‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Unseats ‘It' as ‘Lego Ninjago' Disappoints

”Kingsman: The Golden Circle" is the new ruler of the box office.

The sequel from Fox is expected to earn $39 million this weekend from 4,003 locations. That's slightly below where tracking had pegged it (somewhere in the $40 millions), but above the original ”Kingsman" movie, which earned $36.2 million when it opened in 2015.

Meanwhile, ”The Lego Ninjago Movie" from Warner Bros. looks like a miss, as it's tracking for $21.2 million from 4,047 locations. Earlier projections pegged the opening above $30 million. And the Lego franchise is seeing diminishing returns. The original opened to $69.1 million in 2014. Then, ”The Lego Batman Movie" opened earlier this year to $53 million. The latest movie is connecting with an especially young audience — 46% of viewers were under the age of 18.

There's also Entertainment Studios' horror entry ”Friend Request," which is barely registering. The film is tracking for a $2.4 million opening from 2,573 locations.

That leaves Warner Bros. and New Line's ”It" in second for the weekend ($30 million from 4,007 theaters). Earlier in the week, the blockbuster passed ”The Exorcist" to become the highest-grossing horror movie of all time.

CBS Films and Lionsgate's ”American Assassin" is tracking for the fourth spot this weekend with $6.2 million from 3,154 locations. And Open Road's ”Home Again," starring Reese Witherspoon, should round out the top five with $3.3 million from 2,685 spots.

In limited release, ”Stronger," from Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate, is expected to make $1.75 million from 574 locations. Fox Searchlight's ”Battle of the Sexes" is serving $525,000 from 21 theaters.

Focus Features' ”Victoria and Abdul" is opening to $152,000 from four spots, including a great showing at the Paris theatre in New York. Next weekend the film will expand to about 75 locations in the top markets, with plans to go wide on Oct. 6.

”We're very excited about how the film did," said Focus' distribution chief Lisa Bunnell. ”It's a very entertaining film, and people want to see films that make you feel good," she said.

More to come...

I screwed up my Homecoming post in the other thread. I looked at an individual day and thought it was a projection for the weekend. Still don't think it can reach Spidey 3 though.

Is Ninjago any better than the direct to DVD movies they put out?

Grizzlyjin

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Isn't that kinda disappointing for Kingsman? First one was completely unknown and got good buzz afterwards, you'd think a sequel would be stronger. And given the word of mouth, I can't see it having the same legs.

Jeez Cars 3 really tanked. I wonder if they're still selling a lot of toys, or if the kids moved on.

I liked IT a lot and I'm having a hard time grasping that MC score. Is it because it's less horror and more Stand By Me?

It's damaged already.

Batman got lukewarm reaction and now this.

Pleased to be right that it would underperform, since even Batman did and this is no Batman.

The poster who bet that Homecoming would top BvS worldwide has won his bet.

Man I wish I had gone in on that prediction. I felt like it was a bit of a long shot though after the Amazing Spiderman films.

Really puts things into perspective for BvS though, lord have mercy.

Not a great start for Kingsman. Yes it's slightly up from the original but Kingsman 1 also had good WOM and solid legs. I'm expecting K2 to not leg in the same way.

Also Ninjago is poor as well. After this and Batman I don't think we will see them explore much more spin off Lego films (outside the direct to DVD stuff)

IT becoming the highest grossing horror movie of all time should be bigger news! That's huge!

It's not. That's just PR glibly stating that $1 US 2017 = $1 US 1973. If you make any attempt to adjust or use a calculated metric such as some clever GAFFERs have it immediately drops down.

The Exorcist made well over $200 million in 1973. 1973! Common sense alone tells you how much bigger it was both in terms of box office and zeitgeist influence.

That said IT is definitely a big hit I just wish the film industry wouldn't annoy me with it's fake value comparisons to declare records that can't actually be objectively declared.

EDIT: meant to note that's not that good an opening for Kingsman IMHO. Barely above the original with benefit of good WoM from the original. Seems the first immediately set the ceiling for the franchise and I'm worried it won't have as good legs either. It should be profitable but it doesn't seem to be expanding much as a franchise which I'm sure was the goal.
