A Hat in Time Review Thread

Weird there aren't really any reviews for this, but I'll share my hot take from an hour or two of playing for those curious.

This game is solid but the biggest weakness is that it is a constant tug of war between high and low budget.
The environments are also a mixed bag, areas occasionally are either too flat or too noisy, the happy middle is only sometimes there.

Those are my biggest problems and the inconsistency, especially when the environment is too noisy and you can barely focus on yourself for a short moment.

However, game is fun as fuck and really charming.

There's an entire thread to discuss the situation with Jontron. Use that thread. This one is for discussing reviews. This is your warning. Thanks.

Thank god

You have the option to replace VC with cute gibberish sounds (the way to go) or turn it off all together.

Fuck JonTron, but I'm not going to stop myself from enjoying video games because of this piece of shit, this is just giving him more power and attention.

Edit: Sorry, just saw the Mod post, will carry on over there.

Where is this option? I went into the audio-tab but I can't find anything about changing the voice acting?

It's a badge you can buy. I disagree though, the voice acting is charming and having it fully voiced was a very nice surprise.

This badge isn't 'cheap,' though, it costs 800 of the in-game currency to buy which may take you a few hours of play to accrue, based on my hour and a half of play time.

While the Stream release is very tempting, PS4 will be my platform of choice for A Hat in Time so I'll be waiting for that... but I'm very much looking forward to this and really pleased to see it finally release. I rather regret not being properly aware of Kickstarter at the time that the game's campaign was running!

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

how come i never heard of this game until now ?? this looks like it was inspired by my favorite 3d platformer of all time, Mario Sunshine

any news on when will it come out on PS4 ? if it's gonna take too long i might get it on PC

Gamespot: 7/10

A Hat in Time is slow to start, but it's brimming with the charm and collectible-finding joy of classic 3D platformers. Collectibles are both fun to find and help guide you to the game's best secrets, and seeing everything there is to see is its own reward. The platforming isn't particularly challenging, nor does it do anything especially new, but A Hat in Time's cleverly themed worlds and witty quips lend it a more contemporary feel that's just right for satisfying a 3D platforming craving.

Later this Fall.

There is no Switch version, and no plans for a Switch version. Game is only out on PC today and will release for PS4 and XB1 later.

It's based on comments by the development twitter that they do have Switch dev kits, but they aren't making any promises on whether or not they'll be successfully in porting the game to Switch.

This is mostly because the Switch does not officially support Unreal Engine 3.

I'm a sucker for collectathon games, but I'm not really liking this game art style. looks cheap.

It looks a bit cheap, but at the same time it also looks very charming, colorful and lovable. As if they have compensated their lack of technical and artistic skills with lots of heart.

There's also this:

There was some very weird development with AHiT and a British developer that specializes in porting games to Linux and its officially working on a Switch game(s?).

Linky

Note that GfB was hard and fast on shutting down the rumor. But the issue is bizarre nevertheless. As for the developer, their latest Linux project, MXGP3, was announced for Switch recently too.

Is not a confirmation of anything. Is just bizarre. Anyway, if there's ever going to be a Switch version is time away.

A Hat in Time is marvellous. It is so much fun. This is a 3D platformer Kickstarted off the back of the fact that a bunch of people out there really like 3D platformers and are sad that they don't make many of them anymore. This places it alongside the likes of Yooka Laylee, I guess, but A Hat in Time actually feels very different.

Here's a review from Haedox (a youtuber) that kind of sold me on the game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBA5j1v1IKY

When he started talking about Hat Kid's movement and tight controls after witnessing the movement in the video, I started making Sunshine comparisons. I think I'm gonna love this game.

EDIT: Watching KingK's review now, and yeah. I want this game very much.

Doesn't seem to be available on any 3rd party site outside Steam so the 29$ is cheapest there is?

Just out of curiosity - is this game an improvement over Yooka-Laylee? Gameplay looks a lot more like Super Mario 64 (more of a focus on platforming to do wall kicks and dives) which I'm totally on board for - but do the levels support a lot of that, and are the activities built around cool obstacle courses?

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
The more I see, hear, and read, the more I want this. Really hope performance is up to snuff on the Xbox version of the game.

I'm playing though the first few levels now and this game is good. I backed it very early and kinda forgot about it once Yooka Laylee was announced. How on earth did this turn out better? I feel bad about that early bird discount now!

I think lots of people on GAF would enjoy it, controversy aside.

Purseowner said they'd try to get the OT posted tomorrow.

Can't wait!

From what I saw it was a lot more quirky and charming than Yooka Laylee. YL has strange things and characters, but they are not as "incorporated" to the world as Mafioso playing patty cake then punching you. In aHiT the concept is coherent and the quirky characters designs have a an existence (story or mechanical), not just "random pun", and yet can surprise you sometimes (expectations).

Exception for the badges vendor who will always look out of place... brrr.

Man, this is polished. Tons of options on PC all in a snazzy UI. The main character has fun animations and it's fun to just jump around (it has the springy tightropes from Mario Sunshine!). It even does the Banjo Kazooie thing where the music goes through subtle changes based on your location.

This game is amazing! I keep getting lost in the worlds. Been a long time since platforming felt this good and fun. Bugs aside, this is one of the best platformers I've played in years.

Have they said anything about that Kickstarter hat yet? When that is coming out?

There's a database entry for it as a DLC on the SteamDB page.
