GAF, I just started getting into older Japanese bands and I am in fucking love.

It all started with This is a 1980's Japanese mixtape. Every song on the playlist is good if not down right spectacular. I've started looking up some of the artists I liked best, and so far my favorite find is this Miharu Koshi song, which I think lead me to this Miki Matsubara song, which lead me to this pleasantly upbeat Haruomi Hosono song. Then my housemate suggested Sandii and the Sunsetz and they are fucking aaaamzzzzinggg I'm obsessed

I want more! I know there's at least a few people here who love this stuff. Give me some suggestions please!

edit: ugh wrong forum lmao
haha was gonna suggest Miki Matsubara but I see you got that covered. Stay With Me is one my favourite tunes from that era.

seeing Cornelius in a week or so, and ive been listening again to his 90s stuff. rocking some Fantasma era tracks.

this badass cut up video for "Mic Check" was projected behing the band when i saw him in 99:

trippiest typewriter lesson with 3 letter acronyms. Takako Minekawa is on this as well:

awesome turntablist remix of Planet of the Apes where he has Roddy McDowell rapping over a beat & monkey grunts.

yeah the 90s were a golden era for discovering Japanese music. i remember blasting Boredoms in my car (Super Are) and listening to new releases by Pizzicato Five and Fantastic Plastic Machine. the Shibuya-Kei stuff has a huge legacy and it is fun to go back and rediscover things. last year i started buying old vinyl compilations from the 90s and there is still so much to discover. and it all feels so 90s to me now, all the heavy 70's references mixed with grunge and pyschedelic rock. all the funk soundtracks bleeding into easy listening and go-go music. the Serge Gainsbourg fixation. the spectacular taste in international pop. :messenger_savoring:

recently i've gotten more into the 70's and 80's, going thru a big YMO phase. they recently reissued a lot of the classic Haruomi Hosono LPs and i think Mac DeMarco covered some of his stuff, so that era is getting trendy again. Philharmony and Paraiso are incredible LPs. earlier this year i realized i was pretty much in the dark for City Pop but luckily it's all on youtube. it's been a joy discovering that stuff.
