

As soon as a console game hits that mimics (and is as good as or better than) this before PUBG does, it'll be too late for them. They have to realize that it's only a matter of time lol.

Can't say I don't feel bad for them though, they brought something unique to a stale genre (IMO) and it's a huge hit, of course they'd want to keep it for their own.

They should get used to see other Battle Royale modes by developers and publishers with a lot more resources and infrastructure behind them very quickly.

This was always going to happen and I highly doubt this came as a surprise for them. There's no way of stopping other devs from running with your idea and trying to do it better. They should just be happy with their current success and try to stay ahead of the competition by investing their profits in improving the PUBG and rolling out to consoles (not just Xbox One) ASAP.

Are they serious? I mean, they have to be joking right? Every fps game mode ever devised has been copied, why do these guys have a problem?

For everyone showing up to complain that PUBG is, itself, a ripoff, remember that the original battle royale mod was created by Brendan Greene the principal mind behind PUBG.

Shit I remember reading plenty of times games trying to associate themselves with the Souls craze.

It sounds to me like bluehole is concerned because they have an active exchange with epic going on, using their engine.

Fortnite is also pretty shameless about being a copy. Copying game mechanics is nothing new, but here it feels like they took just every element straight from pubg. Like they could have done something different with the intro instead of just replacing the plane with a flying bus.

Get over it, people will copy your game, and hey will reference it directly just like devs have in the past with every other genre. Hell publishers use to literally do commercials smack talking each other's games of the same genre. EVERYONE was after Marios ass back in the day before they realized you can't beat the king.

But honestly be worried, because wants the AAA devs make their clone, you may very well have to be worried. Can't imagine how well an Ubisoft clone would do.

Your game is good, focus on fixing its issue and making it a better game. Everyone else is just around the corner with AAA polish to back them up.

Bluehole should stfu. I mean, didn't they make an MMORPG that, despite having an actiony twist, is built on the foundation of those that came before it? Like WOW?

That's how gaming works. Maybe focus on making your game not be a laggy, janky, terribly optimized mess so you can compete with better developers as they bring more and more of their own battle royale games. And I hope Fortnite enjoys massive success on PS4 where players have no alternative

The exact same sentiment would have happened otherwise: "They copied all of this and don't even mention PUBG".

These people are drunk with success. A bit of a shame.

How does the insinuation of copying from inside info work out considering the earlier games H1Z1 etc?

So they’re acting as if they invented the online FPS?

Their product may be popular, but it’s as derivative as the next and the one after that.
