The Evil Within 2 PC performance thread

You have pretty much my same specs, but I couldn't get hit 60 at any setting, even tried Medium, but was still trapped in 30-40 FPS purgatory

Turned off all blur, v-sync, and CA too

What are you using to measure FPS?

Also when I first was like wow I figured it out I had disabled AA, but then I re-enabled and nothing changed except the less jaggies here and there.

Edit: Borderless is huge I think.

Everything set to high, getting an almost locked 60fps. If there's stuttering, I'm not really noticing it. Runs like a dream

Played 4 hours last night with no big problems, today everytime i try to exit the safehouse my game crashes...why

It's getting worse, can't even press "Continue" and my game crashes...

While I don't doubt there's some funky stuff going on with this port/engine that's keeping it from holding a locked 60, locking it at 30 has been a pretty smooth experience on a modest rig with 5 hours under my belt. I've certainly experienced strange framepacing issues and loading bugs locking id tech games at 30 in the past (Dishonored 2 was a rough time), but I can't say any of those issues have popped up here. Hope they can iron out how the game's balancing GPU/CPU utilization soon enough.

Damn, the game is quite demanding. I might play this one at a locked 30fps, if it runs smooth. Strange to see the 1070 performing worse than the 980Ti.

Not strange at all. 1070 and 980Ti are trading blows all the time. In some games 1070 takes the lead, while in others 980Ti is faster.

You need a 1080 ti to get 60fps at 1440p?
I was thinking of buying the game today, but I'm very disapointed in seeing this performance. Didn't they move to Unreal Engine 4? Or are they still using the TEW 1 engine?

Running at 1440p (all on ultra + reshsde) with 1080 non ti and 7700k and frames hover around 65-80 frames. It works very well. Some small stutters when loading new assets but nothing major.

I am happy with the performance on my potato, expecting at least console-level, but these results for higher-end hardware on higher resolutions/settings are very disappointing...

Yes! After a bit of tweaking I'm closer to seeing 60 FPS if I stand motionless staring at the floor or ceiling of an interior. I have to sit a few meters away but I'm proud of the results:

mng521N.gif

2600k
1060 6GB
16GB RAM

Res:postage Stamp
Settings: Pre-Alpha
Framerate: 48-50 average

This port is a mess.

The engine is a hybrid of id tech 5 and 6. UE4 would have been nice.

Do the console versions run better given their hardware? Do we need way more than should be the case, to math console performance with this game?

Ultra settings with FXAA and Shadows set to high

Running on a 1440p GSync monitor and seeing 60-80 fps. No issues, and the stuttering seems nearly nonexistent on this setup.

Switching between medium and ultra at 4k seems to have no effect on the framerate at all.. It goes up slightly on low

After updating drivers it hovers around 40 most of the time, I'll settle for that

I'm just using the Steam FPS counter, but it appears to be accurate

When a game drops to the 30s/40s on my G-Sync monitor, it feels like complete sludge. I don't mind 30 FPS on console at all, but it's unplayable on PC.

Maybe Borderless would make a difference? I was playing on Fullscreen

So I decided to go with a locked 30fps. Everything maxed out at 1440p with a 980Ti. It runs very smooth, no judder or frame pacing issues. But there are some hiccups (frame drops) when loading new areas. Still, it's a good experience at 30fps. This type of game is very playable at 30.

Ok, so anybody here with a ryzen 5 1600 and GTX 1080 ? My monitor is gsync 1440p.

Anyway I can play this on 1440p with at least 60 fps? I don't know if I buy it now or wait. Will only buy now if I can reach the above Target

I've decided against buying the game until they fix the port it seems. I can brute force for 60 fps since I have a 1080 Ti, but those GPU usage indicators are a no no
Voting with my wallet on this one. They learned nothing since TEW 1

30 FPS is the same on PC*. Are you using a mouse? A low framerate feels much worse when playing with a mouse vs a controller.

*As long as there are no frame pacing issues.

Well tew ran worse with black borders etc and this runs a lot better so Id say they have learned a lot.

What an absolute hunk of shit port.

i7-6700k
32GB DDR4 3200 mhz
2x1080 SC

SLI does not work at all. At 4k, everything maxed (AA off) can't get above 25 FPS in the opening scene and yes i'm on newest drivers. Tried turning off CA, Motion Blur, etc and nothing.

I using a controller, but even still it looks like it's running in slow-mo when I set it to 30.

I can play a 30 FPS game on my PS4, which is also plugged into my monitor, and it'll look fine. It seems to be only PC games that share this slow motion at 30 FPS issue for me.

I feel like borderless, plus disabled VSync, plus RTSS for frame limiting is the key. I always use RTSS. I always get more consistent performance. The Motion Blur and CA disable is for looks. The motion blur is terrible.

Anyone else feels like the controls are a bit sluggish? raising the aim sensitivity helps, but it feels like aiming has some dead zone or input lag, with the controller.

So what settings am I looking at with a 680 i5 3.3 and 8gb ram?
I known itll have to be locked at 30fps, but can I at least run it with medium settings?

Based on this thread, it seems like the game is not CPU-intensive?
It seems like the performance is CPU-limited, but the issue is caused by the game under-utilizing the CPU.
This was a problem for the first game as well, but it was fixed in a patch 2 months after launch.
It's disappointing that they have the same problem again with the sequel.

have a Ryzen 5 1600, GTX 1080 and 16 gb RAM,

1440p gives me around 45-55 fps. wasn't terrible, but didn't really like it. I just put it on 1080p with everything high, gives me a solid 60fps.

feels like this game doesn't really work well with Ryzen?

People are having similar problems with i7 and it, so I don't think is ryzen

I have same set up, did you try to reduce the settings to reach 60fps on 1440p?

so i just checked 1440p out in one of the more taxing area's with low, medium, high and ultra.

Ultra = around 50-53fps
High = around 54-55fps
Medium = around 56-57fps
Low = 60fps.

Changing the FOV didn't help at all.

Having issues setting everything up. What would you recommend a user with a 970, i5 4690k @ 4.3, 8gb ram on a gsync 1440p monitor? Not sure what settings to tweak in order to get a solid fps but also not make the game look like complete shit.

I made a short video. Its basically Chapter 2 up through the chase. Definitely some stutter, but 1440/60 none the less. Video is 1080, but I show the settings at the start.

Evil Within 2

Borderless
2560x1440

FOV/FG 65ish

Disabled

VSync
Chromatic Aberration
Camera and Object Motion Blur

Motion Blur Quality Low

Everything else Enabled/High/Ultra

GPU is down around 50% most of the time.

Windows10
6600K@4.3GHz
GTX 1070@1949MHz
16GB DDR4 3000MHz

Using MSI Afterburner/in game for metrics and RTSS for 60fps cap

I need to ditch TAA/FXAA. Can I force better AA. I haven't tried.

Thanks for this, I'll redownload and try these settings myself.
From what I understand, the i5-7600k has slightly more juice than a 6600k, so in theory I should be able to pull off a stable frame-rate too

Do you have a G-Sync monitor?

Can I get stable 30 FPS at 1440p with my GTX 970? If I have to settle for 1080p, I might as well get the PS4 version and hope for a delayed pro patch honestly.

No, I have a 144hz, but running it at 60hz right now.

The CPU juice doesn't seem to matter, neither does GPU for that matter. I never go over 80% usage on either, but I still can't get a super smooth 60fps 100% of the time. In the video you can see the CPU spiking to 30ms momentarily. I bumped my CPU to 4.5GHz, but no real difference.

Definitely, but I would use RTSS and or Nvidia half refresh. Run borderless and disable the in game VSync. Keep motion blur for 30fps.

PC version is $34 with DLC on CD keys. Better option even at 1080p. Then hope for a patch or community fix instead of a Pro Patch. You are never hitting 60fps on Pro.

It's bizarre how the first TEW game performs better than the second one (for me - on my PC). You'd think the dev learned the technical mistakes from the first game and improved/optimized for the second game.

Never experienced the first game pre-patch tho which I assume was really bad too.

how does RTSS or Nvidia half refresh work? i'm using the ingame 30fps option with a 970 at max settings
