Shinobi is an admin. Bishoptl is just a regular poster.

Sort of funny seeing shinobi on there as an admin. After what gaf did to him for liking Mass Effect Andromeda. Would be interesting to go back and look through those topics and see which of those people are over on the new forum now. They EVISCERATED him and basically made him say fuck it and quit the site.

Yeah I am starting to realize that this place wont ever be the same. Its shell of it's self right now and I don't see that getting better. Its a shame because i loved posting here.

If you need a clearer picture, get tweetdeck, follow NESbot_feed and NeoGAFNewThread, and put the two feeds next to each other. The difference if fucking stark.

What type of database did the forum use and what was the forum software? I’m not a software or developer person (I work in one of the lowest tech professions, legal/law) but I think I would be able to put together the SQL queries neededto display PMs if you give me a database structure.

I did check other forums' TOS and my post to Timan told him about other TOS that do not have such a provision.
I asked them to change the language if they did not intend to exploit or modify PMs, and he ignored the suggestion as well.
Uff, that's a hard question to answer. I found some data from the internet archive from 2009 at least.
"Powered by vBulletin® Version 3.8.4"

Didn't you only mentioned reddit though? And about the whole changing TOS part...he IS only a developer, so not the right man to ask about it. I also think he would be getting problems if he was going into the whole thing too deep.

Well modern for me lol

I've only ever used the old gamespot forums, Gametrailers (RIP) and then gaf exclusively for the past 4 or so years so didn't have anything fancy lol.

As you said it's still new and they have setup a request thread so no doubt it'll be feature full soon.

I am and have been part of my fair share of forums over the years (all traditional ones with one exception (which isn't reddit)), so I know about the newer flavors. To be honest, I dislike too many of them, since rather than improving the interaction with the whole forum and overall usability, they bog it down for the sake of making it (look) fancy. It's the same with websites in general, really.

That's true. They'll be some fine-tuning no doubt

All those years, what made GAF the place you like was the community not the owner. When the community migrates somewhere else, this forum remains GAF only in name, an empty shell of its former self... The other site already feels like home, it's like settling down again in the comfort of your living room after moving house.

Let me clarify something.

No one have access to the database servers beside me.

No one is able to read other people PM's

No one is reading other people PM's

The users banned are because of:

  • Requested
  • Account Suicides
  • They deserve a ban.

While I pass the time, I actually took time off from the site during the Bish de-modding fiasco. What happened? Why do some people dislike him now?

He was banning lots of people he didn't like even though they didn't break any rules.

Can you clarify if you have ever run searches for strings in PMs or modified PMs based on scripts?

I posted this in the Off-Topic sticky, but I am reposting it here since it contains comments on the state of NeoGAF.

Now that it has actually happened, I need to state my disagreement with nuking the OT.

I have been here for over a decade. I played a lot of games a decade ago but life quickly became too busy and I naturally became inclined to the OT, though I think I never even looked in OT for a long time. But OT became a home and it was in my bookmarks for years while I stopped visiting gaming.

After creating a thread about hobos dressed as Spider-Man on Hollywood Blvd (which nobody replied to), I knew my "skill" wasn't in creating threads, but I tried to add thoughtful comments to threads I found interesting (I would still like the ability to look at that thread I created so many years ago). I did gradually create a couple of threads, but I spent most of my time commenting and discussing in various OT threads. Deleted. No longer available.

I have often spent an hour or so making a post. My posting style probably changed through the years, the topics I were interested in posting in changed with my interests, or I slowed posting in fruit rumor threads because of professional obligations.

I did not engage in toxic behavior. My one ban was my personal request, and I actually asked to end it early because I was so eager to discuss something and share my insight. I spent hours making that post, which was over 2000 words. Someone replied that they thought it was the post of the year. Deleted. No longer available.

In one of my rare threads created, I explored around Foxconn's campus when the controversy about their workers was near its peak, taking photos of the lives of workers with a bulky SLR. I posted it on NeoGAF and the Verge put it on its front page. Deleted. No longer available.

Many have said that their history is documented on GAF and this was true for me. I posted about working on the Obama campaign, not-so-subtly bragged in PoliGAF in 2008 that a news photo posted of Obama had me in the background. Deleted. No longer available. I talked about working with China worker rights NGOs, the lives of Chinese migrant workers that were my friends, my interest in Apple products, how US law, international law or Chinese law works, how tax concepts work, public transportation, thoughts on life in China, New York, New England, California. Deleted. No longer available.

My life and views over the past decade are heavily documented in that OT. They show my life and "character arc" through this period than anything else out there. Deleted. No longer available.

The posts aren't concentrated in any specific threads that I would want "brought back" for discussion. I just want to look at my thoughts and words through my history. I do not know of any social website that does this with their users' content. Why are we punished for something we did not do?

I think it is very disrespectful to just throw away our content like this and not even allow us to view it. It discourages me from wanting to provide thoughtful and substantive comments if it might be deleted wholescale once again in the future in response to some other controversy.

yeah, particularly given my PMs since Saturday (no fuckery in there, just PoliGAF Discord invites to people who asked first on account of the thread being locked), I can definitely believe this

Never did that.

Thanks for the clarification. I will note that one issue I have is that questions seem to be ignored for a very long time which can lead users to draw the worse conclusions. In other companies, there is always a "rapid response team" approach to quickly address questions and assure users when there is a question, especially if it is an issue about consumer trust.

Wait were accusing mods of privacy invasion etc now ... Like what's changed on that front ? I'm not happy about ot changes but how is this a whole issue now ? Operative word being now

I mean if you were given a permanent discord invite link and they know the link they can just put that link on the banned list and it'd reflect such in your PMs even those you sent before the word/link/phrase was banned.

I’m sorry but this is bullshit. Anyone who can read the DB can read PMs and the fact you would try to pass off such an obvious falsehood is not conducive to restoring trust.

So I'm guessing that guy who posted the stats between GAF and the new boards was deserving of a ban? Is this the new moderation policy?

Reposting in here.

I'll refrain from posting my thoughts about the whole ordeal that's happened over the past few days, but I'll say this:

I've been reading GAF nearly every day for several years now, and despite my name and low post count, I'm not someone's alt account. I've always preferred reading threads instead of participating in them. I've read and followed almost all the drama and scandals on GAF throughout the years, but the way this whole situation has been handled is by far the worst. It's been so bad, that I don't think things could have been handled much worse even if you wanted to intentionally sabotage this website. It's been outrageously bad.

To me though, locking everyone out of old OT is probably the worst mistake. It makes zero sense. People are saying it's for privacy reasons? ...What? This is a public forum that can be viewed by anyone. You shouldn't have any expectations of privacy for what you write. Like with any social media, if you don't want other people to read what you post, or if your worried what you write will come back to bite you in the ass one day... then don't post it. It's not like the OT was full of sensitive information that had been gathered and posted without another person's permission. Doxing has never been tolerated, so any private information like that was always removed by a mod.

If you don't want people reviving a bunch of old threads or just want to start with a fresh OT, you don't have to basically delete everything that was already in there. Just lock all of the old threads and move them into an archive that people can still read and search through. Like others have said, there was a lot of memories and history in those old posts, and to no longer even have access to them is really messed up. Cutting off access to them makes it looks like you have something to hide. Maybe you do, and maybe you don't, I won't make a judgement either way. I'm sure you're smart enough to realize though that even if you are trying to hide something, purging all of that information won't make things go back to how they used to be before the allegations appeared. And if you're not hiding anything, surely you realize how bad this look, right?

There were a lot of old threads that I enjoyed going back through and re-reading. Or reading through them because I had missed it when they were still active and only saw them later because someone had linked to it in a different thread. Not to mention all of the threads that I was still planning on reading when I had the time, or the ones I had bookmarked because they had a bunch of interesting, funny, or useful content in them. So what, now all of that is just gone?

If you really want to start with a fresh slate for the OT, then fine. But don't delete the old one, and make it so you can't even read it. Lock it, and put it in an archive as a reminder to everyone that this is now the past, and not what you want the new OT to look like or to become.

He did it to shift the blame towards the community instead of himself. It makes perfect sense why he did it.

He just continues to fuck this whole thing up to save his own ego.

Thanks for writing that, numble. Regardless of everything else going on, arbitrarily nuking OT is just unforgivable to me.

wow k'od for a few weeks and all this shit happens
morons posting porn, gore, drama queen pageants, a new site, mods gone, farewells and middle fingers

so much stuff in less than a week
but i'm staying

I kinda like this new gaf. Feels less whiny and more chill. Sucks that a few familiar posters I recognize are leaving but oh well I hope they have a great time over at the new site. One thing I did notice while lurking for the past few days was that no one that earned a greyed mark on their name did not deserve it.

I don't think that would be the case even a week ago or hell for most of the time here these last 4/5 years.
It does feel a little bizarre honestly when the usually suspects go on with the same old routines but their counterparts don't end up nuked from existence, that looming red dot sight seems to have been shelved.
Excited for the future and definitely the focused on games and less on things that are meant to rile people up.

Not sure why I keep coming back here myself but at this point I think I’m done as well. The vibe here is just empty.

GAF, thanks for being there and keeping me entertained the past 11 years through my lunch breaks, waiting in lines, just hanging out, or long insomnia nights. I was never a really active poster but I appreciated all of the good discussion.

See ya’ll on the other side. I’ll probably continue my lurking over there but I have to say the excitement over there is infectious.

Well, with regular registration for the other place going live tonight with the same process in place as here, I guess I don't need to hang out to pass on information for those wanting a change. So... I guess that's that then. No account suicide. Just a goodbye.

To everyone staying, all the best. For those moving, see you on the other side. Thanks for the good times, NeoGAF. You were important to me.

That time already? Ah.

Well, it's been fun, Gaf. I haven't been a member here for very long, but I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

I remember my joining like it was yesterday. The NX was just about to be revealed, ending what felt like decades of speculation and arguing. Everything led up to the reveal of what I feel is a truly special console.

All that speculation, as wild as it was, was such fun. Everything since then has been as well. I've rode the launches of titles like BOTW, ARMS, Cuphead, and now Odyssey.

For those who stay: please, enjoy yourselves.
For those who are also leaving: may we meet again.

I shan't commit account suicide. I feel no need to do so. Instead, I simply bid you all farewell and fair days.

Can someone who is on the other site get them to actually post a thread confirming the open registration timeframe (when it actually opens, the likely wait time, does the instant member status last a while so all is non discord users get it to) - on here it's hearsay.

Due to not using discord it feels like I have been left twisting in the wind, and if it has a similar process to gaf I really am not looking forward to possibly waiting ages (weeks, months etc) to get in then getting non full member status for ages (due to being a light poster).

Cheers.

(If this sort of post isn't allowed, please let me know and I'll remove it).
