And this was only seasons 10-20.
South Park goes over the top all the time, and yet this trailer is what triggers everyone?!

If you’re in this thread, chances are you have at least a passing interest in South Park, and have probably giggled at at least one of the above storylines. So which is it? Have you always hated their humour and are just now admitting to yourself and others that you’ve wasted 20 years watching something you despise? Are you bandwagoning on the hate fest just cuz? Or can you admit that while yes, the racist imagery is admittedly probably too far for most people, but it is also nothing new in terms of how South Park handles any racial matter?

Does it make it right? No, of course not, but as I said in my last long post: South Park is never seen as a serious entity, their portrayal of anything they ever make fun of (this Kanye stuff included) is not likely backed by malicious intent.

I really enjoy Drawn Together but even that show has moments where i get disgusted with it.

They even made fun of South Park for doing very similar humor yet with different execution.

South Park goes over the top all the time, and yet this trailer is what triggers everyone?!

If you're in this thread, chances are you have at least a passing interest in South Park, and have probably giggled at at least one of the above storylines. So which is it? Have you always hated their humour and are just now admitting to yourself and others that you've wasted 20 years watching something you despise? Are you bandwagoning on the hate fest just cuz? Or can you admit that while yes, the racist imagery is admittedly probably too far for most people, but it is also nothing new in terms of how South Park handles any racial matter?

Does it make it right? No, of course not, but as I said in my last long post: South Park is never seen as a serious entity, their portrayal of anything they ever make fun of (this Kanye stuff included) is not likely backed by malicious intent.

No one notices the people who are concerned about the stuff listed because they're always shouted down w/ arguments like yours, or boring "IT'S SATIRE" arguments.

The problem with South Park is that people continue to use what it does to mock people in real life BECAUSE of these bullshit justifications. "It's not serious!", Yet folk continue to mock people with the ways seen in the show. That's how bullshit edgelord stuff like this goes.

EDIT: great job that, in your list of things south park has mocked, you consider people of colour, LGBT folk, mental health and handicapped people to be on fair grounds with Redskins fans and fucking beastiality.

You seem to have disconnect here. One can find it funny, understand why it is offensive and have empathy. I found it hilarious because it was so over the top. I know exactly why it can be offensive to some people. I also understand being offended so I can empathize with those who are.

That being said, we do not know the whole set up for this yet. There may be more to it that has a valid reason. Let's wait and see. If there isn't then valid criticism should be raised.

I liken this to WoW a bit. Data miners post all info of a new patch on the PTR or expansion alpha/beta build and people go fucking nuts over changes or additions before they know the whole story.

With this trailer, it looks bad on the surface. Let's just see how it pans out.

I think it more making fun of the game. It just happens to be about his mom. Imdirectly it does, but the point if the joke is more about funning Kanye and his game. At leat that is how I see it.

Set up or not, they dropped this. Whether it was because shock value would sell more games and then they’d play it and it’d make more sense..doesn’t matter, because they ultimately did decide to degrade a dead women’s worth and mock her blackness..as she’s currently deceased.

This was classless, bigger point or not. This is unacceptable.

I agree with it not having malicious intent. I also find just about everything in the trailer to be pretty funny. But the fish in blackface is pretty bad. The fish should be changed to something a bit less racist looking.

How are they going to make portraying his mother as a racist caricature a joke. Unless your saying minstrel shows are a good time?
Again, I am not them nor smart enough to come up with a scenario. We have to wait and see. If there is nothing then you guys can bring the pitchforks and torches to Colorado. I still think it is too early to know.

Set up or not, they dropped this. Whether it was because shock value would sell more games and then they’d play it and it’d make more sense..doesn’t matter, because they ultimately did decide to degrade a dead women’s worth and mock her blackness..as she’s currently deceased.

Again, if we only have half the story. There could be a completely valid reason and justification for this if there is more to it. If there isn't then let the criticism flow. I would rather see the scene in question in full before jumping to conclusions.

The tacky jokes, albeit dated, I can understand. The black face shit is just straight up trash comedy, and absolutely no one should be defending such a racist taboo. Expected better from these guys, tbh.

As a massive South Park fan even I found the fish very questionable. I didn't know the context of the joke, but that didn't make it any better. Looked very minstrel-esque, now wether that was intended or not I don't know but this must have passed a lot of eyes before being released.

I think you may have been missing the point I was trying to make— they’ve been making fun of many groups for years using similar and just as extreme means, my question is why is this particular group, and this particular approach all of a sudden the last straw? There has been outrage at the show over the years for a lot of what I posted above, and it keeps trucking along, protected under whatever free speech laws there are in the US.

I didn’t notice the fish at first, and I’m sure it’ll go over a lot of people’s heads too, that doesn’t make it right at all, no. I liken it to an adult joke in a kids movie, those who recognize it will be taken aback by it, and those who don’t will probably giggle for some unrelated reason and move on.

That said, I do know enough about the characterizations from the 40-50s and how they treated people of color, and it does go a little far in that respect I’ll give you that.

Whether they should remove it or not though, is on them to really decide what’s more important: a racially charged joke, or whatever commentary they were trying to make.

Really love people still posting things from the show and the precious game and going "SO YOU WERE OK WITH THAT BUT THIS IS TOO MUCH? PREPOSTEROUS!"

Fun fact: I also hate those; a lot of those jokes are also terrible and it's bad that they thought those were ok!

Turns out we're not also talking about them because they're just not in the fucking trailer for the video game that we're discussing. It's not like this is where they finally crossed the line or something.

It keeps "trucking along" because dipshits keep finding it funny.

Also, "whatever commentary they were trying to make" is that making a tribute to your dead mother is apparently worth making fun of? And "an adult joke in a kids movie"? This isn't fucking Wakko Warner in animaniacs saying "Fingerprints!" While Dot literally holds Prince.

These are the same cowardly writers who won't dare joke about trump anymore.

EDIT: Also, no one is saying "THIS IS THE FINAL STRAW" with regards to south park: People are reacting to a trailer released for a VIDEO GAME on a VIDEO GAME FORUM.

For a dude who works for a videogame company himself, you'd think you'd realize context clues like that, lmao.

But a lot of people are. This thread is just going round in circles and there's never going to be a resolution. It's pretty much South Park through and through - some hate it, others don't.

I think it's pretty much the colors. If you look at the Kanye fish, it's the same fish but green. The eyes are the same and the lips are the same.

South Park goes over the top all the time, and yet this trailer is what triggers everyone?!

The dumbest, shittiest strawman argument so far in this thread is that everyone was always okay with the humor of South Park up until now. Not one post was made in this thread about how the in-show appearance of Chef's parents were also a problematic depiction of black people. Nope, impossible. Everyone who is against the mammy fish depiction is a hypocrite. It's not possible that folks thought they took it too far in the past, or changed their minds at the show earlier than this trailer for their new game.

I really, really love the minimizing lens placed on blackface too. October should be fun with you people.

And now you can add depicting Donda West as a minstrel'd mammy to the list. It's a very specific and racist as hell depiction of a person who didn't seek media attention ever. They may have wanted to insult Kanye's tribute game but in the process they're punching down on a deceased mom.

But hey, they made fun of beastiality in the past so I guess it's all fair?

The people that drop in with one-liners to say that they have no problem with seeing her depicted in a racist way are more intellectually honest.

Edit: case in point 👇🏾

How funny.

They brought back the super dated homophobic Kanye joke from 10+ years ago. Mixed it with a semen joke and then used it to make fun of Kanye's dead mom.

I think the older you get the more eye-rolling the "edgyness" of South Park becomes.

funnier now to me

Ok. I’ll concede to this. I had no idea about his mother or her lack of wanting any kind of attention or that she was even dead.

I don’t follow celebrity pop culture all that much, so please forgive my ignorance to the circumstances surrounding her inclusion here.

Since "South Park makes jokes about EVERYTHING!" comes up a lot:

What's the actual joke concerning the mammy fish? What about the trailer works and is funny that would not have been funny if the fish were not a stereotype?

The City Wok owner exists as a parody of the old Hollywood stereotype, and lets them repeatedly pull City/Shitty jokes. The character exists the way they are in service of comedy, and over time they actually delve into the character and evolve it beyond the one-note joke. Whether it works or not is arguable, but it's been clear from day 1 why they went with the character.

Big Gay Al's entire point, as a character, is being a flamboyant stereotype and basically conveying that there's nothing wrong with being homosexual. But having the character be the most out-there stereotype possible is key to the overall point.

Kanye's mom is designed in the style of a minstrel show because _____ ? There's nothing in the trailer that indicates this is poking fun at anything, or in the service of a larger joke. They don't do anything with it, which means once you see the resemblance there's no "oh they're doing this because ______", it's just "oh hey mammy stereotype. Neat."

And that's the difference for me; crossing the line in service of a joke is a thing that can be taken on its own merits, but here there's no joke. South Park occasionally pulls stuff I feel they didn't really "earn", but here there's no attempt to earn it or contextualize it. It's lazy.

Well, looks like the trailer got everyone talking about the game, so I guess it did its job. Love it or hate it, this game now has a huge amount of mindshare, which is pretty important, considering how many times its been delayed.

The idea of Kanye's tribute game to his Mom being Flappy Bird is pretty hilarious.
Yeah I did too. I personally have no problem with the joke about Kanyes tribute (I appreciate some dark humor). It's just the depiction of his mother that I find pretty gross (though at the beginning of this thread I didn't quite understand what the issue was).

This is exactly the problem as to why the depiction of the fish is just offensive as oppose to being funny. It adds nothing to the joke at all which is what makes it stand out as being completely offensive. Everything about the joke would have landed just the same if it was a more generic looking fish

I'm fine with the joke being about Kanye. I'm fine with them taking jabs at his deceased mother given that the context of the joke revolves around a game that Kanye dedicated to her but the mammy fish literally adds nothing.

Girts and Korey over at Double Toasted gave their input and it's crazy that they talk about this for almost half an hr and completely miss the mark the whole time.

Can I get some clarity on how much hatred you need of a black person before it becomes okay to make slavery-era caricatures of their family?

I had no idea why this thread was so long, I was like jeez they been making fun of Kanye about his game for yeas (literally) but then I heard the mammy talk and re watched the video yikes! A black ass fish with big red lips depicted a black woman.... yeah I can't get jiggy with that.
I do wonder if it was intentional but even if it wasn't knowing the creators they'll double down on it for comedic effect

20 pages later and the best explanation that's been given is that its funny because its offensive.

We've had page after page filled with people trying to turn this into a thing about South Park in general, a thing about defending Kanye West, pretty much everything but what's actually being discussed, and at this point its clear its because the majority of people lack the ability to either empathize with how people are feeling about this or just lack the ability to have a conversation with this level of nuance.

And that's before getting the more bold displays of racial ignorance that's plagued this thread.

Craziest thing is that I'm actually a fan of the show and most of my "outrage" comes from thinking the show to be better than this and the disappointment in seeing something I grew up with become so distant from my current positions in life.

Girts and Korey over at Double Toasted gave their input and it's crazy that they talk about this for almost half an hr and completely miss the mark the whole time.

Girts' entire argument seems to be that Kanye's intentions in making and promoting a game to honor his late mother's memory amounts to a cynical self-enrichment publicity stunt, and therefore it's fine to turn his mother into a mammy.

Even more interesting is Goodwin invoking Michael Richards as an example of indefensible comedy in poor taste, but can't make the connection that this depiction of Donda west is literally calling her a N***** in the same way.
