343 Rescinds Job Offer to Halo Community Member Over Forum Post

ModNote: This is not a topic for you to air your hot takes about how awful/great you think 343 has done with the Halo franchise. No more warnings will be given.

343 Industries revoked a job offer to a halo community forger MultiLockOn who was already in the process of moving/quit previous job. Sounds like a pretty crappy situation all around.

Hey guys, I wanted to update you all on my situation with 343.

This is a little embarrassing and I've struggled back and forth about posting this publicly but I think it's best if I explain this once to everyone, and not a hundred times individually. As of yesterday 343 revoked their offer to me as a level designer. It seems that they weren't pleased with the way I've criticized them in the past between my posts on Forgehub and Beyond. So whoever made the anonymous account on r/halo and posted screenshots of old posts, well...congrats! You won. In fact you won to the extent so that I already quit my prior job, sold my place in California, placed a $2500 payment on an apartment in Bellevue Washington (among other expenses), and began transporting my belongings up there. Only to find out from the agency I was working under that my offer was withdrawn. Which puts me in a tricky position where I am both unemployed (no Treyarch or 343) and scrambling to find some place to live - as I had briefly moved my belongings to my parents during this weird transition phase. So life has definitely thrown me a curve ball here.

Now hear me, I'm not looking for pity. I believe I'm currently reaping what I've sowed; and it's not that I regret criticizing 343 publicly in the past because they are not above reproach - they know this as well. But rather the way I've gone about it could always have been more...professional. At least considering that my goal has always been to be in the industry I should've held myself to a higher standard (if that's not your goal then flame on). I suppose a little patience over the years could have gone a long way in this moment. I just wish communication would have been a bit clearer going either way to have avoided the pickle I'm currently in.

The expenses isn't the bad part; I can deal with that. I have no doubt I can find another level design job in the industry given time. The aspect of this that really drives home is that this was Halo. After all these years of forging, I thought what I wanted was 1: a proper editor without boundaries, 2:to be a professional. It wasn't until I was sitting at Treyarch working on the highest grossing video game franchise in the world with every ounce of dev power at my disposal did I realize that it wasn't about the editor, or the money, or the prestige. In fact after a 12 hour work day at Treyarch I would commute 3 hours home, sit down in front of my xbox, and start forging. And I think it was in that moment that everything really clicked - nothing really matters unless you're building for the game you love. And for as long as I can remember it's been Halo, it's always been Halo. All the dev tools in the world couldn't drive me away from clunking blocks together in forge just to have a single good 2v2 match before I knocked out for the night. People always ask me why I play so much Halo 5 (Level 142) if all I do is bitch about it. Well, I'd rather play a Halo game I hate than the greatest Battlefield game out there. Or the best Call of Duty. Or the best such and such. Even with all the frivolous mechanics that have entered the franchise in the past decade that I don't agree with, the simple ebb and flow of a good pistol battle is something that you're not going to find elsewhere.

I was excited to leave my cushy Southern California to go to rainy Washington, I was excited to take a ~$10,000 paycut. I was excited because I had finally made it to the place I felt like I was born to be in; Halo. And honestly that's all that mattered to me - working on the franchise that I loved. So to essentially already be in the door and then pushed back out is....difficult. And even more difficult knowing that this is essentially a forever no, a "you insulted our franchise and employees and will probably never get a chance to work here" no. It's disheartening to the point where I'm not even sure if I want to pursue another position in the game industry at this point. In the back of my head no matter where I worked I always knew I wanted to end at Halo. That's what I love, that's where my strongest talents lie, and that's what I know. So to have the reality spelled out for me where that position will likely never happen is a hard pill to swallow right now.

The few conversations I had with Tom French were delightful. The man was incredibly friendly, welcoming, understanding. I have no doubt that he would be a pleasure to work with and a great man to work under. But I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm sorry this didn't end up playing out. I was as excited as any of you were to contribute to the franchise and hopefully really design maps that would stand the test of time, I wanted to really make this franchise the juggernaut we all know it can be. So, sorry to let everyone down.

The Post in Question was exposed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/719vgo/arguably_the_best_forger_in_the_community_has/dn9w73c/

Edit: looks like the post on reddit was removed by the mods so here is a screenshot of the post in question

Edit: Seems like there might be more to the story, not really sure what to make of it.

Um, it wasn't over that post. He harassed and internet-stalked multiple Community Cartographers and insinuated some pretty horrible shit about them. He knew what was up because he deleted all his videos where he harassed the CCs constantly as soon as he got his job offer.

MultiLockOn said:
Completely and utterly untrue.

1: I haven't even mentioned the word "community cartographer" in almost 2 years.  In fact I removed the CC video over a year ago when it was no longer relevant.  The CC system was disbanded, we no longer have those people controlling what maps get into matchmaking.  It worked.  There was no reason for it to remain up. So I removed it as a courtesy to everyone mentioned in the video.

2: Harassed the CC's? The only people I've talked to since I've received the offer are my usual forge pals and family. There aren't even CC's to harass.  I'd seriously give you the password to my beyond, Forgehub, reddit, discord, and xbox live account if you want to verify this because I have nothing to hide.

3:  I didn't "dig up dirt" on anyone.  I've never said this publicly before because I was defending other people, but the entire CC debacle and all the evidence WITHIN the video was given to me BY OTHER CARTOGRAPHERS who didn't want to work with Psychoduck/AgentPaperCraft anymore.  Warholic actually provided most of the screenshots and information; this was never disclosed because at the time he had a lot to lose and I didn't.  So I took the heat for the cartographer situation.

4: Pretty sure FyreWulf is actually one of the old CC's

This is all completely utterly irrelevant, and false, to the current situation though.

I mean, it's 343's absolutely right to rescind a job offer. But doing it after the dude already quit his previous job and was in the moving process is shitty, especially over a forum post.

Edit - As the topic has gone on my opinion has changed a bit. You don't publicly shit talk about potential employers and then expect them to welcome you with open arms later on after you've already told them you don't think they're worthy of the jobs they earned.

Absurd. This man's potential is through the roof. 343i is a special snowflake, who got their feelings hurt.

EDIT: I just read his post. Yeah I don't think that was smart of him to say...

At least, those are my thoughts if what I'm getting is correct.

But I am not sure so I'm going to reread again.

Did he state that 343 was paying for his expense or anything? Not that it would have a bearing on their decision either way, but I don't think they knew what he was doing in his personal life around their offer.

Anyway, this definitely sucks but boy did he make one interesting comment. It's one thing to criticize certain aspects of a game, but saying "no one at this company deserves their job" is pretty unreasonable. Can't say I'm surprised they rescinded the offer based on that.

this post is quite naive. would you expect to got a job at an employer you publicly criticized, saying everybody there should be fired?

not to mention you really think the people at 343 would be happy working with someone who wanted them all fired? attitudes like that are damaging to a corporate culture.

Obvious hyperbole does not merit even a mention. 343 better have found other reasons to rescind the offer because that's pretty innocuous.

the "flame on" remark makes me feel like there was no lesson learned

Uh... not really? It's two words in a huge remorseful, mature essay and those words aren't particularly inflammatory in any way, shape, or form especially given the context they're used in.

Were these complaints constructive criticism or toxic comments ala "Fuck these lazy ass devs"?

Because that's what's kind of making me lean one way or another.

That's very strange way to handle the situation.

Why not confront him about it, ask him to remove the post, and perhaps issue an apology? People talk shit like this on the internet all the time.

They revoked his job offer only because of the ”No one at 343 deserves their job” post?

A bit petty but I do understand why they would take offense.

Yea that post is pretty bad even if he didn't truly mean it and was just pissed about something

Pretty shit situation but it's hard to blame 343 for withdrawing it

As Sartre noted in his contemplation on Hell in No Exit, the true horror is other members.
lol I'm pretty sure Luke Smith ladled out some hot steamy bowls of a lot harsher criticism than that on the old 1up Yours. It's good to be the king!

I was expecting him to be a racist or something.

That doesn't really seem THAT bad. Is it rude? Sure. If he was good enough to hire it seems like something that could have been talked about and resolved.

The post was just "no one at 343 deserves their job?" and they rescinded a job offer over that? It's unquestionably a terrible thing to say, but I didn't think that would cost someone his job.

I went into this thread fully expecting that this dude wrote something on par with that sexist Google manifesto or said the N word, because particularly egregious shit like that has become sadly commonplace.

Wow, what a total bullshit move on 343's part. That is a completely anodyne forum post. I was expecting some kind of expletive-filled rant.

I think it's unfair to equate message board posts as a literal statement, and as things go, that one was a bit tame. Considering how toxic many online posts can be, I expected a lot worse.

I assume they rescinded their job offer as they expected the individual wouldn't be a good team player as they extrapolated he didn't respect his peers. That's understandable, though in this circumstance with my admittedly limited knowledge of the individual, seems a bit extreme.

I do wonder, did they try to talk to him after the post in question was highlighted? It's their prerogative either way, but perhaps discussing it and proceeding from there was the better play.

Either way, I have limited knowledge of the individual, so perhaps the points of conflict went a bit deeper. I can understand 343's reaction, but it is more than a bit depressing looking in as an outsider.

A reminder to everyone to be civil in their criticism. "No one at 343 deserves their job" is an awful thing to say; unfortunate for him, but understandable on 343's part.

It wasn't even criticism, it was just a drive by post.

Companies want to hire people who act professionally both in and out of the workplace. While I admit this is a shitty situation, I can only really blame 343 on the timing rather than the taking of the job offer.

Nightmare fuel situation.

Ridiculous reaction to common internet hyperbole made as a fan rather than as a professional. Only people totally disconnected from standard internet discourse could believe he actually meant that. Criticism online often has a weightless, hyperbolic quality to it. You need to be able to parse that. On top of which, they really should have found that stuff before hiring him.

Petty in the extreme.

Has Luke Smith ever worked at 343?

No, but he talked a lot of shit about Bungie and a lot of other developers. I mean, it was in the context of frustration over that he knew they could do better. I guess that's the difference?

"No one at 343 deserves their job". Well shit man that's...something.

I'm sure many of those working at Bungie posted stuff at least as shitty as that while on the internet. Fucking this guy's life over one stupid comment is waaaaaay worse than what he wrote.

Corporations are people too.

Quick here take this bribe and give us a 9/10 in your review but don't say anything bad about us, ok?

But really how did you know they didn't and he just shit the bed on his reply.

Oh no, someone said something mean about 343! Who cares about his talent and skill right?

And you guys wonder why Halo is in such a poor state. 343 only listens to positive comments and plug their ears for anything bad.
