The Evil Within 2 Review Thread

ACG's given reason is kinda headscratcher though, basically the combat is not survival horror enough and bosses being killable by your arsenal is an immersion-breaker.

My takeaway was that he said the combat feels loose, close encounters are sloppy, and these elements combined lessen the tension that should be there. Seems like the carefully crafted encounters of the first game might be lacking here. Everything else sounded better.

I think it's time for me to give the first game another shot. I didn't hate the first game but just kind of lost interest. From RE1 to RE7 (and everything in between) I'm a huge RE fan, so I was always disappointed that TEW1 never grabbed me but I want to give TEW1 another shot especially since I can activate Boost mode on the PS4 Pro now.

Yeah no there were some pretty bullshit encounters.

I wonder if this'll be a repeat of 2014 where the Mordor game reviews higher than both TEW and Wolfenstein even though it's much worse quality-wise

At least it seems to be an improvement over the first game. Might give it a shot, because I can't think of a better horror alternative this October.

This is not directed by Shinji Mikami? Yet this is actually better than the first game? How?

Last time Mikami decided not to direct a sequel and instead let someone else from his team who had potential do it, we got Resident Evil 2 and Hideki Kamiya.

People are really not giving this John Johanas dude a fair chance. Mikami knows what he's doing.

Probably.

Sure, I mean generally speaking. TEW1 plays like a set of encounters you can work around and manipulate without losing tension, though there's definitely too many crazy difficulty spikes.

Technically the last time he did this was when he let Shu Takumi direct Dino Crisis 2(since Mikami directed the original), who would then go on to create the Ace Attorney series and Ghost Trick. Mikami has good experience doing this kind of thing. :p

Besides, people hear Evil Within 2 is directed for a westerner and forget that the director was also one of the leads behind Evil Within 1 and directed the Kidman DLC for it.

can you please give us a quick review yourself? what mode did you complete the game on?
I did notice you said things were missing from the game yesterday which are actually in the game so maybe you played on a certain mode and those options are removed?

So you have not actually played it? This is not about bashing you or something, just looking for opinions from GAFers (who I usually trust more).

He watched a stream.

Hmmm, reviews are about what I expected, although I was still hoping they would be higher. At least it seems universally agreed upon that it's better than the original. The "open-world" stuff is kinda what I was concerned about the most, and the consensus seems to be that it's kinda boring, which is a shame. There's also the matter of no PRO support. It also seems like a dramatically easier game than the original, and that game's difficulty was one of the high points of it for me.

Now I'm kinda torn. Do I buy it day one and support a style of game that I love, or wait for the inevitable sales with the game seemingly on it's way to being a bomba? I'm not sure... :/

And why is ACG's carrying the most weight? Not knocking you, just curious.

ACG's given reason is kinda headscratcher though, basically the combat is not survival horror enough and bosses being killable by your arsenal is an immersion-breaker.

Just a trusted source for me when it comes to reviews, that's all. Ongoing bit of bias.

That said, I don't exactly let reviews fall completely into place as my pre-impression of a game.

Case in point in response to Renekton: I don't know if I consider it a headscratcher or just a similar point that comes up when it comes to action-leaned survival horror games. It's not something I agree with, but it's something I see commonly said with these types of games post-RE4, most notably with the first two Dead Space games and RE5, all of which I enjoyed. Aside from Dead Space surprising me with what I felt was really well-held atmosphere at the time, my feelings coming out of RE4 weren't that I was necessarily looking for held immersion factor with these types of games. I want the tension and the sweet payoff from occasionally responding to that tension with a bombastic arsenal, and I kind of want the wink-wink factor that comes from the main character cracking one-liners, which it seems like Castellanos definitely does a few times in this game.

Still, the first game kinda rubbed me the wrong way solely on its technical issues -- it really prevented the game from feeling snappy and responsive to my inputs in many cases, a far cry from how I felt other genre peers felt before it. That was where I lost interest in the first game, not necessarily in the tough-to-read story or the elevated/more strict difficulty above its peers. Seems this game can maintain a rock solid performance profile, and isn't overly reliant on knowledge of the first game to understand (perhaps by design, even) and appreciate according to the OT.

:) I do look forward to this eventually, and despite my citing ACG as the most heavily weighed review so far, it isn't necessarily broad stroking my entire perception of the game before I get to play it.

What's a Dino Crisis?

I actually didn't know Mikami directed the first one. Jesus Christ, this guy is a legend.

Tough crowd, were you guys really expecting higher than a mainly 8s, a few 7s and the occasional 9? It's pretty much exactly what I was expecting.

The way you phrase it make it look stupid but it makes perfect sense. Is not that the combat is not survival horror enough, is that as he explained there's no tension to it because it doesn't need any preparation and it doesn't feel tense, the way I understand it feels more RE4 than survival horror.

He also made a point on the game feeling different games stitched together.

I was expecting all that but it surprised me that he gave a wait for sale closer to a deep sale than a buy considering how the video went.

Still hyped tho, the fact that is not a full fledged survival horror is a plus in my book, otherwise I simply couldn't play it but I see how for some people that's going to be a disappointment.

I remember when The Evil Within got really high scores and set the world on fire to build a great fansbase... oh wait... you fell in love with a game that reviewed not so well, that should be enough for people to ignore review scores for the sequel because it's obvious you enjoyed a game reviewers didn't in the past.

im making zero sense...

Those mention of an open-world really concern me, otherwise it sounds great. I actually like the fact that they seem to be aiming closer to RE4.

Lol is this that 1-8.5 review garbage mentality that people were talking about?

More like they did a quick glance and saw a few 7's and said "Ok,i'll pass".
This is normal when a game was never on your radar to begin with and you just decide to lurk a little in the review thread.
You scroll down pretty fast and if you see 9 and 10s the game pick ups your attention, otherwise you write a random comment and leave.

Not trying to be a Mod here. But do shit talk like this perfectly normal in neogaf nowadays?

How is that shit talk? Seriously people get a grip for god's sake.

The explanation might be missing but it's fine to expected higher rates, it's sitting at 79 right now on OC and it's fine to pass up until sale.

So many feelings hurt with so little.

Yeah, this was the main thing I was concerned about as well. It doesn't sound like it turned out well so far. :/

Any particular reason why the very same critics couldn't appreciate the original title? So good to see the sequel has delivered!

It seems like the biggest difference is the clearer story telling and world set up. Maybe the reviewers feel more readily invested in the plot and more stable in an environment and it's making a difference?

Any review mention how long this game is? I'd really like to play it but I'm trying to finish Divinity: OS2 and the new Metroid before Mario drops so the leaner the better.

From what I've seen, "open world" is kind of a stretch. It's just a hub. It's suffering from the same thing Nier Automata did, though in that case it was S-E's own fault for marketing it that way.
