Culdcept Saga is, with or without dice, absolutely brilliant, and the kind of game I can see myself playing for a very long time into the future. It successfully takes a couple of different approaches to traditional board and card games, and fuses them into something that you can spend a lot of time learning to master, and feeling really good about yourself as you do.

Dualshockers - 75
Culdcept Revolt does an excellent job at delivering that experience in a unique way. The constant stream of new cards and maps that are unlocked throughout the game keeps it fresh and helps with the story’s pacing. As I play past the 30 hour mark, I just hope I don’t have to wait another ten years for a new Culdcept title in the West.

Oh, sweet. I had no idea there was another Culdcept being developed! These games are great at capturing some of that CCG/Board Game feel.

I'm an EU peasant myself, so I'll have to rely on NA GAF to keep the thread active till Friday.

Really hope people don't sleep on this game after the miracle localisation. Imported the prior 3DS entry and it was well worth it.

Just got a notice that UPS was going to deliver my collectors edition to my old address. I think I pre-ordered as soon as they went up. Really looking forward to getting back into this since Culdcept Saga is a longtime favorite of mine.

Mine came in today. I owned it on a japanese 3ds so I've played a bit on that version. The story mode is ENORMOUS so its a huge deal that it got localized. Whats nice is that in this version you can replay areas of story mode. In older Culdcepts you could revisit areas of the map to replay certain stuff but the story would have progressed in some cases meaning it would either have very little dialogue or different dialogue. Now if there was a particularly enjoyable story moment you can relive it by going through a chapter and playing one of its matches. Plus chapters have extra routes to take so side story matches exist to enjoy too!

New to this game is several major changes.
  • Fairy Light was a spell that gave you so much gold per turn till you hit the goal, but now in this game that is a permanent element! No longer is it a spell only tool. Every round you get some gold no matter what. This helps to prevent running out of cash on long boards when dice rolls turn on you.
  • Telegnosis was a major spell in older games that let you select a creature you owned regardless of whether you lapped or landed on them to use their territory options. No longer is this needed because you now PERMANENTLY can select any creature on the board you own regardless of whether you lapped or landed on them and select territory options to move, exchange, level, or use an ability. However once you do something your creature will now "SIT DOWN" and not be eligible for you to perform another territory command with them till you hit the goal and they "Stand Up". This prevents someone from abusing creature abilities every round that level or attack. Overall it makes it VERY easy to try to manage land in this game and is a very popular change.
  • Two dice instead of 1! Now you can roll much higher and the age old issue of the dice falling out of favor and you taking forever to get to a tower or goal for money is alleviated. More dice equals a better time all around.
  • TOUCHING GOAL TO WIN IS GONE. Use to be in Culdcept that you had to hit one of every tower (north, south, east, or west) before you were allowed to reach the goal. This meant if more than one player had the amount needed to win it became a race sometimes to reach goal first. No longer...now ANY checkpoint on the board counts as a goal you can touch to win. Great change. No longer do you need to race to the castle. Any checkpoint will do.
  • EVOLUTION CARD! Now (and It seems to be a puzzle and dragons tribute card) there is a dragon egg card you get hatch and level up. You can level it to change its stats as well as its element and abilities. This allows you to invest in a card and create a new tool that suits you.
  • LOTTERY! There are now trap spots on the board that either take gold or give all the stolen moneys to someone. Think of it as the lotto house rule in in Monopoly if you want. It leads to cool moments.
  • SYMBOLS HAVE BEEN REWORKED! Used to be that if there was a board with two seperate areas or that was big it would be seen as areas 1, areas 2 or more. Symbols were things you could buy like stock and if someone leveld up a bunch of land in that symbol's element in that area where you bought the symbol its value would increase and you could cash it out for more money than you spent. Now though there is no "area" and every board counts as a single area. This means that it is MUCH EASIER TO GET GOLD FROM SYMBOLS! Another great quality of life tweak that leads to less moments of running out of gold.
  • MORE CARDS IN YOUR HAND DUE TO DISCARD PHASE MOVING! Used to be you drew a card, and if your hand was full you tossed a card before moving on. Now though the discard phase is not after drawing a card but at the END of your turn. You can have over the maximum cards in your hand now after you draw meaning you get the chance to use some of them before the turns over before being asked to discard any. This means you dont end up tossing stuff as much and can use more of your deck more often!

So many quality of life changes. Game is basically Culdcept of old but with a ton to let you make money easier, move around the board faster with less low dice rolls, and its setup so that you can use the territories more often that you grabbed!

This game series is my favorite of all time. Culdcept Revolt is one of the best if not the best game in the series. Enjoy folks. I'm about to turn on my copy.

I've always heard great things about the series so I'm excited. I probably won't get to it before the weekend, and I'm worried about quickly falling off of playing it due to everything else that's demanding my attention at the moment, but I wanted to support the release regardless.

Hopefully I'll keep up with it and manage to convince a few friends to get it as well.

Should be here tomorrow. Loved the PS2 and 360 games. Will play online with a friend too! Can't believe it's NISA that is bringing this here.

I can't wait! I imported the last 3ds game and had a good time but I'm super excited to see the series in english again.

This is a crazy week, got three great games coming out. I'll be picking this up tomorrow. First time into the series, but I am interested in what I heard about it. I saw an unboxing video of the collector's edition, and it looks really nice.

Hyped as fuck for this game. For those of you who’ve never played it, you’re in for a treat.

Might break down and just get the DD or regular edition in store instead of my LE that Amazon hasn’t shipped yet... :/

The LE looks very nice but I buy enough expensive LEs where the stuff included ends up just sitting in the box as is.

Rather, if the soundtrack's good enough that I want to listen to it, I'd rather put that $30 saved towards buying the full version given that it seems to have a fairly large soundtrack and there's only one disc in the LE.

Impressions please! Curious what you think of the game. In particular, how does the two-dice system feel compared to past games?

I'm a bit confused because I thought the baseline game was $40 and the LE was $60 -- isn't that $20 saved? But I can definitely understand a desire to get a full soundtrack. Were you thinking of importing it then?

If you like strategic card building games or fun party games, I think you are in for a treat! The PS2 game kept me and roommates entertained for over 100 hours -- there's some randomness but you can really feel differences when you tweak your deck. There's almost always tradeoffs in the cards, and the tradeoffs presented in past games were really interesting to think about. In the past I think the biggest issue was how long big boards can take, but it sounds like they fixed that with some of the improvements.

It is $40, but if preordered off Amazon it drops to about $32 or so if a Prime customer. Unfortunately limited editions don't get a prime discount anymore.

I have also never played the series but "preordered" it a couple hours ago. This type of game intrigues me and the reviews are good enough for taking a chance on it.

Despite having a Switch, I still find myself interested in a bunch of upcoming 3DS games.

It may be known to most but indicating the systems in the OP would be nice :)

Looks like 3ds only? I'm definitely intrigued. I like board and card games.

But if you preorder LE on amazon I think it should be $48 (60-0.2*60). So wouldn't it be like $16 saved? Maybe a little more with tax.

Personally I can't wait for them to drop the digital version... It's still showing up on eshop as coming soon.

These changes sound bad to me. They're made under the false idea that more means better. More money, more ability use, more cards, more symbol area!

At first I agreed with you -- because using two die gives such a skewed distribution, would it really be fun to basically always move 6-8 spaces?

But then I remembered how big boards could kind of be a drag in the older titles. The game always felt designed for small boards. Big boards had too few stops to get money, took a long time to go around, sometimes hard to upgrade lands... It just felt like RNG was a bigger factor on large boards. I am willing to give this a shot -- after all the PS2 game still exists for those that want that experience. But I suppose I am a bit wary.

When is it going to be up for download?

That's what I want to know!!

Yeah, I am definitely getting the game. Hopefully the changes won't be a big deal ultimately. I just had a reaction when I noticed almost all of them were things that attempt to make the game more friendly, which makes me think they are not strategy-centric changes.

Ah that's fair. I mostly played locally (casually) with friends or just singleplayer so I've never really seen the more competitive level of culdcept. I guess if the game is more beginner friendly, I hope it results in more good word of mouth and sales so we see them more often. Maybe we can even get a "classic" game mode in the next version.

I've downloaded Golf Story to help pass the time till they put up Culdcept on eshop. Does it usually take so long for them to put up 3ds eshop titles? I was actually hoping for a midnight release and now its almost noon on east coast.

Sorry for double post but I just found out there is free DLC (a free bonus stage) if you register by email in the next 2 hours:

nisamerica.com/games/culdcept-revolt/free-dlc/

Maybe its already in the LE, I have no idea.

I think the fact that this offer ends at 10 am PDT means the game will likely launch on eshop at that time (so about 1 pm est). For those of you like me waiting for the digital version.

It's unclear whether or not the DLC code will work for Europe. Wish NISA would clarify.

I'm intrigued by Culdcept. I have to say, though, that I've never played the series... and I'm hesitant to plunk down $39.99 USD.

Some barriers of entry for me, aside from the price (which really isn't a barrier, as it's the normal price of 3DS games released at retail):

1) 3DS. I had to put down Monster Hunter: Stories despite being a big Monster Hunter fan because I couldn't get past playing it on the 3DS.

2) Overwhelming. I'm unsure about the complexity here. If it is complex, which is fine, is it worth learning for a very niche game that likely won't have a sustainable online base?

3) Art style. Can't really get behind the abs-main dude.

I can assure you, as someone who played every title since this game series was first made including the japanesr only ds and 3ds releases you are mistaken. Ive played revolt since its japanese release in july and these changes are fantastic. You dont abuse territory usage due to sit and stand limiting things but it allows for enough more territory usage to implement your deck tactics more easily. You dont end up super rich because you use the increase in gold to fuel defending and invading territories more. Plus you dont struggle to defend or invade because you get more opportunities to use cards due to the hand size increase and moving of the discard phase till later. The increase in card usage eats the extra gold till it balances out your income to about normal for culdcept each lap.

Trust me since ive played this title for months and know this title and its pacing from every version made before now. From the sketchy selective defense of the saturn title to the kelpie old willow dominance and elemental shield power of the ps2 and beyond. You simply get to do more culdcept stuff with less of a wait first. Nothing got super aggressive or overly defensive in play. They balanced the new perks very well so no aspect of the game accidently grew dominant. It just feels faster to do what you enjoy is all.

Missed this by 3 minutes and Amazon still hasn't shipped my LE.

That's annoying.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that. I imagine that it's the same artist? The style seems very similar to the artist who was onboard for 999, too. Does anybody have hte name of the artist?

Kinu Nishimura, who was indeed the artist for 999 and VLR.
