Retro-GAF unite!

Ha, just played a demo and am loving it. Will probably get it next. Thinking Volgar, Dragon's Trap or Golf Story after that. I really just want a ton of 2D and indie games on this thing.

My first purchase was ... Mario Bros. I've always loved that game. Gotta go retro from the get-go.

What's the best Neo Geo fighter now available on it? I'd like a fairly casual experience. I'm not a big FG player. Maybe original SamSho or Fatal Fury Special???

Wait...when did the Switch get Volgaar?

*looks it up*

Yesterday...huh.

I think I'd like to give that game another go, and that's a good way to do it.

Just bought a Switch in impulse. Been a while since I just up and bought a new piece of gaming hardware. Usually it’s the old stuff for me. Any of you retro-minded folks have game recommendations from the eShop? I’ll be getting several of the big 1st party games. Never had a WiiU

I imagine you'll get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (I don't like it as much as I liked Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, but it's still really good).

I'll recommend Kamiko. It's a short, cheap little arpg-lite hack n slasher with nice pixel art and a decent soundtrack.

Tiny Barbarian DX is also coming out, though I'm not sure I'd spend 30 for it. (it is a physical copy for that, though...so that is a consideration).

If anyone is interested, the very first Club Nintendo issue from the UK is finally finished and ready to be downloaded. :)

MOTW is very easy to pickup and the art and music is just incredible. You can also lower the difficulty in the cabinet options.

I bought usf2 for $20 used and I wouldn't pay anymore then that. It's a great way to play sf2 if you have a stick. That game on a Joycon/pro controller is no Buenos

I can only think of 2 games that have gone on sale on the eShop. There's no psn/steam like deals as of yet.

I'm not a stick guy. I was thinking about an 8bitdo controller. The SNES one or maybe one of their pro's so I can use it for anything. I have other ways to play SF2, including the great SNES versions on my CRT. Going that route for Neo Geo games would be ... expensive.

Absolutely going to get MK8. I didn't own a WiiU so I've only spent just a fleeting amount of time with it. My 4yo daughter loves playing it with her cousins. The "kid mode" or whatever it's called where you turn on tons of assists is just so smart. We can play together that way. I'm looking forward to it.

The Snes 30 works decent for fighters. If you're playing casually you'll have a great time using it!

I could never land on the carrier as a kid! (I can't recall if it was this one or the sequel though.)

it's definitely this one! yeah that was hard and the instructions were not clear.
also refueling mid air was tricky as well.

It's still difficult imo, lol.

Also I thought it was an endless game like RC Pro-Am? I guess not if you beat it, David.
there's only 4 missions. it's pretty short once you are able to land regularly.

i remember beating top gun. that was a hard game to figure out initially.

I never owned the game myself back in the day, but I did play it quite a bit at a friends house. Wasn't really a fan of it tbh.

Now that's a game that I loved!
Same with Snake Rattle n Roll! Always wanted to try the Mega Drive game, but never ended up picking that one up. To this day I still don't know if it's a sequel or if it's the same game with upgraded weapons.

Oh and one of my favourite pinball games to this day remains Pin.Bot on NES.
Such a shame we'll never see it on Virtual Console. :(

In terms of difficulty against the cpu, Galaxy Fight is hard as hell, probably the hardest Neo Geo fighter on the Switch.

You can always set the difficulty to "1". In any case, there is waaaaaay less going on in both Galaxy Fight and Waku Waku 7 mechanically than Mark of the Wolves.

I read the a.i. is still a bit tough on that setting, just like in Art of Fighting 2 and such. Though control wise you are right.

I think that the second game made it a lot easier to land. I don't remember having issues landing in that one. First one can be tricky, though I haven't played it as much since I grew up with the second and got the first a lot later.

Well... finally got my SNES Classic Mini. I played it for 10 minutes. Here's my review:

The CRT filter is too blurry and I don't want to sit 4 feet away from a 60 inch screen to play incredibly pixelated games.

The 720p resolution is also unfortunate because it makes the upscale look soft even without the crt filter. And maybe it's my HDTV, but everything feels too laggy for me compared to a CRT. The HDTV only has 22ms of lag so I thought it would be fine. But it just feels a bit mushy.

I think I'll give it to my niece when she's old enough to enjoy it in a few years.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Well, I remember hearing the NES Classic was pretty laggy, so I wouldn't be surprised... particularly when you're used to using real systems on a CRT, of all things.

The CRT filter is real bad, though. I dunno who they thought the audience for that feature was.

I really don't get the 720p output with no option to change it.

Actually, what is the SNES Classic? Is it literally an Android box with a somewhat competent emulator on it?

It seems a little silly to me that something aimed directly at nostalgic non-gamers wouldn't even have a 1080p mode. I mean, obviously, us nerds want 240p, but I get why that wouldn't be there.

Cuz it'd be savage AF

I own several PVMs/BVMs along with a consumer trinitron and have a ossc and still am playing with and enjoying my snes mini.
And I'm using the scan line filter on it.

Linux, and it has a superior emulator to all but the high end mature Windows ones. Better than Virtual Console it seems, and far better than any Android or Pi crap. It even has really well done horizontal scaling (unlike the NES mini) and perfect vertical scaling (hence 720p). Only thing missing is a scan line emulation option without fake CRT blur.

Actually with the great IQ and rewind and save state features it's possibly now my #1 way to play certain SNES games. Super convenient.

Agreed. The Snes classic is great and I don't think people are being serious. Scanlines without the CRT filter will be available with hackchi and you could always use an hdmi-vga adapter and run it through an ossc.

Ain't that the truth. The horizontal scaling on the NES Classic was horrible while playing in 4:3 mode. I got a headache playing the dungeons in Zelda 2 because of the shimmering of the brick pattern of the walls and switched to pixel perfect mode so I could actually play it.

Sounds good. Would love to have this as an option for for my living TV, as the real thing on a CRT is trapped in my basement. Would definitely need an 8bitdo controller though. They work with the mini, right?

OK, more Switch related questions directed at Retro GAFers whom I trust.

Looking at either the SF30 Pro or the NES30 Pro to use with my Switch. Anyone here have either one, or maybe even both? The SF/SNES30's are obviously closer to a real controller that I know and love, but the NES30 one looks like it might be slightly larger. Hard to really tell, though ... they are probably pretty close in size. But I'm not sure I like the in-line R2/L2 placement on the NES ones. Not what I'm used to on most controllers.

And would anyone have a good reason to recommend the Switch Pro controller over these? I'm hearing the d-pad on the Pro controller is borked.

EDIT: And I see the SNES/SF version is actually larger. Also, it's not out yet! Thought it was. Think I will pre-order.

Dave came over and introduced me to this little Saturn gem known as Layer Section. That shit fucking rules!

We set up two of my 3 monitors in TATE to play it. I got some footage for you guys. It starts off with some poor camera work, but I get some really great scanline footage during the boss fight and a few other sections.

If someone could make a gif or two of some of the good parts I'd appreciate it:

Layer Section is good as hell. That was one of the first Saturn games I bought, back when I finally got one in 2008. I suspected it wasn't very good, because it was published by Acclaim as Galactic Attack (which is maybe the most generic title ever) and was dirt cheap... but I was mistaken. Game is super fun, and looks great.

Also interesting: There's some visual effects that only show up when you play the game in TATE mode.

Oh really? Dave was saying it looks way cooler in TATE. I figured he was just talking about the aspect ratio.

Yeah Layer Section is great. And one of the still affordable Saturn shooters.

Unfortunately II is 3D and not as good.
