You can get unlimited Shadow of War loot boxes on PC with cheats

Not really; all of this stuff is single player, as far as I understand.
It's less like getting Street Fighter V fight money with cheats to unlock characters that you can buy with real money, and more like cheating to get an infinite amount of coins for Smash Bros. Brawl's coin launcher mini game.

I'm pretty sure you can buy LotR's loot boxes with real money (or via an ingame currency you can buy with real money). So it would actually be exactly like SF5.

Someone help me out here... these are just for the boxes that can only be bought with in game currency, right? And this in game currency can't be purchased with real world money, correct?

If so, then, how's this different from applying a mod? I don't get what everyone is so giddy about?

The lifetime subscription is actually decent value. Cheathappens doesn't have just simple cheats: there are cheats that take a great deal of reverse enginering to achieve. Paying for a service where you get a shitload of those, as well as having trainers constantly updated (instead of being abandoned like free ones) definitely has its value.
Amen. Been with them for years now and always appreciate how quick their trainers are updated.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.

Shitting on Shadow of War loot boxes is the cool thing at the moment.

Dont you wanna be cool?

I thought it was a separate lootbox and currency. So currency X (the one that you can cheat to get) can open lootbox X, and it's only available in-game, while currency Y (which you buy with real money) can open lootbox Y.

It's your game on your computer. IMO you should be able to do whatever the heck you want with it (as long as you're not making copies and sharing them with someone else.)

Wait, so can you or can you not pay actual money for these particular loot boxes? I mean them being available offline kind of answers the question. In that case... what are some people even celebrating here?

Yup, that's definitely what it's about. Looking cool. Nothing at all to do with publishers using predatory tactics to encourage gambling by introducing p2w systems into single player games. Jesus.

Yeah just the free one. The currency of which you have mountains of anyway.

Same currency is used for upgrading stuff too.

Just regular cheating, great if you're into that I guess.

Thanks! Well, then, rock on.

Just weird seeing so many avatars of people saying they'd never buy a game with loot boxes and talking with such passion about how they're "gambling" and evil in here trying to get a grip on drop rates and trying to uncover ways of getting more of them in game.

I'm just confused.

Good old piracy.

How many boxes have you bought with real money?

It's ok, you can be honest, were all friends here.

If they put all the items behind lootboxes in a normal in game store/vendor then people wouldn't have to bother to do stuff like this.

My immediately animal brain reaction is "Hah! Gonna buy it now and do this just to spite them!" then I realize the end I would be giving them a sale they wouldn't have got before.

Good that you realized that lol

I guess? But these can be bought with in game currency which, by all accounts, the player is swimming in though normal gameplay. What's the point?

It's only a matter of time before some people start thinking that buying a game and then playing them without ever buying a lootbox with real money (even if they don't use cheats to get boxes) is piracy.

I thought the consensus in unlocking on disc DLC with cheats and modding in micro transaction features was illegal.
Should probably be the same case if you’re using cheats to get loot boxes, though it sounds like it’s only to get in game currency which is perfectly fine

It might be the difference between "swimming in" currency and having unlimited currency. That might rebalance the odds such that the rarest drops in the silver crates become trivial and the gold crates hold no value.

I can't imagine it'll make a big dent to WB, but maybe it'll prick up their ears in a positive way.

Yeah? What was that?

This would piss me off if I was getting it on PC. The endgame sounds like the best part.

Can understand why people are happy that karma is biting WB in the ass though.

Injustice 2. They made the premium currency save sade Instead of server so anyone using a save editor like save wizard could give themselves unlimited crystals or whatever they were called.

Now we can all show WB that their decisions about MTs are wrong by buying the game anyways and still financially supporting them, while feeling like we are actually getting back at them by using cheat engine.

Anyone making a distinction between "free" loot box and paid (silver/gold or whatever it is), what about a game like NBA 2K18 where you can buy these

Opinions on using cheats to get unlimited gold coins?

Is the above piracy?

Remember it's not Piracy, because the the contents in a lootbox aren't worth anything and can't be resold, which is why lootboxes arent't gambling apparently.

;)

Actually quite the opposite, assuming you mean piracy is stealing. ESRB says that the stuff they give you HAS VALUE. Hence why its not gambling. May not be what you want but it has value so yes you are stealing SOMETHING. You being able to resell does not mean anything. Saying all that, I don't care. This is weird world we are living in. Probably why I don't understand bitcoins and why they have value.

On one hand I'm laughing at the fact that this is happening on the other the industry will respond by forcing always online connections on games with their own lootbox economies.
So really this is only going to get more stupid down the line.

Can you earn this currency in game?

I wouldn't call it piracy, but it's definitely a grey area that is clearly against the T&C's. You'd definitely deserve to be banned/face repercussions if you did that.

This would be like giving yourself an infinite amount of SFV fight money, so you can buy all the characters and other content that can be bought with that/optionally with real money.

Yeah, you can.

Welcome to gaming now though where many games are offering you virtual currency in exchange for real money to be able to level up/unlock content faster. Hence some of the debates in this topic about it now being called piracy, when it was once just called cheating.

If you obtain something for free which isn't free, it is piracy. Yes. It's not difficult to grasp.

But can't you technically earn the contents of these loot boxes for free?

Which means this isn't piracy, right?

Same with NBA 2K18.

If you charge money for something that ought to be free such as the shit they dole out in these loot boxes, its not piracy and should be fought viciously.

I understand that belief, I'm just trying to see how people who know what cheating is, try to come to grips with now calling it piracy. What is the line they draw to distinguish someone cheating, from someone stealing?

It's the publishers and developers that essentially scrubbed cheat codes from any games that had them, and then monetized booster packs/currency/speed up schemes. As you can pay for all of these in many games, when do some start calling it piracy?

I would imagine at worst WB would just ban you from the online service. It's a primarily single player game, who gives a crap if you give yourself a thousand loot boxes.

But the currency is free.
When we're talking about cheat codes, which used to be free and many now say they've turned into purchasable boosts or loot boxes, they're not free. This game in particular is a bit muddier, definitely.

Well, if you purchase the game and immediately use cheat engine to get unlimited loot boxes, without cheating that would be only possible if you had first bought in-game currency with real money. Otherwise using cheat engine wouldn't even make much sense, since the game is apparently throwing in-game currency at you left and right. It's an interesting conversation for sure. 🤷*♂️

I feel old. I remember when cheats were just a cool part of many games to unlock everything and play how you wanted. Now it's often accompanied by a bunch of talk of legality and ToS lol.

The argument of how "easy" a game is, or how easily you can grind is irrelevant to an end users wish to use cheats. Historically, people have done it to dick around too, not just to be overpowered. I said earlier in another topic I sometimes cheat in Football Manager with money gains/player editing and so on. I don't do it in my "serious saves", but for my own enjoyment I sometimes like to "turn on God mode".

If more and more games start selling currency/crystals and other booster packs, how will single player cheating be viewed? (multiplayer cheating has always been frowned upon). Going to a claim of piracy is a strong move, as piracy suggests you could have a copyright strike/legal strike against you as a citizen if you were caught using... a cheat engine.

While the above might be musings mostly for PC owners, there are "ethical debates" around Amiibos and card readers/NFC tags. Not quite sure I've seen people say its full-on piracy to use printed NFC tags to unlock Amiibo exclusive content. I mean, you could just borrow a friends Amiibo that you don't own and scan it in, then save your game once Epona is unlocked in Zelda. You still spent nothing there, when Nintendo obviously want you buying their Amiibos to get the content. Not quite the basis for this topic, but more food for thought about people getting content that can be gated behind paywalls. Some of the Amiibo content does too say "earnable in game". Epona is just one example of a bit of content you truly cannot get in-game unless you have the Amiibo scanned in. Same goes for the Wolf IIRC, but I don't have the Wolf Amiibo (I do have the one needed for Epona and scanned it in myself).

It is already a settled debate though. The ESRB and the industry as a whole don't see loot chests or items in the games as having real value. Thus someone finding a way to duplicate loot chests or currency are not committing any sort of crime. What you will answer to is being locked out of the online portion of the game as you are violating their online terms but that isn't a crime.

That’s it. I’m getting a gaming PC for the holidays. I’ll be damn curious to see what can be done in Destiny 2 PC.
