Maid services at hotels are an antiquated and strange concept

Staying at a hotel tonight and it struck me: why would anyone want to use the maid services at hotels regardless of how nice the hotel is? They are invasive and unwanted. When I stay at a hotel I want complete privacy from the world. It's the reason I'm staying in a hotel and not a B&B.

Anyone else feel this way? Not once in my life have I okay'd a stranger coming into a room that I'm staying in while I'm not there and cleaning the areas around my stuff. I find it to be a ridiculous and outdated concept. Granted I have never stayed in a hotel room for more than a week so I can't speak to any longer term needs for room cleaning, but I can't even imagine needing maid service if I stayed in a hotel room for a month. Why do I need sheets changed or tucked? Why do I need trash picked up off the floor or a bathroom cleaned? If you're a clean person you can do this yourself, and if you're a messy person you can accrue the mess until you're done with the room and then either do a little cleaning or leave it to the maids when you're done with the room and all of your stuff is out of there. These are simple things I can do myself without involving some strange person looking at my personal belongings while I'm not there, regardless of if they're a trustworthy employee/person or not. The only thing you could possibly argue needing a maid for is bringing fresh towels but that's only if you're staying for more than a few days and even then you can just go ask for more towels to be brought to your door.

I dunno, I've never not put the little do-not-disturb flyer outside my door in a hotel. Do you use the hotel maid service? If so can you explain your logic behind it? Genuinely curious.

ok. Most people use them. Also....Why would you want clean sheets within a month? is that a real question?

Hotels provide safes now just for stuff you're paranoid about having someone near.

ive seen more than enough gaf hygiene threads to know that for some people hotels would become disgusting and chaotic without a maid service

People do like that stuff. As I sit here at the hotel front desk most of the complaints we get are because the stayover service wasn't sufficient. You're paying for the cleanliness/service so that you don't have to do it yourself. If you're worried about the privacy/security aspects then you're at a shitty/cheap hotel anyway

I'm in what seems to be a mid-to-high range Marriot, in a king suite due to platinum elite status. I just don't like people to see my stuff lol

You know they clean the room after you leave right? Also, its not your home and other people will need to use the room so it has to be cleaned for new guests. Its not some weird slave labor being forced onto unpaid people its a neccesity in the hospitality business.

They can do whatever they want with the room once I'm gone, I no longer care at that point. I also don't trash the room because I'm not an animal. I use it, keep it clean, don't let people I don't know in, and then leave it in a condition where the maid coming in after I've checked out doesn't need to do much to get it ready for the next guest.

They have this handy card on the door you hang outside and it says DO NOT DISTURB and here is the mind blowing part: you can leave it on the door when you leave for the day!

Sometimes it's a button too.

Hey, if anyone doesn't eat the continental breakfast, can you make a thread about how you don't get why people would eat it? We need more of these revelations 'round here.

Did you read my post? I do that, I was just curious why other people like the maid services.

I've been called an alien and an AI in the same thread, what an honor!

When I stay at a hotel it's usually just to sleep. When I'm gone for the day I want the maid to come in and clean up so I have a clean fresh room when I get back.

Unless you're staying at a super high end Hotel, you probably aren't spending too much time in your room.

I'm not sure if they're the strange ones in this situation.

It depends. For short trips say less than 4 days, I will decline service in most situations.

Unless it's a really nice hotel with turndown service. Longer trips, I'll allow service generally no matter the level of hotel.

Hmm OP is definitely hiding something from people

What could be so bad that you don't want people to see? As others have mentioned there's usually a safe for your valuable.

Really.
I think the correct question to ask here is why does at lease one person wonder why other people like them?

It's free. Or at least You paid for it. And it's called housekeeping, not "maid service".

I'm with they opening on this, I really hate being forced to tip for maids. Either be tip free or I'll clean my own damn mess. Free my ass.

I think understand what op is trying to say. I don't like people cleaning up after me and all that either, esp while I have my personal and private items displayed around out in the open.

I don't, no. You're paying the hotel to have a clean room to sleep in. Why would it be weird that they have people to....clean the room.

Just put on the don't disturb marker on your door knob if it weirds you out so much.

I just want my room cleaned of the bullshit trash my nieces bring in all the time during vacation and to replace all the towels everyone uses.

No, having a clean room is not an an antiquated concept.

Is it just me or is the frequency of crazy increasing lately?

Maybe OP got second hand high?

What makes the maid a "strange person?" She's almost assuredly more normal and well adjusted than you, judging by this thread.

Yes. On vacation we pre-drink alot in the room. Glasses, ice buckets, and bottles everywhere and its clean the next evening. Its great.

Sure you could clean it yourself, but then youre basically throwing that $120+ you paid for the night away.

They're adults who do this for a living and don't give a fuck about your personal items or what a weirdo you are. They'll pick up your underwear from wherever you tossed them and put them on the hanger thing, pick your pack of condoms off the ground and put them on the table with all your other personal items in a nice little row and sweep or vacuum up all the hair you've shed about the place, and forgot they did so by the time they're on the next room.
