Beer |OT2| Can't stop won't stop the fresh hop

Tried the Modern Times' Critical Band tonight. It's yet another hazy IPA. Not as heavy on tropical fruit, more bitter than most of the hazy IPAs I've had lately.

So I've been trying to get into beer this year. Been mostly drinking IPAs. Wanted to expand my horizons so I figured I'd just go to a site like BeerAdvocate and look at their highest rated beers. But it's all IPAs and Stouts. Not sure where to start, to be honest. I go to the local Total Wine once every two weeks for my usual brands but it's kind of intimidating to start searching among the wide selection. Don't want to waste my time with a bad beer.

Don't limit yourself to top rated beers on websites. There's so much good stuff locally, it's best just to drop all that overwhelming stuff and just start drinking. Not sure where you live but I would recommend hitting up local breweries and getting tasting flights, most breweries do this. It's a great way to try new styles and they're usually not too expensive.

I just grab a couple singles of new stuff if it looks interesting. Sometimes i find a beer worth buying again, and sometimes its crap and pour it down the drain.

I live in Georgia so I've tried a lot of local stuff. Terrapin, Creature Comforts, Jekyll, Scofflaw, and all of them have an IPA that they push more than anything. Only beer tasting I've done is at Creature Comforts. It helped me figure out that I like Berliner Weisses but not Pilsners. The rest I honestly can't remember and didn't leave much of an impression. I went to Total Wine and made a six pack filled with a Stout, an Amber Ale, a Wheat beer, a Pale Ale, some Belgium-American mix, and a weird bottle from the shelf labeled "hybrids" lol. Hope to just learn as I go and not get hung up on rankings/ratings. Thanks for the advice!

Had a chance to try Athena Paradiso by Creature Comforts and its ridiculously good, highly recommended if you haven't copped it yet. Also if you get Cigar City I'd definitely cop any of their stouts. Orpheus makes a good saison called Atalanta.

I really want to try Athena Paradiso but it's seasonal!! And I grabbed a Cigar City Invasion today so I'm going to try it sometime this week! I've gotta try more of Orpheus. I've only had their Transmigration.

Brewing up a California common ale.

Was just typing "I have no time to go to Fremont this week for cans" then I realized I am sitting about 3 blocks West of them lol. Maybe I'll walk there after work. How is the FH?

The Breakside at Chucks was good. I didn't have the F2F Centennial at Fremont, just ran in for some cans on the way home. Can't beat $9 for a six pack.

Poured my last can of Sumo in a Sidecar, and there was a lot of shit floating in it. Just all these bits floating in the glass. And I don't mean a small bit, I mean like someone dumped oatmeal flakes in it and they were floating around.

Seems to happen in a lot of the old East coast beers I consume. Read some small thing about it here: https://www.anchorbrewing.com/blog/ask-bob-brewer-floaties-in-craft-beer/

Also, didn't have that many great fresh hops last year as I did previous year. Hoping to taste some better ones this year!

Looks like we may be taking a long trip to Ireland/Northern Ireland next summer. Anyone know of any must-visit breweries I should put on our itinerary?

We just got 2,100 pounds of fresh hops at the brewery a couple days ago.

Smells amazing. Can't wait to taste the beer.

Rusty Nail 2017 got distro here in SoCal. Was able to snag one at my local wine/beer store, pretty psyched.

Also have a coworker that has connections with the head brewer at Mother Earth Brewing. She gave me some Bookoo IPA (6 growler fills) and Cali Creamin' cans for free, gonna be a great weekend!

Anyone going to Zwanze day this year?

Probably not. Tickets for the Seattle event go on sale Sunday morning and you have to buy tickets in person. It's a small place and I don't feel like waiting two to three hours in line.

I was able to do Zwanze Day three years at Brouwers, so I don't feel too bad.

There's only ever one event for all of Australia, and it moves cities. I went to the first one because it didn't require 10 hours of driving or a flight, but haven't been to one since. This year there are two events but none in my state.

I'm sad.

Trader Joe's Nashua NH.

I've never seen 99 cent bombers (22oz), but I guess it's probably one of the signs of the end times (or Harpoon made too much).

Bought 12, it's an OK beer but good to stock up.

Edit:
Has anyone tried any Lord Hobo beers?

Bought Lord Hobo Boom Sauce today as well as I've been meaning to try it, will try at the weekend and report back.

Picked up some Fremont Field to Ferment (fresh hop pale ale series). Damn good. They're doing four hop varieties, this first one using Centennial hops.

Only three F2F beers this year. Centennial, Amarillo and Citra. Centennial came out two weeks ago, Amarillo last week and Citra should be out sometime later this week. Then the granddaddy Cowiche Canyon (Citra+Simcoe) later in the month.

That Citra one is probably gonna be particularly great (probably my favorite hop ever), would love to try that and the Cowiche one.

http://www.starbranchandhopfarm.com/ this is basically where all the fresh hopped beers around here are coming from. Lots of Cascade, Crystal, Nugget, Chinook, and Columbus. Nothing crazy but still enjoying what the season has to offer down here.

Ah okay, this is first time we've had it down in SoCal, or at least the first time I've seen it. Looking forward to the next ones.

Having a Yeti Oatmeal tonight. I think I've tried all the other Yetis, but this might be my favorite. Smooov.

It's been a few years since I had Dirt Wolf, so grabbed a pack today. Was hankering for an IPA, and instead of getting SixPoint Resin (my current go to that is easily gotten) I decided to get one that I absolutely loved years ago. I am curious how I will feel about it now that my tastes have changed somewhat and become more discerning.

Having Crack the Skye by Three Floyd’s right now. Jesus. This is really damn good. So well balanced. The coffee is prominent but not overpowering the roasted flavor of the stout.

Having Dogfish Head's Oak-Aged Vanilla World Wide Stout. 16%, awoooga! The strong vanilla flavor does a decent job of masking the extreme booziness of this beer. But damn.

I didn't like it as much as the base WW Stout. The vanilla was a bit too strong. But, I think some aging will do this beer wonders to balance things out a bit.

The whole thing was too much for my taste. I don't mind boozy beers, but the WW just seemed excessive for the sake of it. But yeah, it might settle down with some aging.

Other than the obvious answer of Ballast Point, any breweries/tap rooms in the Downtown San Diego area that are must visits? Visiting in two weeks for business, trying to plan my schedule now since I have limited personal time

Hamilton's in South Park. Tiger!Tiger!, Toronado, and Modern Times in North Park. Bottlecraft in Little Italy (right next to the Ballast Point there,) or the one in Liberty Station. Most of those places carry a pretty good selection to choose from except for Modern Times, but I listed them cause they're gud.
