The first Pacific Rim film filled our hearts with kaijus, Jaegers, giant swords, and joy in 2013. Pacific Rim Uprising will continue the story in March 2018. Set 10 years after the events of the initial installment, Uprising is poised to expand the world we just started to explore. But, it could also expand the Pacific Rim universe in a big kaiju-sized way.

Nerdist followed up with the film’s director and writer Steven S. DeKnight about a comment he made on a panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC). He mentioned the Pacific Rim “franchise.” It turns out, as Erika Ishii learned, DeKnight meant more than only a third movie. If they receive enough support Pacific Rim Uprising, they can move forward with the next film, yes, but also stories in other mediums.

DeKnight specifically mentioned, “The plan was always to use this movie as a launching pad.” He wants to expand the universe a la Star Wars or Star Trek. That could mean more comics, novels, or even an animated television series. Since the possibility of a Pacific Rim cartoon was rumored to be on the table when Guillermo del Toro was on board, I hope it could still happen. We could all use a little more kaiju action in our lives, don’t you think?

Look, I'm the biggest PR fan, so I'm fine if by "cinematic universe" they just mean a successful franchise. I don't want any spin-off movies like Star Wars is doing these days (heck, I'm still mixed on if I want those for Star Wars), but I'll eat up any comics, animated shows, or video games they throw my way.

Hell if it was good it could have brought in a whole new audience that would be waiting for this film. Its not that easy obviously but seems like there was a lot of wasted opportunity with the Pacific Rim IP.

It mentions comics/novels etc which I think is fair enough as most huge movies have spin offs in one way or another.

That's what del Toro was trying right after the first was released but setbacks and delays eventually lead into this.

I'm just glad they're not having a crossover with the Godzilla movies (yet) because it wouldn't fit at all unless they had a comedic approach.

TBF Pacific Rim had horrible marketing. Right when the BO numbers came out, everybody was afraid the Godzilla reboot was gonna bomb because of the same thing.

They should just introduce the jeagers in whatever the Godzillaverse is called. No explanation needed other than humans just naturally develloped the technology. It would make for a nice follow-up to Kong vs. Godzilla, if we ever get that far.

How many cinematic universes have actually been launched successfully? Is it just marvel at this point? It's silly because marvel is based on comics where there is already a large shared universe. It doesn't make sense for a movie like this. Why not just plan sequels if it's a success?

Edit: the first trailer for this movie already makes me think it's going to underperform. It's going to end up just like all the other attempts at a cinematic universe.

I like the wording "enough support". Basically if this does huge numbers then of course they'll try and expand the franchise.

But I seriously doubt this film gets anywhere near the numbers needed for this thing to turn a profit never mind spawn a whole cinematic universe.

This was never a thing, just fanboy speculation.

Monsterverse is with Warners.

Pacific Rim is now with Universal after WB literally rejected their option on the sequel.

There is no connective tissue between the two and never has been.

Good luck. I was pretty bummed by the trailer, seemed to loose a lot of the Del Toro flair in the sequel and comes off a little...bland. I really hope Im totally off base though.
