The Nintendo Switch and it's lack of an achievement/trophy system.

I don't miss trophies on my Switch, but do think Nintendo will implement something, maybe similar or not as involved. My idea was each game has 1 'trophy' simply earned by beating the game (condition would vary for games that cannot be beaten in a traditional sense, rogue games etc). And the trophy itself would be an Avatar to display.

Whelp now I'm thinking I'd want to speed run Odyssey to unlock it.

OK my idea sucks :p

I don't really care for them honestly. They feel like extra work and would ruin the fun for me. However if the Switch did get them, they'd have to be called shines. And earning them would have to be ShineGet

I think achievement hunting can be really fun, but not to the point where I really care if we have them or not.

I rather have them than not though.

A pop up in the corner is distrating. I am happy with no achievements - really they are just another way to get people to collect stuff anyway - many of them are pointless.

God - when I look back at some of them - crashing into police carriages in assasins creed a million times or shooting chickens in tombraider :picard:

Playing the Switch and 3DS is therapy for my achievement addiction. I disabled notifications on PS4, and I am slowly getting better. But it’s so nice to just forget about it when playing Mario.

When Nintendo started the silver coin system in mobile Apps/games I sincerely thought that would be their "achievement system" with digital prizes with 3DS/Switch games, too. For example, complete world 1, get 50 silver coins, get some in-game item, wallpapers or things like that...

I'm a bit disappointed because I think it's a cool way to make people play more or accomplish difficult tasks in exchange of some goods (digital or physical). The "e-penis oh look how many games I completed and how many points I earned" approach of your typical achievement system never interested me so I was hopping they'd implement the coin system like in Miitomo and such... I vaguely remember Iwata promised as much, but who knows what happened since he passed away...

I never really bought the argument that achievements/trophies add replayability (or anything else) to a game.

Anything you can do in-game to earn an achievement/trophy can also be done if they are not available. The achievement/trophy is merely a virtual doggy biscuit - a reward for doing something that someone else wants you to do.

I am not convinced most people care about them. Looking at global stats most people don't even finish single player games let alone go hunting for achievements/trophies.

I don't care for trophies.

(says the person who started a new game on The Witcher 3 to get trophies on her new PSN account)

I wonder how many people in here have seen the
post-game toadette achievement system
in Mario Odyssey.

I'm not big on achievements as a checklist of shit to do with an arbitrary (read: useless) point count applied to it, but the toadette system works for me.
You don't even know it exists until you're done with the main content and already in checklist mode, which means your first playthrough isn't biased toward achievement-hunting behaviour.
On top of that, it gives you power moons, tying what would otherwise be a meaningless to-do list into the game's mechanics and progression with a reward.

I wonder, could this be Nintendo's stance on an achievement system for the switch going forward? I'd be okay with it if developers had to implement their own systems instead of hooking into a platform-level API, it encourages creativity rather than being a low-effort TRC box to check.

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
We're a over a decade into having achievements in games and I still wonder at their existence or that people care about them. I never think about them except when the little box pops up. They're there, they're gone, and I've forgotten them. I don't have a Switch, but I don't think I'd notice their absence.

To do something that someone else wants you to do is the essence of gaming.

I've never done anything in a game that I didn't want to do. Games that are rigged against user creativity and force the developers idea of what's fun are games I don't spend much time with. What sets video games apart from other media is that static media require the producer's creative output to be enjoyed. The best video games are about the user's creative input.

Tell me the idea of Stickers coupled with MiiVerse was not just 20 shades of awesome... c’mon ;).

For those who care I can see those features being awesome. Couldn't have cared less, personally. Hell, I actively disliked Miiverse since I couldn't have a wallpaper thanks to it. I understand the appeal if you're into faux socializing...
