HDR Gaming Thread - PC, 1X, PRO

I wanted to create a thread specifically for our experiences regarding the HDR implementation and presentation in our gaming today.

For me personally it’s s bigger wow factor then the jump from 1080p to 4k, but’s that’s all subjective.

With that out of the way I want to keep this short and sweet. Everyone feel free to post impresssions , top lists, and have a general discussion on HDR/DolbyVision.

I’m going to start off with just a top list of my favorite games out right now that do HDR the best. This isn’t based off gameplay, but again strictly HDR.

1. SW Battlefront 2 - wow, just wow.. 1X
2. Horizon Zero Dawn - PRO
3. Uncharted Lost Legacy - PRO
4. Uncharted 4- PRO
5. Assassins Creed Origins - 1X
6. COD WW2 - 1X - very subtle hdr but makes it very cinematic.

So far those are the games I’ve played.

The absolute most horrendous, garbage implementation of HDR I’ve seen yet .

1. Disneyland Adventures

Has anyone had any success getting HDR to work with Hitman on PC? Everything I've read indicates it should be working for me but in the game it says that I do not have HDR capable hardware.

Specs

7700k
1080ti

Samsung KS9000

High Speed HDMI Cable

I still need to grab gran turismo and forza, I just end up getting bored of racing games within a week or two.

Also a warning, when viewing the actual hdr file on 1x in an activity feed be careful. It’s green screened my 1x 3 Times now that I’ve had to hard reset to fix.

I was really impressed by HDR on those games:

Gran Turismo Sport
Final Fantasy XV
Horizon
Uncharted: Lost Legacy/U4
RE7
Wipeout Omega

I have heard a few people say ww2 doesn’t look good, or where are the Uber hdr graphics?

Cod ww2 runs a very realistic subtle hdr, coupled with a grain filter in campaign , and the game is going for a gritty cinematic presentation.

Obviously compared to a colorful rich alien world it’s not going to wow as much because of its desaturated nature.

I really expect Destiny 2 to be a stand out hdr showpiece and cannot wait for the patch.

Why do people include screenshots in these threads? It's not like people are going to see them in HDR anyway...

For shits and giggles? To imagine what could be? To dream? To say hey look at this shit , now imagaine it in HDR with the lakme act 1 flower duet playing in their heads?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention my 2 current HDR implementations:

Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4 Pro)
Rise of the Tomb Raider (Xbox One X)

A lot of HDR stuff has been underwhelming to me but man, these two titles knock it out of the park imo.

As someone who hasn't been following much of the HDR stuff (other than hearing about how good it is) ...describe to me how this expands on a regular TV without HDR - i'm sure it's something that can can only appreciated seeing it in front of you but i'm curious

Livid colors and better contrast. It also helps providing sense of depth to the image.

I just ordered a KS9000 given that the MU line seems to be a step back due to lacking quantum dot tech. I mostly play on PC. Does anyone know if it's a plug and play experience? I'm currently sporting a 970 of the G1 variety.

It is absolutely not a plug and play experience.
A right royal pain the arse in fact.

When people say HDR on PC... does it mean "PC connected to a TV", or are there real HDR monitors (not those who claim to support HDR signal, but those that actually can output it) that I have missed?

You’ve missed them. Dell and Samsung both have HDR monitors out.

Really? Any tips? Running windows 10,up to date.

Honestly not having much success, but on my B7 for SDR I use (in Nvidia CP change res) 32bit/8bpc/RGB/Full (default entries when Nvidia colour settings are selected) this is how I have my PC day to day, and if I watch HDR content my tv doesn't tag it as HDR, and in Windows 10 display settings, I can't select 'HDR and advanced colours'

If I uncheck Nvidia settings in CP and use default colour settings I get 32bit/10bpc/RGB/Limited. HDR and advanced colour works and my tv sees HDR. I haven't gamed with it yet, but my desktop is washed out and my HDR content doesn't look anything like it does on my mates X1S.

I have messed with the 'output colour format' and the 'colour depth' but, like I said, not going well. Google results are full of wait for MS posts, so I'm not even sure if it works to the same level as the console implementation, and having seen it in action on an X1S and a B6.. I want.

Edit: Yes I'm changing the settings on the tv to match.

I have Samsung KS8000 connected to GTX 1070 via HDMI but with HDR on colors in games are always very faded and washed out. I have tried Hitman, Shadow Warrior 2 and Destiny 2 but all titles look very washed out no matter what settings is use. My PC is connected to Samsung hub in HDMI 1 port and I have tested it with PC, Game Console and HDMI mode with same results.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Have you turned on HDR in windows ? Because the experience I had was that when enabling HDR in windows, I would get poor colors on the desktop, but they seemed fine ingame. But when HDR wasn't activated in windows, everything was fine on the desktop, but when launching games, HDR would turn on but the colors were washed out etc...
But that was with a samsung CHG90 monitor (the super ultrawide one) that I got refunded since (wasn't happy with it), I now use A LG C7 oled tv, but I haven't tried HDR with it because it's an even bigger mess to get HDR to work on it. At this point PC HDR isn't a working feature imo, and i'll wait for it to be properly implemented before I start using it.
As for now, the Pro and the 1X are a far superior HDR experience.

What resolution are you using? HDR is only supported in 1080p and 4K, in Destiny 2 at least.

I just got a HDR 10 Samsung UHD 55", and my God playing games like Assassins Creed Origins or Gran Truism Sport in HDR truly is a sight to behold.

Noticeable mentions: U4, Resogun (?, but looks mighty impressive in 4k), Infamous Second Son. And I am forgetting one or two...

Edit;

Ah yes, forgetting Horizon. Don't like the game much, but those graphics are amazing.

I have a question for you. when i play BF2 on X1X with HDR the picture is bright till i am in the main menu. the HDR slider in the options is ok but the main menu ist dim-ish. then i start a mission. the loading screen gets bright and dark. when its done loading i check the HDR slider options and the pictures are only a grey mess. nothing bright anymore. after MP rounds the menu gets briefly bright and is switching back to the dim-ish look.

I tried a diffrent HDMI cable but its the same so maybe you or someone else have this problem too

Thank you for the tip but tried that already. The desktop settings won´t affect gaming settings.

Yeah only tried 1080p. I still haven´t found anyone that haveHDR in PC gaming working flawlessly. Makes me think why they add HDR support in games if it is so messed up in real life :(

That sounds pretty shitty but not that surprising considering windows started supporting atmos pretty recently. My hype has gone down 2 notches given that my Ps4 is not Pro.

I guess I'll have to settle with Netflix for now.

Anybody here playing Battlefront 2 on the XboneX in 4K/HDR? The cutscenes and menus are totally blown out for me and look really bad. I *think* gameplay is working properly…

Also, the HDR slider in the settings doesn't do anything when I turn it up and down. HDR works fine in other games so I'm wondering if this is a BF2 bug?

Yep, the menus and cutscenes are doing all kinds of funky stuff.

Maybe cutscenes are actually non-HDR video files, but the game is still running in 4K HDR mode with a video overlay? That would do it.

HDR was working flawlessly on PC until Microsoft pushed out the Creators update earlier this year. The 378.92 Nvidia driver was last one that worked for me. Nvidia has stated that the Creators update overrides their HDR API. This is strictly on Microsoft’s end and needs to be fixed. If you google it you’ll find a lot of threads on this subject. 👍🏻

No problems with creation update+last nvidia drivers. Most of games work well with HDR. Only few developers have not updated games for properly HDR support - mass effect andromeda/ shadow warrior 2 hdr is broken. Even Agents of mayhem HDR was fixed with last game update.
