FIFA 18 Review Thread

These reviews are starting to become a lot like FIFA, in that they have the same feel, trend, buzzwords and ifs and buts as previous year's reviews.

Bestbuy as well, and you get the $10 rewards with it, plus GC discount.
I just preordered the Switch one today for that, well that and I remembered I had a BB gift card so eh. Worst case I figure I'd get rid of it in one of those Gamestop 60% bonus trade deals.
Kat Bailey of US Gamer mentioned on Twitter that Switch review codes are not being given out until release day
...I'm hoping the positive previews are indicative of the final product not sucking.

The gameplay to this day has not been fixed. Small things like player switching, year in year out they gives me the player furthest from the ball, like why. The gameplay still feels not that reactive, slightly better, but still there's issues. I can write an essay what they need to fox in gameplay. Last year they took out training mode, no one blinked an eye.

Manager mode is still pure garbage, FIFA 07 had a better manager mode, then freaking 18. Alex Hunter gameplay looks the same, exactly the same. Nothing major changed.

I can go on and on, yet these 'gaming outlets' don't hold EA to the fire and this is why we FIFA stays garbage.

FIFA is an ultimate team machine.

I end up playing FIFA a lot during the year because in between its many warts it satisfies a hobbyists aching with what it approximately offers.

However, this take is pretty accurate.

I'm not a UT user at all, and am almost exclusively a manager career mode player (with a bit of pro clubs here and there), and most of the mode's annual development budget goes into adding a few touches of paint here and there—like your manager avatar last year, and those club objectives that were more or less broken or in some cases purely cosmetic, and this year with some refreshes of a few menus and a handful of cutscenes with a radial menu for transfer negotiations.

Meanwhile, development on the mode itself has stagnated. For some reason it is still only 15 seasons in length, and is riddled with legacy bugs like teams stockpiling world class talent at a single position, or clubs always keeping their stars on the bench and fielding truly odd starting XI's for every match, youth players not having their mental attributes develop, and I could go on.

FIFA 07's career mode was a deeper and better functioning world of football simulator.

I get there is no incentive to develop and overhaul the offline modes, but it's just disappointing when an aspect of a game takes steps backwards and stays there year after year, and especially since I really do enjoy the gameplay.

Oh, and can we find a way to get some more leagues and real stadiums in the game. Really? The German third division is the best FIFA could do (I'm happy to have it just the same)?

I understand what they are trying to do with defending but they haven't communicated this to people properly. The defending went from hold X to jockeying and now it seems a mix. They are trying to force people to concentrate when defending but they didn't highlight a significant change like this. Look at how easy it is to bypass the defensive line and get a goal.

For me the main improvements that fifa has over PES are the animations of the players and the ball physics are much better.

Mmm it seems weird that amazon UK don't have the switch version in stock for sale.

It keeps going on and off. More unavailable than available though. It was available again a couple of days ago but I'm on the edge between that and getting it on eshop for the comfort of having it available at any time without changing cards.

Wait you gotta charge the card before using FIFA? Dayummmm

I kid I kid. Yeah I would normally agree however gonna try and keep other games as downloaded ones - rocket league etc. Plus if this turns out to be the only FIFA on switch (please god no) it might hold its price for resale.

FYI the game is completely broken on PC. I would advise people not to buy it. Crashes, soft locks, stuck on loading screens. Played about 2 minutes after a few hours of trying to get it to work.

Worrying that no reviews I read mentioned any of this

Works perfectly for me

I played a game on it yesterday and it literally just seemed like fifa. If there's anything majorly wrong with it, then it wasn't immediately apparent from a one off exhibition match.
That’s reassuring. Hoping my gameseek order arrives Friday but not holding any hope.

Can't believe the cutscenes in The Journey where tall or giant players turn into midgets(head placed on small body) have not been fixed.

How do they get that past QA?

You know how Spurs never made a superstar signing in the summer but are still really good and should really end up in the top four of the Premier League? Well, FIFA is Spurs this year.

Stick with me here. I'll explain.

FIFA 18 is really good, but there's no headline-grabbing game-changer, no jaw-dropping new way to play, no superstar signing to get the heart racing. It's jam-packed with welcome gameplay improvements and clever new modes, but FIFA 18 is no revolution. FIFA 18 is better than FIFA 17, for sure. In fact, it's the best FIFA in years. But it's an unspectacular upgrade.

A really good summary of what FIFA 18 is about

I don't enjoy it a lot on PC. Too few changes in the gamepla (demo was misleading in that regard), still way too rigid compared to PES. Career mode is still broken. Lacks a lot of real faces. Some player ratings are a real joke. The Journey might be the only thing left but I didn't finish it last year. All the money is going for partnerships/licensing, pretty graphics and bad writing, and FUT updating. There must be 50 people really working on the game, including UI and minor gameplay changes.

I guess I'll play PES as much as possible and will go back to FIFA later this year. It doesn't look as good (the grass especially) but you can really control the player and the squad as a whole (with real tactics). And you can mod it ! (I still need to see the extend of that though)

What's all the hilarity about using the phrase "streets ahead"?

Is it not a normal phrase in America or something?

This is the area that I always feel PES is superior to FIFA in. Fifa always feels too floaty to me with jerky animations.

The sense of weight never feels quite right.

For people with concerns like IGN's, play the game with manual controls. It completely changes the complexity of the game once you get the controls down. Just try it.

Says improvements across the board, Please explain the ones to Pro clubs and the catalogue. Slowed the gameplay down to Fifa 16 which was slower, Which will end up being faster for Fifa 19 which in turn is just how it is now in Fifa 17.

We'll see if defenders at 80 overall can still catch a 94 rated speedster side by side running like they do in Pro clubs.

Wait, Brazil Ronaldo isn't 5 star for skills?? Holy shit people are going to faint from the blood pressure. What kind of moron doesn't notice this considering the guy is on the cover of a special edition lmao.

Anyone know how I can get a free Xbox Live trial, even if it's just a 24hour trial?

Would actually pay another £3 for another 10 hours of EA access FIFA 18.

hahah this game. It needs patches and it needs therm fast.

Playing this online, every game is about 8-5. Defending feels broken and pretty much all shots feel like they go in.

Dunno what exactly they've changed with defending but no one can do it anymore. Strikers just run through everyone.

It doesn't need to be patched, it needs to learn how to defend and not rely full on AI when defending. You need to timely switch the player (you should put on manual at least the player switching). Anyhow, you can use legacy defending if you like the FIFA defending of old times. And it's always like this the first days until people learn the new defence.

Seems like the defenders AI has been drastically downgraded, so basically you need to do it all yourself, this you can learn. The real problem for me seems to be that keepers are absolute garbage and every low driven shot is going in.
