Wait, THAT'S the big twist? That replicants can reproduce? And Gosling isn't the miracle baby?

Man, cool movie and all, and fucking awesome visuals and score, but I think I'm slightly disappointed.

Haha lmao. Come to think of it, what are some science fiction films with a non-white lead? All my favourites in the genre are overwhelmingly white, but Starship Troopers gets a pass :p

I cant' remember who the lead in sunshine is, but there's plenty of races in it.

new ghost in the shell = SMH though

Watch the sixth sense or any m night movies

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Seeing the spelling of Joi's name and quickly connecting it to JOI in my head was the only moment besides the opening text when I wasn't completely fucking miserable and angry.

but yeah, theSS actually had a good twist. This one was just sorta eh and when delivered by one eyed woman holding a photo = even worse.

His point being that if you care about twists, watch M. Night films. This film isn't really about the twist. I didn't for a second buy that K was the born child but admittedly I wasn't clever enough to think it would be someone we've already seen.

That's the thing, there'll be diversity in the supporting roles at most and IIRC
the Asian dudes bite the dust half-way through the movie and I think the last two survivors were both white? Not sure.
I guess Get Out from this year could count.

Don't even get me started on Ghost in the Shell :< This movie blows it out of the water in every way.

So no resolution? No scenes of the uprising? No scenes at all of Wallace getting his?

I get the filmmaking artsy aspect of ending on an emotional note, but it would've been cool to see the revolt beginning on other worlds.

I don't understand how it's possible to fall asleep during this.

why is it confusing? How did Joe find the bees/sign of life? Through a scanner. clearly the opposition also had the technology once they knew where he generally was.

Makes sense, though it's not shown. Everyone is saying they tracked him through his car which was a long ways away. There were several plot beats like that, which didn't really work for me. But I can go with that explanation.

Which also makes me wonder why Joe didn't think his car could be tracked. "I came alone," he tells Deckard. In a car that the police department can track? Why would that surprise a veteran of the force? Why didn't he find a different car if he didn't want to be tracked? (I know, I know.)

I don’t know why people are dissapointed about a twist not being twisty enough. I don’t come into movies expecting twists. Here I was shocked from the first minute about Gosling’s character being a replicant.

I didn’t really think Gosling would be the one either because i did not expect them to Indiana Jones 4 this. So I was fairly prepared for that, or at least always had a grain of salt when the film was implying that he might be the son of deckard.

oh but the twist is meant to add depth a shock factor to the K story. Otherwise, it's just all sorta eh. Considering we follow K in this movie as the protagonist as he is led to believe he is a real boy and the chosen one, the twist mattered more than you gave it credit for. It just wasn't done well with a verbal exposition instead of more dramatic or interesting reveal.

The build up to the reveal had more oomph to me but I didn't mind. It's all about the journey to me and a twist with a soft-landing doesn't bother me because it had plenty more to say afterwards.

When I left the cinema I did feel like the ending was a cliffhanger in those respects but the more I think about it the more complete it feels. I didn't really like the final shot. I was hoping for something more provocative than a standard medium shot of Deckard.

The Expanse is all about diversity in sci-fi. There are three leads and one is Persian.

How was there no resolution? I mean, considering you thought the twist was weak, maybe you just had weirdly high expectations for certain aspects. Wallace "got his" by the fact he'll never know the secret to creating replicants that can reproduce and when this second replicant revolution comes, replicants will probably be banned again

How wasn't it done well? Some of you are WAY too quick to call anything being said exposition, as if normal people don't speak their mind all the time

This is me making an assumption, but he believed that the police supervisor believed him, since she was the one with the ability to track him, and she thought the case was closed. What he did not expect is Luv being able to waltz into the police station, shank the supervisor, and use her computer, face recognition and all, and track him.

Wallace needed to get kicked off a skyscraper to truly be a satisfying movie.

Was hoping Leto would get whacked but other then that I liked the ending :)

Gosling's death was very reminiscent of Rutger Hauer's death in the first one.

K turning out to not be Deckard's son wasn't just done for a twist, it was absolutely essential to some of the core themes of the film, like how according to K's memory in a way Deckard was his father, and which version matters more?

Actually, I just thought of a way. Be deaf.
How could you fall asleep with those visuals?

should have cut the movie where Joe lays on the snow. Everything after was redundant. BR2049 is his story, not deckards.

rebel replicant was all spoken and shown exposition = lazy af. We've only seen the woman for all of 20 seconds earlier and now she shows up to:

  • here's a picture (again - to hit you in the head in case you forgot you saw it already)
  • "and oh, you're not it."

very hamfisted.

Maybe it was just me, but the second Deckard walked in, I expected him to just collapse and have the camera pan up kind of like the end of Cowboy Bebop

lol

I don't entirely agree - in the moment I was expecting and felt like they were building up to some kind of closure with Deckard meeting his daughter. I do think ending on K would have been more effective though, and the other editing choice would have been to cut immediately to Deckard inside, then finish on Gosling lying down with the 'Tears in Rain' queue.

How else would have have found out he wasn't actually Deckard's son? They LITERALLY made all the evidence point to it being him and outside of someone who actually knew, the woman in question, there was no way for him to figure it out. Keeping it ambiguous would have also been dumb. Not every movie needs a vague ending for the sake of it.

Not to mention him finding out it wasn't true was crucial to his character arc. The entire movie posed the question of what is human? What is intelligence/free will vs programming? Everything from K's memories, to Wallace suggesting Deckard falling for Rachel was programming, to Joi's behavior and how much she actually "felt" for K

Yeah this film takes the first film's importance of memories and further explores them more in the vein of traditional existentialists.

I agree that this was K's story but his ending and death is to get Deckard to his daughter, their meeting IS K's ending as much as it is Deckard's.

dunno. but something else better than what they did would have been great.

The loudest score maybe ever in a wide release movie.

You felt the movie was supposed to end on an uprising which was introduced like 20 minutes before the movie was over? And that Wallace, who K never meets, is supposed to get thrown out a window or something?

What?

The loud music was great imo. The synths in Mesa when they're on their way to the orphanage was what I was holding my breath for when we see K return from the farm in the opening. Would have liked more moments like that in general.

Just got back. Incredible movie. I'll agree though, holy shit the sound mix.

I think maybe part if it is because the soundtrack itself is SO in your ears at times, with it's harsh sounds. When you combine that with the audio being set to 20/10, it can be hard on your ears.

Damn, I just don't get why we can't see space travel and other shitified planets in a $150 million movie

Cultural and structural decay, poverty, and pollution are all essential to the style of Blade Runner and its image of cyberpunk.

New worlds implies optimism and new beginnings. That's decidedly not what this genre is about. It's about ruination, consumption, and sedation.
