Avatar’ Starts Production Today; $1 Billion Budget

Things of note here:

I doubt the sequels will have the absurd legs the first one did, but they will open way higher

Avatar 1 made like 200 mil in China. In 2009.
Jurassic World made about the same. In 2015.

Shit's gonna be POPPIN'

Avatar 2 about to get that Stephen Chow money

I'll never understand how people can doubt Cameron at this point. I just don't.
Cameron isn't actually God. Pride before the fall and all that. There's a lot of pride in this insane goal of shooting 4 Avatar movies back to back.

I was optimistic about Avatar's chances.

The first wasn't great as a film, but it sure was impressive as a spectacle. Not just the 3D (which was fantastic) but the quality of the effects in general and the eye catching originality of the world. I'm hoping for major advancements in visual effects for these sequels given how many years it's been. Oh, and good stories would be nice!

4 sequels seems a bit nutty, but I'm definitely interested in seeing what Cameron can pull off.

I would wager its probably not a real 4 sequels. Likely 3 movies with the third split into Part 1 and Part 2 like Hollywood tends to do these days to squeeze as much money out as possible.

Anybody really excited for Avatar sequels almost 10 years after the 1st one?
Yes. Extremely excited. I've been waiting since 2009 and dealt with multiple heart- breaking delays. The only movies I really really look forward to are Cameron's. Nobody is on his level when it comes to providing sheer entertainment.

$1 billion is more than reasonable for 4 modern blockbuster summer tentpole movies. That's an average budget per film of $250 million which is pretty typical for a big movie budget these days.

Are people really betting against Cameron ?
Do people really think these movies won't make loads of fucking money even if they gross less as time goes on ?
I don't expect any of them to make as much as Avatar but still people will watch them .

Actually I think $250 is on the really high side. It's not particularly uncommon but it's still up there.

Considering that cameron writes complete script and draws movie from beginning to an end before shooting, I'm quite optimistic about the budget and quality of what we will see on screen.

Hoping for 60fps HFR with HDR as it is supported by home equipment and at 30fps for older formats.

I don't think Avatar has had much of a cultural impact anywhere

I just got back from Disney, and people were waiting 3 hours to do the 5 minute Pandora VR attraction. It was one of the craziest experiences I've ever had. Everyone in the park was going nuts over Pandora shit.

YEAH BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE STILL TALK ABOUT AVATAR?

Maybe if we make more than 8 threads a year asking if anybody still talks about Avatar, we'll finally work out if anybody does.

You know, interestingly, more and more lately, as I've noticed, there seems to be a revival of interest on Avatar, which is very timely.

I haven't seen avatar since the theater but I live in Orlando and know how insanely popular the ride is at Animal Kingdom. I'm excited to see how he revolutionizes cinema this time. Give me an immersive experience. I trust him to make an amazing spectacle out of this.

Did both rides back in June. Rope dropped Flight of Passage and only waited 30 minutes, and fastpassed the River Journey. Flight was legit the best theme park ride I've ever experienced, and the queue was just as good. The floating avatar animatronic in the tank was the most surreal thing I've ever seen. And I'm convinced the shaman at the end of the river ride was a real na'vi. Disney's imagineers and Cameron are magic.

I was so taken with the experience that I paid the $80 to have my face scanned and had a custom avatar figure made for me.

I know I'm just responding to troll bait but everyone knows you and pretty much every other human is going to watch every film James Cameron directs.

And Cameron will always be much better than all the hundreds of journeyman directors out there directing mediocre blockbusters these days.

There was a time I would have agreed with you because I loved so much of the man’s previous work but Avatar was fucking garbage save the FX.

No hyperbole intended, the film was insipid, banal and downright stupid.

How anyone could spend that much money on cutting-edge technology and have that many amazing resources only to write a script that derivative and tepid blows my mind.

Welp, people were in line for a Disney World attraction so I guess that settles it.

The point is, I'm a believer that there is much left in the ip. Cameron still has a vision of how to create a spectacle.

Also, to be clear the star wars stuff barely had lines in the morning, and were 40-60 minutes most of the time. The avatar stuff was never less than 120 minutes, and I saw 190 minutes at one point.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
ITT: people with really high blood pressure about the existence of these sequels. With a healthy dose of:

Dead

well not really...yet
Honestly can’t wait for these to come out and for doubters to take the L as usual with Cameron movies

I remember all the posts about Avatar land being a disaster in the making as well. 😂

what's been the impact of avatar? In movies? In sci-fi? Besides from the ride in disneyworld, is it really the cultural phenomenon people try to sell? You know the anecdotal evidence isn't doing too much for me.

Still a billion for the "4" (lol) sequels is ok.

its a continuous loop at this point. like sure say you hate the movie, its boring, etc. but don't go full on delusional thinking it will flop or that nobody will care when it's out haha.

I think it definitely jumpstarted the whole sci-fi film revival. There have been a ton of sci-fi movies since Avatar that I doubt ever would have been given the greenlight were it not for Avatar's success.

Is it still going to be HFR?

Im really hoping it pushes new refinements and research into cinematography at 48fps. Someone has to start this shit, and while Cameron is an ass, he is definitely capable of kick starting it should he commit to HFR.

Oh everyone is super invested in those memorable characters like... uhh.. Jack Sully and... Navi?

And... uhh... Sigourney Weaver died and...

I think Michelle Rodriguez died too?
...

...

The kids just are all about... those... things they had... with... the things.

Is there a single human being alive that would put Avatar in the same category as any of these movies? Y’know, movies that actually had an impact on pop culture?
Your post reminded me of that ridiculous article on people suffering from “Post Avatar Depression”.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

"When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed ... gray. It was like my whole life, everything I've done and worked for, lost its meaning," Hill wrote on the forum. "It just seems so ... meaningless. I still don't really see any reason to keep ... doing things at all. I live in a dying world."

Not one of these Avatar movies will make over 1 billion dollars. It will make the bill back but not over one film. I think this is a shit endeavor Cameron is doing in the first place. Like what contrive story you could put in 4 movies with this universe? Big meh.

Can I have some of the stuff you're smoking? Because that must be some strong stuff.

i've never seen titanic

and avatar was one of the lower tier blockbusters i've watched

like you might think the guy is a gawd but not everybody feels the same way

edit: fuck i remember the HISHE better than avatar. these movies will do fine, but it'll be off the back of sheer marketing force and china rather than star wars style hype

If you don't think cameron da gawd after terminator 1 and 2, aliens, and the abyss....Well OK. It's perfectly fine for you to not like those movies.

I saw dozens of people in line for Pirates rides too. That just must be crazy as well.

Cultural phenomena everywhere up in dis.

The last two Pirates movies disappointed in the US and were saved internationally so that's probably not the best example. :p
