Assassin's Creed: Origins - Hype Check

I'm interested in the game, but hyped...no. I'm staying cautious and I'll wait for reviews and player impressions first. The last two AC's that I played I wasn't a big fan of and Unity I didn't even finish. (Which is very rare for me, because if I pay 60-70€ for a game I finish it.)
What also makes me wary is the fact that no footage of any other console than the Xbox One X was shown so far. I realize they have a marketing deal, but no footage of the other versions at all, even shortly before release? :/ The X won't even be available when the game releases...

Isnt that odd tho. It happens with every game and if Sony or MS has a deal in the future you always will see the Pro or X version in pre release stuff.

So, genuine question-what is truly different this time around? I have watched some vids and other than the RPG-lite stuff, that is now required for every Ubi game, I haven't seen the hook for this AC game.
You could do this thing called googling, reading and/or watching videos.

Going to be the same old same old. Ubisoft is unproven.
It's 2017. Discourse around this studio needs to be better. Like.....your hot take is so 2014 it hurts.

Fascinating.

AC is such a polarizing franchise. Everything you mentioned about Syndicate I hated lol. I rank Syndicate below AC3 and Unity.

I'm the opposite. AC3 was a big disappointment for me and Unity left a bad taste in my mouth and really made me consider taking a step back from the series. I really enjoyed Syndicate and the overall product, more than AC3 and Unity.

Is it really like that? So far I wasn't aware of a multi platform game where only one version was ever shown before release. That only a version was ever shown that won't even be available at release is also new.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
3/10. Looks like most of the same systems with some changes towards exploration.

My general approach for anything Ubisoft-tier.

I used to flat out adore Assassin's Creed and bought every iteration up until 3. Which ultimately, I could not even finish and fucked me up royally on what I thought about the series going forward. Redbox'd the Unity and Syndicate ones thinking it could be something different, and while I genuinely enjoyed the mechanics, the combat; the main pillar that interests me about a game wasn't as honed and versatile as AC3. And the core function was just more of the same. Nothing was overhauled or changed.

Therefore, Origins its strictly a "wait and see" for me.

Do some research and tell me what looks like the same systems specifically. Actually name examples of what are the same systems.

I already pre-ordered so Im pretty excited. Also pre-ordered Mario but honestly I think Ill try this out first.

It's going to be interesting seeing the jump from S to X as I'm picking it up on release. On the other hand, the Black Flag team has proven themselves to me.

You were so keen to reply with an arsey response you must have not noticed what I'd written. I've watched videos and some of the "what's new" articles. I wasn't drive-by shitposting and actually wanted to engage in discussion.

But never mind, it's my fault, I'm too lazy.

I pre-ordered the base version of the game earlier today (along with Wolfenstein 2) and would have pre-ordered the gold version but I have no interest in the steel case.

As for the game itself, I have been getting more and more interested in ACO over the last two weeks while watching youtube videos from centerstrain. Will be playing on PS4 Pro and im expecting 1800P/30FPS or 4K CBR/30FPS. Either way, im good.

In a lot of ways, looks like the AC version of The Witcher III. If the story and characters can be at least good along with the present day and the quests are all solid, this should be an excellent game. Still wish there was a mini-map in the game and miss searching bodies for loot. Other than that, my main concern is in regards to outposts and forts. I'm hoping that once you clear them of enemies, they stay cleared. Hate when the enemies respawn in areas you already cleared out.

The only game I had no problem with that was Horizon because it was mechs and story wise, it made perfect sense for them to completely respawn but when it has to do with human enemies, I hate it. Once I kill them, they're dead and should be gone. At the very least, im hoping for a "respawn on/off" option like Far Cry 3/4 had in regards to clearing outposts.

Other than that, im looking forward to playing ACO since it's been two years since I played and completed Syndicate.

Didnt read/watch anything.

Look at you two.

It's adorable you think people are going to research or look at something instead of maybe just seeing the one demo at E3 and delivering their hot take which has been cold since it's a take from 2014.

Bless the both of you.

Looks like a fresh reinvention of the series. I would definitely be playing it if it wasn't for Mario Odyssey coming out on the same day.

I'm hyped, but I'm not sure it's in my budget.

I'm also still actually catching up on my AC backlog a bit and since the pre-order bonus is pretty lame, I might just wait a bit.

11/10 for me, everything in this game look real good and hope this get GOTY in some branch. but at least action adventure game GOTY will be inevitable Zelda this year despite anything happened to be close call except this is so exceptional. I feel so bad for the team in advance. :p

Many friend of mine consider to Day 1 this despite they never play any of AC is very good sign.

There is a lot of stuff, and going in depth would take some time.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/4/...ancient-egypt-hands-on-open-world-exploration

Just an example of an article not directly listing whats new, but explaining a play session.

But to further simplify it AC is now like The Witcher structurally.

But I will say this. All the things ACO is doing is new to AC, but most of it is not new in games in general.

Which is why a lot of comments are saying "Oh, this looks the same", because they might have experienced these things in other games, but not in AC.

Because my assumption is these people never played the last couple of AC's or are doing a hot take because the base of the game which is sneaking, climbing and stabbing is retained.

If this was some isolated region like Far Cry 2, I’d agree

But this is in ancient Egypt and you’re fighting forces of the Roman army or Egyptian pharaohs or whatnot. Why wouldn’t new forces move into bases/outposts? They have the manpower of entire empires. Of course they have reinforcements

Pre-ordered it even though I have exams around that time and won't be able to play much anyway. So 11/10 hype for me. 😂

I'll check it out when it drops in price, but I have zero "hype" for this game.

The game doesn't look like anything I want from Assassin's Creed, it could be good in its own right, I'm just in no rush to try another Franchise Frankenstein from that studio. The parts of Black Flag which actually played like Assassin's Creed were by far the worst in the series, so it would be foolish to jump in on this based on the strength of Black Flag's ship gameplay.

Even though I am optimistic about the game, I do have some doubts.

First being the sheer amount of gameplay videos that just show the basic activity of killing everyone and capturing a fort/camp.

I think this is also another reason people complain that "it's more of the same" because base clearing is not a new concept, especially to ubisoft. There is nothing inherently wrong with the concept, but we've just seen it so much in open world games in general that a fatigue is there. MGSV kinda aleviated this since there are a ton of gimmicks to use and the game felt so good. With AC, it doesn't look as solid and there is this level of jankiness to it all.

Another issue I have is how some of these side missions look. I am not expecting Witcher quality writing from AC. Honestly the last good story the series had was in BF, and the writer of that isn't working on ACO (although he does support the guy writting it). But a lot of these side quests seem like boring fetch questy stuff. With examples being "oh, my friends were killed by hippos and this guy got kidnapped by bandits".

Watching videos of these things, these quests just kinda end or resolve with them asking for more stuff. I know it's probably not fair to judge the whole game based on these things, but its concerning.

I enjoy doing side quests in Open World games first, and if they are bad like in Horizon with completely uninteresting writing then I just stop caring. (TBH, I think Horizon's story in general is super boring).

So these are my biggest concerns going in. I hope I'm wrong, but as of now I can't help but feel what I've seen will prob only review in the low to mid 80's or high 70's.

This game releases two weeks from tomorrow on October 27th. That day will also see the release of Super Mario Odyssey and Wolfenstein II. It feels as if GAF is on board with this AC installment. The setting, the loot, the RPG mechanics, the combat...everything seems to be clicking the hype button for a lot of people.

I for one am insanely stoked to pick this up. Who else is hotly anticipating this?

Black Flag was my absolute favorite game of the series. I really loved the ship battles. I heard ships will be back in this one so I'm certainly keeping an eye out for it.

I just don't know how you could listen let alone watch all of what they've talked about in terms of what's new. It's a genuine question but it has such an obvious answer that I think people would genuinely have a harder time talking about things that're are the same in-depth because the changes are both large and small both on the surface and what's going on underneath. Like:
-You have an entirely combat system that's wearing the witcher/dark souls influence on it's sleeve along with some new things like a focus on combos.

-On top of that, you have a universal climbing system that not only makes the world a hell of a lot more explorable but also allowed the level designers to not have to worry about making video gamey levels and rather make a push towards even more natural geometry which is saying something since this is AC. It's claim to fame IS natural geometry but this allows them to even avoid stuff like conspicuously placed cracks on the side of mountains.

-The entire gameplay sandbox is dictated by stats, from your level, to your armor, to the level of your weapons, right down to it affecting stealth if you aren't dedicating enough time to upgrading that component.

-There's a huge push towards exploration right down to removing the minimap and having a compass instead along with the complete elimination of floating collectibles.

Like that's just the surface of changes they've made with Origins. Without touching on the completely systemic AI/schedules for npcs or the mission system being replaced with quests. Like, what's the same?

No hype at all here, but I'm interested. I used to love the series (1 and the Ezio trilogy) but 3, 4 and Unity were enough for me to back away from it.

GAF doesn't have a very large AC fanbase. Just wanna explore this world.

And just the QoL features made to the gameplay make it incredibly exciting for me let alone the overhauls.

Let’s hope if the stealth and combat are good they actually carry the improvements over to the next game. Something tells me it will all be scrapped and “improved” again because the next game will be made by an entirely different studio :-(

On topic the game looks great but I will be balls deep in Odyssey for a month at least so I’ll pick Origins up in the usual Amazon UK Xmas sale for £24:99.

Wasn't that hyped until I came into this thread and saw a gif of the main character walking through sand dunes up to a fucking pyramid.

*Goes to watch endless AC Origins gameplay videos*

In all seriousness, I haven't watched many gameplay vids of this at all. I was hyped at the beginning because of the setting, but a lot of the early stuff they showed off didn't particularly draw me in.

The only thing an AC game can do to get me to have a Day One purchase or even a pre-order(I don't do it at all for games really) is if they brought it to Feudal Japan and finally brought in some fucking ninjas. And not like AC's version of ninjas with a bunch of heavy garb and weaponry. I'm talking slick, blacked-out, fast-paced, nimble, anime-inspired action type of ninja.

Hype levels surprisingly high. Not sure if its the setting or the BF team, but I'm buying this game for sure and I can't wait to play it.

Sure would love some Pro enhancements info though.

I know you are very... invested in all things Ubisoft, but I've already checked out the videos and I didn't see anything mindblowing or game changing.

Read my post above. Again, instead of asking "What's new?" The more appropriate question would be, "What's not new or changed?" The latter is a much harder question to answer than the former, especially when the discourse goes beyond simple phrases like "There's parkour. And an open world."

I know you are very... invested in all things Ubisoft, but I've already checked out the videos and I didn't see anything mindblowing or game changing.
Well, for one, there's a completely overhauled combat system that actually makes weapon choice mean something, and drops the Arkham-lite style from the last 5+ games for one influenced by Witcher and Souls, focused on light/heavy attacks, hitboxes, parries, dodges, reach and speed, and so on.

There's also a large focus on a more dynamic world, with guards and civilians have daily routines, sleeping at night, and quests found throughout the world while exploring, and a more active ecosystem

Thanks, I'll have a look through now. I stopped at Unity so know the mechanics...and without the sneaky stabbing it wouldn't be AC, so I'm fine with that.

This is the problem with a long-running series...need to reinvent yourself enough to bring people back, whilst keeping the identity of the series that made people buy the games in the first place.
