Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

We're not expecting them in the bubble at this stage. If you can manage to quickly get your Cobra out you might be okay.

Ah, good, I've not been keeping up to date on the territory they're likely to occupy. I half suspected the CG's this week would have been a good way to draw the playerbase into certain zones and then spring the aliens on them.

I did have my first experience of flying to an alien barnacle and crash site this week, so the journey wasn't entirely a bust.

2 jumps out from Maia in my Corvette... Wish me luck.

Edit: Not going to spoil what I encountered. Make the trip. Look around.

And so season two ends with its last (not so) major update after nearly two years. I hope their dragged out Thargoid integration into the game doesn't stop them from going ahead with "season 3", whichever form it'll take.

Maybe there'll even be some Thargoid content for the super casual players like me? But from here on, I'm mostly just waiting for what news their October con will bring.

So apparently research limpets are in the game. Not sure of their purpose at the moment.

According to a reddit user, it's for getting samples from Thargoids:

I went to Asterope and idled in super cruise, waiting for a Non-Human Signal Source. I found two and picked the first. Reseach Limpet Drone ready and fire. As soon as the drone kissed the thargoid it turned red on me and gave me a good beating. The limpet took like ages but managed to rip a "Thargoid Cyclops Tissue Sample" out of the god damn thing. My modules began instantly to corrode... Low wake to super cruise wasn't a good idea. After some running I high waked out without problems.

I'd like to proudly say that I lasted a solid 10 minutes in my first encounter.

Hopefully weapons that will work are only like a week away or so. The encounter is only cool a couple of times if you already know you can't win. I'm already thinking about making the 20 jumps back to my home base. Not that it wasn't super cool...but because I can't accomplish anything by doing it more.

I might come back in my Courier or Eagle just for the hell of it. See how long I can last.

Yeah, I gave it my best shot but you can't hurt them. I really hope they aren't going to tie effective weapons to completing the CGs. I might try the research limpets but there's no point otherwise.
The cloud of missile-like insects is pretty cool though.

I'm out near Colonia so I can't have fun with the Thargoids until I get back to the Maia area, but I have to say that the upgraded route plotter is really great. It works fantastically with neutron jumps, very slick design and super effective. Frontier did a wonderful job with it. And thank God the galaxy map is back to it's 2016 functionality, they finally fixed it!!!

So far my favorite part of 2.4 is a galaxy map bug fix and the route plotter improvements. Eh, I'll take it I guess.

Gnosis is actually jumping out tonight, so I’m guessing it will have something to do with the next CG.

Also interestingly it has a schedule of jumps, two over the next two weeks around the Pleiades sector, then to the Witch Head nebula.

Too busy basking to defend themselves.

I wonder if their design was borrowed from the most recent Star Trek movie, or if it's just a coincidence.

So do I have anything to fear? My tiny-ass exploration ship is still out in the middle of nowhere, thousands of light years from civilization.

By brute forcing it with conventional weapons? Or ramming it to infinity lol

You use the AX scanner to be able to target the 4 hearts on a thargoid, each heart down reduced their max HP.

Once the last heart is dead you have to use the AX missiles to burn through the last 8ish% of their health. I don't think you can do it solo since you need to burn through their self healing. It looks like you need a full wing firing AX missiles at the thargoid.

You can actually hurt the hearts (which function essentially like modules on a normal ship) with conventional weapons but you must hit them with an AX missile first. CMDR harry potter was using a super penetrator pulse laser to be able to constantly do damage to it. Even though he was basically tickling it to death.

Now imagine how much more fun and accessible 2.4 content would be with AI wingmen that you could hire and outfit.

Eh. I'll take an actual necessary wing activity with players over AI I need to hire and manage.

Think of the people who play in solo though, what does 2.4 have to offer for them?

Forcing multiplayer to experience content should never be a thing. Hopefully more new anti Thargoid weapons and such become available eventually to enable players to possibly solo these guys, at a minimum these "scout" Thargoids. I'm sure bigger and badder ones are coming yet, those can be the "multiplayer only" content.

I have 0 sympathy for the solo players. E:D was designed to be a multiplayer online game. You can experience fighting the Thargoids alone and some have successfully solo'd it already. As for future enemies requiring cooperation, switch modes.

Look s like a MOAB (mother of all barnacles) site was found.

Thargoids seem to have varying levels of hostility. I've encountered a few of them so far. One let me fly around it wand get close without and reaction. Another deployed it's swarm as soon as I jumped in and rushed over to scan me. The third scanned me and had no response until I got near it while it was sucking up a canister, then it went full hostile.
