GOP Senator Bob Corker Says Trump’s Recklessness Threatens ‘World War III’

Senator Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, charged in an interview on Sunday that President Trump was treating his office like “a reality show,” with reckless threats toward other countries that could set the nation “on the path to World War III.”

In an extraordinary rebuke of a president of his own party, Mr. Corker said he was alarmed about a president who acts “like he’s doing ‘The Apprentice’ or something.”

“He concerns me,” Mr. Corker added. “He would have to concern anyone who cares about our nation.”

The senator, Mr. Trump said, had “begged” for his endorsement. “I said ‘NO’ and he dropped out (said he could not win without my endorsement),” the president wrote. He also said that Mr. Corker had asked to be secretary of state. “I said ‘NO THANKS,’” he wrote.

Mr. Corker flatly disputed that account, saying Mr. Trump had urged him to run again, and promised to endorse him if he did. But the exchange laid bare a deeper rift: The senator views Mr. Trump as given to irresponsible outbursts — a political novice who has failed to make the transition from show business.

Mr. Trump poses such an acute risk, the senator said, that a coterie of senior administration officials must protect him from his own instincts. “I know for a fact that every single day at the White House, it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” Mr. Corker said in a telephone interview.

All but inviting his colleagues to join him in speaking out about the president, Mr. Corker said his concerns about Mr. Trump were shared by nearly every Senate Republican.

“Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” he said, adding that “of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.”

As for the tweets that set off the feud on Sunday morning, Mr. Corker expressed a measure of powerlessness.

“I don’t know why the president tweets out things that are not true,” he said. “You know he does it, everyone knows he does it, but he does.”

I really have no love for Corker and he's pulled some real shit here in TN, but this is about as raw as we've seen an elected GOP official criticize Trump. No chill.

I appreciate Corker speaking out but the cowardice in the GOP is enraging.

It's nice and all but he's retiring. In less than two years he'll likely be replaced by the likes of Marsha Blackburn. By and large, the elected GOP are not taking Corker's side. They are muzzled by their constituents and donor base.

Like what would that even do? You think it would just be some kind of, 'oh, gotcha' or something? All he'd say is some variation of 'O didn't think he was that bad then/didn't know he was/he gave a lot of promises behind closed doors, etc.'

Yet, you and a large number of Americans didn't care for the years of bullshit he tweeted well before he announced his run for the presidency. You didn't care that he was lying all during his campaign and saying irresponsible shit left and right. And now you decided to care when hes actually in a position to screw up everything? He might be a liar through and through, but never once did Donald Trump ever hide what he was. You thought you could contain him. You cant contain him when nearly 50% of america co-signs his crazy bullshit. You had to know what danger he posed to the stability of the world. You chose power over stability and probably fucked us all in the long run for years to come. 90% of what he does in office is trying to get back at people who dont like him or made him look stupid or at least highlighted it when he was in a situation outside of his depth. The other 10% is spamming social media with irresponsible messages and bitching about the media.

Impeachment is a waste of time. You go from one crappy Republican to a slightly less but still horrendously awful one.

The next President should either be an independent or Democrat.

That's not how it works. Pence would be president only for the rest of Trump's turn, and would be a lame duck president that would get destroyed in 2020.

I'm really not feeling that the only people showing any kind of spine are retiring, dying, or not up for re-election any time soon (Murkowski). Makes it way too easy for his supporters to "no true Scotsman" these kind of comments.

This isn't true at all. Donald Trump is uniquely unqualified to be president of the United States. He is mentally unhinged and possibly guilty of impeachable offenses. Say what you will about the rest of the line of succession, including Pence, but they are all at least qualified to be president and mentally sane. "I don't agree with his politics" is NOT a good argument here. This is about mental fitness, as well as not (allegedly) being a Russian stooge.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
All of these GOP assholes thought he would pivot and be nothing more than a little hand to sign their terrible bills. They were too blinded by their lust for power that they couldn't or refused to see what we all knew he is unfit to serve. Now they are all too scared or proud to admit they fucked up.

If the majority of Senate GOP have the same view and fears as Corker and they aren't going to say anything then blood on their hands when he does get us into ww3
