How the System Shock reboot is changing System Shock - PC Gamer

To build a ruined space station, you have to start with a fresh one. This new selection of concept art from Nightdive Studios' reboot of System Shock presents Citadel Station in the midst of its hostile takeover by rogue AI SHODAN. It's not quite the scuffed and broken station the player will see when they wake up from their coma, but by starting with concepts for a functional space station, Nightdive's artists know where to put the rubble.

"I kind of got this from working on Fallout: New Vegas," says game director Jason Fader. "Start with how things looked pre-war, as far as Fallout context goes, and then after we understand how things started, mess it up."

Of course, System Shock already has levels, but this reboot isn't an exact replica of the Warren Spector-led 1994 shooter which inspired so many immersive sims that came after it, most recently Prey. The spirit of the original's space station remains, but the decks are being rebuilt built for the Unreal Engine with modern design ideas.

"Our level philosophy is essentially to take the original levels and the decks of Shock 1, and assess what still works and what may be too frustrating for players," says Fader, "and basically chisel away or overhaul certain sections so that it basically aligns with player expectations for a modern game today. I mean, we're still going to have labyrinthine and mazelike areas."

An interesting look at the System Shock remake from Nightdive Studios

I was just thinking the other day that we haven't heard much about this in awhile. Glad to see it's still progressing.

Definitely looking forward to this after finishing Prey recently.

This makes me terrified.

I'm not getting any bad vibes per se from what we can see here, but whenever something gets rebooted, history has shown that it generally is a shell of its former self.

When I played System Shock and SS2 I had no idea that they would become so popular. None of my friends had even heard of it, especially the first one. SS2 was largely eclipsed by Half Life and it has always been very special to me.

As much as I've always wanted to see that world revisited in more technologically glittering times, if they mess it up I will wish we'd left it in its sacred tomb.

If the remake isn't your cup of tea you still have the originals. They're not going anywhere.

Still think it's remarkable that Bioshock came about due to rights issues with System Shock, and now that Bioshock is kind of finished, there's two System Shock games in development.

Frankly, a game that "aligns with player expectations for a modern game today" isn't what I had in mind when I backed a System Shock remake on Kickstarter. I hope that just means nice graphics, cloud saves and a sensible control scheme, but it doesn't seem likely..

Should've backed a remaster then.

There's no date set for the reboot's release, but it seems likely that it's a ways off. Fader says that System Shock is currently in pre-production. A playable build has been created, and Nightdive is now working toward building a vertical slice: a complete deck of the space station "that will cover every feature but at a shallow depth." After that, Nightdive will "ramp the team up" and move on to production.

Ugh, I thought this was coming this winter...oh well.

I've never played the System Shock games, but I know their reputation, and I desperately want this game to be as great as they were back in the day. Yes, modernize it here and there, but keep the spirit intact, and as a general rule: don't dumb it down.

I like that some of the guys who worked on New Vegas are working on this. It gives me faith. New Vegas was fantastic.

Dead Space, also- which literally started out as SS3. Now that is dead too, and SS is getting two games. Fucking insane.

This is a case where I'm alright with any concessions made to make it more playable. The original System Shock is incredibly hard to go back to.

Seconded.

A reboot (particularly a faithful reboot like the Kickstarter says) shouldn't imply things like simplified level layouts, quest markers, magic compass, vita chambers or whatever else they may think are 'player expectations for a modern game today'.

But thanks for the driveby.

Very excited for this, one of my most anticipated upcoming games.

It'll be very interesting to see if they can strike the difficult balance between faithfulness and modernization.

The concept art actually looks pretty nice and some of those environments do retain a certain similarity (like the orange, low ceiling, angular Maintenance Deck). It'll be exciting to see how they tackle the labyrinthine halls of Citadel Station in this reboot.

Anyone here remember Bioforge? I loved that game as well as the SS games..

"If you've come for the fork, you'll be sorely disappointed."

The original basically had Vita Chambers in the form of the Reconstruction machines you turned on. I wouldn't like simplified layouts really especially with new graphics being done. It'll be easier not to get lost when the halls don't look so much the same.

It will be interesting to see how this one compares to their original Unity Engine build that they released last year. The Unity Engine version was pretty good, but had some weird performance hiccups (well, not weird... it is Unity) and now they switched over to Unreal Engine 4. Hopefully they release a new demo.

The first original game was really unplayable. I tried the reboot demo and I thought it felt kinda sluggish and killing enemies takes so long and is very hard (since you have to give a hit then run backwards and repeat that many times by avoiding the sudden hits of enemies) which results in an easy gratuitous death. I hope they solve this before release.

I was surprised that System Shock 3 wasn't revealed this year which is directed by Warren Spector (who generally doesn't do sequels of games but rather creates new awesome games each time). I hope they would shift to UE4 like how this game embraced this engine too.

"Our intention is to ship exactly the game that was promised, with as much of the features that were promised as we can, in a timeframe that will get it out as fast as we can. Our expectation is probably Q1 of 2020."
I respect the choice to step back and reevaluate, but really there shouldn't have been a need for that in the first place.

As it stands, this statement doesn't exactly inspire a lot of confidence. If you promise a feature, you deliver it. You don't treat it like a speculative thing that might happen if things go well.

Whatever progress they made when they went to using unreal engine from unity, they should keep it and work with the devs who are (hopefully) doing SS3. I want to see new footage soon.
