Marvel Announces Promotion With Arms Manufacturer Northrop Grumman At NYCC

I'm going to need receipts on that one. According to public information they only made two drones that weren't ever in use.

You think they are using the B-21's to bomb schools and weddings in the middle east? lmao.

Yeah that's never happened lmao http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...nsoura-human-rights-observatory-a7642781.html

How smooth does your brain have to be to hear news about a company that makes children's entertainment partnering with an arms manufacturer and immediately start damage controlling for them?

Do you also flip off and spit on U.S. soldiers too? I mean, have we returned full circle to the 1960's?

I really don't understand what you mean by this.

Northrup Grumman makes aircraft. I know what they do. They're a huge employer in the city I live in. The buildings in my area focus on defensive technologies. I'm aware that they make bombers. The B-2 Spirit was made by Northrup Grumman. They also make radar, aerospace software for NASA, and famously the James Webb Space Telescope. It's a multi-faceted company, not just "an arms dealer." Marvel hasn't even said it's got anything to do with their military division at all.

It's nowhere stated in that article that the B-21 had any part in that claimed strike. I would rather not getting into petty insults, but it appears you already started doing that.

Half the PR people at Marvel aren't communicating with the other half. Why the fuck would you do this after pulling the Punisher panel because of the Las Vegas shooting? Literal facepalm moment right here.

I admit I did comment before I actually did research, but I addressed that a few posts above.

And yea, they still make bombers, pretty sure those are used to bomb stuff. I'll have to do more research on that too I guess.

Sure but the reason people are upset is because of the recent shootings.

Upon hearing "arms manufacturer" they assume that NG makes guns.

Had the thread title lead off with even "combat aircraft manufacturers", people would still be confused but not knee jerking.

I wonder if the thread title said "Aerospace company Northrup Grumman parterning with Marvel" would have changed perception. If Marvel is going to be like "YEAH MILITARY WOO WE BLOW STUFF UP YEEEEEEEEAHHHHH" then that's pretty damned lame, but if it's something like "Check out this cool space stuff" then I don't see a reason for this reaction. No other information has been given, other than what that article posted and the person writing it seems to be writing with a bias. Let's see what it is before we set it on fire.

Oh, thank god they just make bombers and fighter planes. It's much more palatable for a company that makes books and movies for children to partner with merchants of wide scale, impersonal death.

The only thing I see coming from this "promotion" is the jets and planes in marvel movies may have the Northrop branding. They also make radars and work with NASA so the branding may even be tied with that.

People are jumping at the "arms manufacturer" in the title when they are hardly that. This is way different than a company like Smith and Wesson that directly makes guns.

Several aerospace companies also make military planes and jets in addition to commercial aircrafts.

If the title of the article of the article was, "Marvel announces promotion with Boeing" would there be any outrage?

So I am curious, then. Should literally no company make any aircraft for the US Military, or should Marvel just not do anything with those companies at all?

Northropp Grumman, like all other members of the military industrial complex, is responsible for untold human misery and suffering. Marvel comics partnering with them, while not overly surprising, is incredibly disgusting to anybody who doesn't feel an existential need to Stan for the business practices of billion dollar companies.

The only thing I see coming from this "promotion" is the jets and planes in marvel movies may have the Northrop branding. They also make radars and work with NASA so the branding may even be tied with that.

Yes. Now people can stop bringing up this complete non-point.

Some people took the message of Iron Man to be "Don't ever build systems for defense or offense, except when I build my suit for myself". The bigger problem for Tony is that he was a jackass that was building more and more powerful weapons just because he and his company could, was selling them to the highest bidder, and not tracking where they went.

Rich Johnston is a master of the clickbait.

While there is a discussion to be had here regarding the ethics in partnering comic characters with companies that make military aircraft, I have no doubt that the reactions in this thread would be much different if Marvel was announcing a partnership with Boeing or Airbus. Both make military aircraft as well, but people primarily know then from their passenger jets.

Now this is disingenious.

This is litterally the front page of their website.

I'm pretty sure you don't know what Northrop Grumman makes.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people in this thread don't know what Northrop Grumman makes and are only going on the 'Arms Manufacturer' part of the title.

I looked on their website and one of the first things you see is a stealth bomber and they go on about being able to strike anywhere... so....

Yeah, they don't make guns but they make the kind of shit that helps the US bomb the fuck out of people from miles away with drones and bombers and shit.

Everyone has a breaking point and while mine should have been sooner, I think this is it. I’m no longer buying or covering Marvel Comics.

Agreed completely

I suppose Age of Ultron is pretty telling, then, considering they made a big ol' crazy thing they shouldn't have that caused lots of problems. I get why people are upset now.

I still want to know why they're partnering up, though. I wonder if NG is making an actual suit for them as a PR thing.

Yes and Yes.

You have to be realistic. As long as there is a military, it will have aircraft, and you're not going to abolish the US Military. Even if we finally figured out how not to be awful to other countries, we still have a need to provide national defense.

Not sure how you extrapolated this, but some guidance: the reason people are generally against this are closer to:

- Comics being sold and marketed primarily at kids; this is in-the-crib military recruitment

- Comics are known for, as a whole, being anti-war. Northrop pastiches are often part of the adversary in the comics; Iron Man is literally based off someone being involved in the military-industrial complex and being 'woke' out of for what he's done.

- why the fuck is a military contractor getting into comics

- why the fuck is Disney partnering with a military contractor

I can see why that would bother people. My point was that it's a multi-faceted company and the military arm might not have anything to do with what they're doing, and I didn't have the thinking at the time to realize that it doesn't matter. I can admit when I don't get something.

... I also hadn't considered Disney owning Marvel. That is pretty odd.

Maybe I'm just being too optimistic that this has more to do with the civilian side of NG.

I believe the reaction is due to the recent shootings otherwise people wouldn't be bringing up the whole punisher thing as if this was a backtracking from that.

I do believe had the title reference to them as anything along the lines of "Combat Aircraft Manufacturers", the reaction wouldn't have been this severe.

Still confused, but not "Fuck you Marvel!"

No doubt that they are more heavily invested in military hardware/software than Boeing or Airbus by percentage (though Boeing has more defense contracts than Northrop. They are just a much bigger company). However, we don't even know why Marvel is partnering with them.

If it's for their bombers, then yes, that would be very weird. If it's for the stuff they do for NASA, or an educational program, then the outrage should be the same as it would be for Airbus, Boeing, or any other company with military ties.

Check this out: it literally doesn't matter.
