Play Dates:
We'll be playing this game over the next two weeks, from September 29th to October 15th. Feel free to reply with your favorite levels, screenshots, characters, bosses, your own experiences buying or playing the game as a kid, merchandise, fan art, or questions as you progress through the game. Take photos and share them. It's the OT this classic never got!

On October 16th, we move on to Super Punch-Out!! (Super Soccer for SFC Classic owners). We hope you'll join us

Food for thought:
What's your favorite level? Least favorite? Did you know about the pet bird cut from the game? Who are the Koopalings named after? What's the deep lore behind the Sunken Ship? Why is the water in Soda Lake so clear? Is "Tubular" the hardest level in the game? What the hell is the deal with the Koopas wearing Mario mustache masks when you beat the special levels?

What's a SNES Classic Passport?
A SNES Classic Passport is a fun way to keep track of your participation in our SNES Classic Club. The passport will keep track of all the goals you've completed while playing the SNES Classic games. Each goal you complete will earn you a stamp! Try to complete them all for bragging rights.

How do I get one?
Simply complete any of our SNES Classic club goals and report them on NeoGAF. SNESBot will send you a PM with your updated, stamped passport -- feel free to post your passport in these threads to share with others!

How do I report a completed goal?
Just reply to this thread with the special goal hashtag that matches the goal you've completed. That's right, this is based on the honor system. Don't cheat! How do you know which hashtags match which goals? Continue below to find out this game's goals. You can reply with any goal hashtags in any SNES Classic Club thread, so if you're completing goals for a previous game, you can post them here or in the thread originally associated with the game! Optionally, include a photo of your accomplishment for posterity -- and the bot will stitch together a diary of your playthrough photos early next year! Confused? Click this tutorial reply screenshot to see an example of reporting a completed goal.

How do I not screw this up?
The robot should be smart enough not to count hashtags in quote blocks, but if you screw up and accidentally claim a stamp you want to refund, please PM me (Stumpokapow) with the stamp you want cleared and I'll clear it out.

Uh, I just replied with a goal hashtag and I didn't get my updated passport.
The bot is set to scrape the thread every few minutes and generate new stamps every 8-10. If there are a bunch of people ahead of you in the queue, you might be waiting a little while. Don't worry!

Do I need a SNES Classic for this?
Of course not. SNES, Virtual Console, SNES Classic, Emulation -- however you want to play the game, play it.

How do I get a European SNES Classic Passport?
Just reply to this thread including the word #euro in the body of your post (it can be the same post where you're submitting a goal) to switch to the inferior European SNES colour scheme. If you see the light and want to switch back, just reply to the thread including the word #us in the body of your post to switch back!

What's a star goal?
A star goal is the hardest goal for each SNES Classic game. These special goals are marked with a star on your SNES Classic Passport!

Your objectives in this game are:
1. Beat Super Mario World -- Beat the game by defeating Bowser and rescuing the Princess. Hashtag #morton
2. Complete All Goals -- We want to see a 96* on your title screen, even if it means sacrificing a Yoshi. Hashtag #luigi
nskbRcT.gif
3. Total Meltdown -- You thought you were going to have it easy? Uh, no. Beat the game by abusing memory corruption. You can use the Orb glitch, the Cloud glitch, or if you really have guts, code injection to skip right to the credits. But you have to beat the game doing something COMPLETELY unintended. And we want proof. Hashtag: #goomba

Good luck and have fun!!

Let me be the first to get the ball rolling. I've been playing a few hours of SMW since getting my SNES Classic yesterday and tonight ran through the Special levels to get the last few goals. Total playtime 3:50, give or take. I haven't replayed since the Wii U came out so it was fun to de-rust a bit.

Anyone up for an 11-exit race next week some time?

#morton #luigi

Edit: And for those curious, here's my passport!

SMW is my favorite game of all time. I spent so many days playing this that I know it like the back of my hand. I'm ready to blast through this again. So much nostalgia.

Very cool thread! I'll try to participate if I can find the time.

I've got the games scheduled to run through the middle of next summer and you can feel free to turn in progress at any time.

The tentative schedule for Q4 2017 is:
October 1-15: Super Mario World
October 16-31: Super Punch-Out!! (JPN: Supper Soccer)
November 1-15: Star Fox
November 16-23: F-Zero
November 24-30: Kirby's Dream Course (JPN: Panel de Pon)
December 1-31: Earthbound (JPN: Fire Emblem 3)

And feel free to participate even if you're not hitting the goals! Memories, fan art, photos, grumbling, it's all good.

Are we gonna be doing every game? I shit the bed on fiesta this year I should do this!

All 21 (plus the 5 alternate Japanese games) will be scheduled, even if it kills me. Depending on interest I'll either recycle this thread or create new ones as new games come up. Some other have expressed interest in making OTs for some of the games, but not everything can be first. I'm looking forward to finally beating F-Zero, which I confess to having not really given a fair shot!

According to some reps at Amazon US, their batches of SNES Classics won't arrive at our doorsteps until the 11th of October. That gives me four days to beat SMW haha!

You are forgetting an important game. Super Metroid.

You are forgetting an important game. Super Metroid.

I'm not forgetting it. There are 21 games and we have 6 scheduled before Christmas. We can't put all the crowd pleasers at the beginning!

Super Metroid is scheduled for January 1st-15th, right after Earthbound. The goals are:
1. Save the animals
2. Beat the game in under 3 hours, getting the Secret Ending
3. Beat the game in low % completion (14% or lower) or in reverse boss order (only possible with significant warps and glitching)

I haven't finished the goals or stamp art for most of the post-Christmas games so I was going to hold off before revealing the full schedule.

What a great idea. My SNES classic is in another castle - sorry, country - for now but I'll play along on my n3ds in the meanwhile.

Never really got into Super Punch-Out!! among others so this will be a good reason to get into some of the games I skipped. Not sure if I'll play along with Mario World - I must have beaten that one 10 times by now. Eventually your nostalgia gland runs dry, I find.

Anyway, back in the day I went from being a NES kid to a Genesis kid (after years of begging for a new console) and secretly I think I always knew I made a mistake. Used to go over to other kids' houses just for the chance to play the SNES for an hour or so, but so few of us had one and play time was strictly rationed back in the day...

Then one day during a hurricane our Italian neighbour came over and just gave us a SNES with about 20 games. I couldn't believe it - I was a 'one game at Christmas only' kind of kid - this was something from my wildest dreams. He just decided he didn't want it anymore, and he had money to burn anyway. Most of them were unfortunately garbage like Caesar's Palace, Super Bonk, Bebe's Kids, Bubsy 2 and stuff but it had Super Mario Kart and Mega Man X and fuck me, those blew my mind. It had Contra III, which we enjoyed, and Earthbound, which we never even bothered playing more than 5 minutes of - what a tragedy! I think my first ever JRPG would be Pokemon in 1998 - I just didn't understand the genre at the time. Anyway, that was when I finally got into the console. Probably 1995, I reckon - Hurricane Erin. Wasn't long after that, though, that the N64 came out and I and everyone else moved on.

I also remember deeply wanting Super Metroid back in the day and never getting the chance until I was much older. That was one of my all-time 'missed game' regrets. But when Yoshi's Island came out I was able to convince my brother to ask for it for his birthday. That was a big one, and probably the only major SNES game we got at release. What a game, though. We also got DKC2 in Christmas of 1995, that was awesome. Yoshi's Island and DKC2 are probably my fondest memories of the SNES. The stuff that came out early in its life before I had one are in a totally different, nostalgia-free bracket in my mind. Stuff like F-Zero and Pilotwings etc.

I wish I could remember all the games we had but my memories are so fuzzy. Anyway, cheers to everyone who set all this up. Great games, great memories.

Well given getting all 96 exits in Mario World was one of my first personal goals when the SNES Mini arrives today anyway, I'd be a fool to not take part. That third stamp is going to be a right bugger, though.

And #euro naturally.

Question: are we limiting it to the SNES version of SMW? As in, we're not considering the GBA port with bad colors, awful sound, and a better Luigi?

Was planning on playing this all day tomorrow anyways, I'm in! I'm not one to have favorite albums, movies, etc., but it's REALLY hard for me to not think of SMW immediately after hearing/reading "greatest game of all time."

Just wanted to pop in and say this is an awesome idea, a really great way to enjoy the Super NES mini library. Will start tonight when I get my Euro mini.

I'm so in.

That being said, I admit to not being very good at 2D Mario, so this first one will be a struggle. I'll definitely beat the game though. Who knows? Maybe this will be my golden opportunity to get gud at SMW. I can at least try for challenge #2!

Same. I'm gonna just aim to finish it, not the other goals.

Weird to think I haven't played this game in like... 20 years? 25 years? Looking forward to it. :D

This sounds good, not sure if I'll be able to get that third goal, but the other two should be feasible within the time limit, my classic should be arriving today, so I know what I'll be doing this weekend

Subbed.

I remember getting all 96 when it originally came out on the SNES, I think that's the last time I played this game seriously but I'm definitely up for giving it another go.

Gotta get through this as quickly as possible as the Punch Out challenge is the one I'm really looking forward to.

If I have time I hope to participate, though I won't have mine until Tuesday or so.

I doubt I'll get all 96 stars though.

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'm in. I've got both the US and EU consoles on their way.

I've played the hell out of all of these games (saving Star Fox 2) but I'm down for beating everything again.

Wow this seems awesome. Won't have my classic until next week, but will definitely participate! SMW is my favorite game.

I literally haven't played most of these games(including the first one) since they originally came out, so it's been a bit. Wonder how rusty for these I'm going to be. :p

Oh wow, guess the classic has been in the post office since yesterday, well shit.

I always use Mario World as a test of an emulator, checking out its latency, audio, etc. While not "omg perfect", the SNES Mini is a superb bit of kit, and I was very pleased with what I was playing. And of course, once I'd started Mario World I couldn't stop, so...

#morton

Game is still as brilliantly playable now as it was then. I'm looking forward to giving it to my niece and nephew, who have only really played Mario since the New series, and seeing how they get on.

I love the idea of this, but I hope these Star Goals focus more on difficult challenges than glitches. Not being able to get them because I can break the game properly is going to infuriate me.

OMG, I had NO idea 100% completion was a 96*. I swear I got to 90s as a kid, but don't think I've ever seen that * symbol. I was convinced it went up to 100 and that something was missing or busted.

Might have to try again...
