Wolfenstein II: The Last Hope

Excuse the title if it seems a little sensationalized. I'm very excited for The New Colossus, but I can't help but feel incredibly anxious about it with the current industry atmosphere. With the push for GAAS, the explosion of loot boxes, the closing of Visceral Games and Bethesda's own backfiring marketing for many of their recent SP games, I can't help but feel Wolf II inherited very high expectations as a loot box free, linear single player game. If Wolf II doesn't sell enough, it accelerates the narrative that SP games are not feasible avenues for games any longer. Releasing on the same day as Mario and Assassin's Creed boggles my mind in an already crowded year, but I really want Wolfenstein II: NC to do well.

How is everyone else feeling about Wolfenstein II in this climate?

If it fails, it won't be the marketing team's fault. The trailers and ads for this game have been awesome.

I sincerely hope it does well.

It will do well because unlike Dishonored 2, Prey, and recently The Evil Within 2, Bethesda is somewhat mitigating their disastrous review policy by giving the game a marketing budget that exceeds the cost of my weekly groceries.

And I think it will also do well critically when the reviews start coming in.

Why Wolfenstein II specifically? As you say, Mario is releasing the same day and Xenoblade 2 is releasing a few weeks after. Didn't we just have the Uncharted spin-off be a success or, well, last year's darling: DOOM? I mean, sure, big picture looks dire but is this about multiplatform AAA SP specifically?

That's definitely not the last hope, not even for Bethesda games.
Arkane is probably asking themselves some serious questions though.

Single player games can still do well, they just have to be exceptional and not average. That's a big ask for some developers.

People have feared the death of single player games ever since multiplayer games got popular in the first place. Wolfenstein 2 certainly is not the last hope (nevermind that you're even mentioning that it's up against another linear SP game in the OP).

Even if It fails, SP Games will live on. They just won't cost and arm and a leg to develop and of the same production standard of today.

I certainly hope it does well. Very upset with how every game is either a multiplayer game or a singleplayer game with lootboxes or lots of DLC.

I am super stoked. TNO was sooo good, plus the current political environment absolutely makes me want to take out some nazis. I've had the pc version pre-ordered for some time, and might get other versions down the line.

It's going to be huge. A ton of people I know are excited about it. I even convinced a few coworkers to pick up The New Order & they loved it.

Plus; who doesn't feel like killing some nazis right now?

Didn't like the first game at all. And lol at no single player games. There are plenty of amazing SP games. I am actually drowning in them. So much hyperbole and panic these days.

On the one hand, Bethesda is on a cold streak when it comes to sales, and Arkane's job listing does suggest that their next game will have an online component. On the other hand, this is the first game since Fallout 4 that Bethesda is bothering to advertise, so if Wolf 2 succeeds, we can point to that. On the third hand, by the time the next round of games from Arkane and Machinegames are ready to ship, they could carve out a potential lucrative niche if they stay the course and release (and advertise) a single player game.

In conclusion: dunno. We'll have a better idea after launch, since we would be able to either rule out or rule in advertising as a factor in Bethesda's recent run of commercial failures.

Oh, and their dumb review policy has got to go.

Well, Mario is different, but Uncharted and Doom has multiplayer, although I never thought that neither of those modes reduced the quality of the game (the Uncharted one is really fun, and the Doom one can be ignored).

I'm guessing Wolfenstein is the last remain of AAA single-player ONLY games, without any kind of online elements (call it lootboxes, leaderboards...). i really hope it does well (at least it has marketing, unline some other Bethesda games)

First-party economics are different. Wolfenstein is the last (currently announced) single-player, non-open-world AAA title from the only third-party publisher still making those games.

Is it? Mario and Xenoblade? God of War and Detroit?

But yeah, I hope it'll do well. I'll do my part.

It's being marketed noticeably better than the other games Bethesda released this year, so I think it'll do fine.

I love Wolfenstein, but releasing it at the same time as Mario and Assassin's Creed means I won't play it before a while.

I liked the first one but didn't find it as amazing as everybody else.
I will definitely get this, but not day 0 as I have other games I want to play first (currently going through Prey)

Apart from that, I'm not feeling it being successful. It's too crowded and bigger shooters are right around the corner. I'm sorry for Bethesda, their output as been nothing short of amazing. It's not them, it's us.

God of War, Yakuza, Biomutant, Darksiders, Detroit, Shadow of the Colossus, Spider-Man (maybe), Vampyr

Nintendo's games

And probably others I'm not remembering at the moment

But those are all exclusives. And Microsoft are kinda pushing themselves away from this model already, it wouldn't be weird if Sony follows them in the following years.

I hope the game sales well. I know it's gonna review great but that doesn't always translate to sales.

Nintendo and Sony games sale by default. Your are gonna have those until the end of time. Third party single player-only games, however, are on a huge decline.

Oh shit do I need to go buy Mafia III??
If you want to experience that part, sure. Not a great game overall tho

I hope they do well.
I found the first one terribly boring both in gameplay and story, so i won't bother with the sequel (at least not until it's very cheap).

But i get why others might enjoy it.

I'm more worried for what Evil Within 2's poor sales might mean for decently budgeted horror games, going forward, to be honest.

I'm buying it at launch, OP.

As for sales... it's launching in an overcrowded month. I honestly don't know. Don't get why they launched The Evil Within 2 as well during this time. Either one of them should have been postponed.
