China is driving donkeys to extinction

The world's donkeys are facing a population crisis because of the huge demand for their skins in China, where they are used to make health foods and traditional medicine.

Donkey meat is also a popular food, but a huge drop in the number of Chinese donkeys and the fact they are slow to reproduce, has forced suppliers to look elsewhere.

Africa has been badly hit because the animals are such an important part of life for transport and farming - particularly in poorer communities.

Is there anything more destructive to animal populations than "traditional medicine"?

Uh, did you read the article?

The demand for Donkey skins in China is resulting in Poachers to go kill Donkeys abroad.

Yes I did. And there still being 30 million outside of China is nowhere near being extinct.

You can google many lists of endangered species - all listing species that have literally dozens in population in the wild. Unless you can convince me that there are less than 1000 donkeys in world (good luck with that)

In related news, I think I know what I'm having for dinner tonight.

Shame about that medicine bullshit though.
The chinese government really needs to make a big push against this « traditional medicine » bullshit.
Sadly, they doubled down on TCM in the last five year plan.

I'm interested in learning more about how the so-called 'alternative medicine' industry has affected other species. Does anybody have any other examples?

How different is donkey to horse? I've eaten horse and it was pretty good, but I haven't had donkey yet. I've always wanted to try donkey salami.

But they spent billions of dollars to save pandas, who don't seem to really have any descernable survival skills.

Niger and Burkina Faso actually banned donkey exports, as prices for locals increased as Chinese bought donkeys en masse.

But these days, there simply aren’t enough Chinese donkeys to make enough ejiao, so manufacturers are turning to Africa, where donkey populations remain in rude health.

In Niger, some 80,000 donkeys have been exported to China this year, compared with 27,000 in 2015. In Burkina Faso, donkey traders sold 18,000 animals to international buyers in the first quarter of 2016, up from just 1,000 for the same period last year.

In Kenya, a donkey abattoir opened in April in Naivasha to cater for the burgeoning Chinese market.

But this thriving export market is not without considerable drawbacks for local people. In Niger, the price of donkeys has risen from $34 to $147, a huge rise for farmers and merchants who need to buy donkeys to maintain their livelihoods. Officials are also worried that the demand for exports will decimate local donkey populations. In response, the government has banned donkey exports.

Burkina Faso implemented similar regulations last month. In Ouagadougou, the situation was reportedly discussed twice in cabinet meetings before the ban was announced.

In South Africa, meanwhile, the surge in demand has led to a rise in cruelty towards, and theft of, donkeys. In a statement released this month the National Council of Societies for the Protection of Animals (NSPCA) said it was “horrified to confirm that donkeys are the latest victims of the trade in animal parts ‘for medicinal purposes’ to the far east. Donkeys are being rounded up, stolen, then transported and brutally slaughtered for their skins.”

The fact the we struggle to breed pandas in captivity doesn't mean that they have no survival skills or are an evolutionary dead end.

It's pretty similar to horse, yeah. Donkey salami is great.

I "love" how I have friends and acquaintances who believe and support Chinese alternative "medicine" because you need to have an open mind and respect their culture, but at the same time are vegan or vegetarian to save the animals.

Donkey were created by humans. The current donkey is a domesticated version of an African wild ass, which almost completely disappeared. The concept of extinction might still be valid but one can think that these animals shouldn't have existed to being with, and they wouldn' have had without human action.

Moose Biscuits

It would be extreamly painful...
I think this is how you make mortal enemies of the British; I'm pretty sure I read a news article some time ago that said we give more to donkey charities than we do for charities for children or veterans.

Anyway. Couldn't they just, you know, farm donkeys?

They basically exterminated donkeys here in KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho.
All happened in the last 10 years. If you have a donkey you won't have it for long - they get stolen.

Is it that hard to make a donkey farm? I'd imagine if you can breed them quickly enough, you'd make a decent profit.

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me
"Chinese Traditional Medicine" is a fucking Maoist prpaganda bullshit. Sad, that people believe it.

I'm interested in learning more about how the so-called 'alternative medicine' industry has affected other species. Does anybody have any other examples?

Rhinos, tigers, sharks, dolphins, and many more.

Thats not the problem, the problem is their 'traditional medicine' constantly matures to involve modern animals along with ancient ones. Given the chance, they would say that proper tabby cats could cure cancer and they would do everything in their power to wipe them out to make a buck. Traditional asian anything is by default bullshit pushed by people that say that anything can cure your ills. This includes rare animals, fish, and everything inbetween.

Fuck everything about traditional medicine, nothing but a bunch of hocus pocus bullshit that's driving so many endangered animals closer and closer to extinction. Makes me feel sick every time these articles come up.

The article says they don't breed quickly, which I imagine is the whole reason behind the thing in the first place. If I told people that, say, farm rabbit blood makes people less ugly, they would try it so much it would eventually get rejected by not working (unless it worked).

Are we at least talking about medicine that's supposed to cure cancer and stuff like that (not saying it does, bit is that the way it's being sold?).

Or is it yet another case of the Chinese bringing a species to neart extinction because it's supposed to enhance their sex life ?

No, it's a domesticated animal. They just have long pregnancy (longer than horses) so they are a bit expensive to breed.
And since apparently it's cheaper to get them from Africa, people are just doing that.
But if they couldn't, there's no reason to believe that China can't breed all donkeys that they could ever need.

Well, cows don't breed that quickly either, but that hasn't stopped us from perfecting the process.

Well, donkeys are a human creation, they will exist until humans have a use for them.
If anything, the Chinese needing their skin for their 'medicine' guarantees their survival.

Case in point, donkey's population has declined massively in Europe in the last century cause there's not much use for them anymore.

Why does the Chinese government still prop that anachronistic unscientific bullshit? Is it merely a case of keeping the peons happy or do they try to mask a chronic lack of medicine in less developed areas by promoting 'TCM' as a "more Chinese" alternative?
