If you liked Dark Souls, and you liked Destiny, you should be playing Let It Die

I don't want to bore you guys with a ton of text. I could spend paragraphs on how this game is free, how there are tons of players who are much farther along than I am who haven't spent a dime on the game, how it blends the stamina-based combat of Dark Souls with the grind of loot-based games like Destiny and even incorporates Metroidvania-like elements with its locked gates and elaborate level layout. But I'll just say that if you like these games, and you haven't even downloaded it, please do. The devs are 400,000 downloads from 4 million, and that would help ensure this under-appreciated gem keeps getting new content. So instead of a wall of text I'll try to entice to join in on the journey with a pictorial homage to my time with the game so far (fyi the game runs at 1440P on the Pro!).

Link to guide for new players: https://www.reddit.com/r/LetItDie/comments/5lx3u9/a_few_tips_for_new_players/

The game starts with an indication of how expendable your characters are:

This is a common early game situation—low on gear, starring at an unfamiliar escalator, wondering where it leads:

You find a few blueprints, collect a bunch of materials, and start gearing up:

Along the way, you develop quite an intimate relationship with the elevator operator:

The early levels can be drab, but that's because you're in the basement. It's when you reach the 20th floor of the Tower that things really start impress:

You'll spend millions on Mushroom Stews trying to get the best Premium Decals:

Once in a while, it pays off:

You'll visit the fabled moving shop. A lot:

You'll even raid other player's bases and steal their fighters (for a little while :p):

You'll hide in the corner hunting Jackals for their gear:

It will be worth it:

Finally you'll make it to the top of the tower:

Remember not to fall:

There's so much more to this game. I haven't even gotten to the new floors or fighting the Forcemen. Maybe it's because it's another of these Japanese gems. They don't seem to make games like this anywhere else. I don't know. But for someone who loves grindy games and has the patience to play them, and loves relentless Souls-style combat and excellent excellent fashionable loot, I'm in for the long haul.

Downloaded and played it myself. I like it myself but just can't afford to spend so much time per game now.

I started it, but I didn't like the idea that the melee attacks were mapped to the triggers, and there were no options to change that.

This game has been heavily discussed on gaf and I believe was possibly in the running for game of the year.

It’s good. I deleted it ages ago because I stopped playing as much and couldn’t justify the HDD space. Anybody play this with remote play? Wondering how it fares

i was going to download it but someone told me that it's P2W, if you die, you need tokens to continue, and Tokens are purchasable

i don't know if this information is true, can someone correct me if i'm wrong ?

You do not need to purchase tokens to continue. How it works is that when you loose a character, you can either go back to the first level and climb all the way to the location of your death to pick up your corpse, or you can use tokens and revive on the spot.

1) If you make sure to have backup "bodies" in your freezer (it will make sense once you jump into the game) you can avoid buying tokens and go the long route instead.

2) The Game also drops revival tokens on very rare occasions (like daily events), and I would recommend you hoard those for high level boss fights, or if you have some blueprints for an awesome new weapon that you do not want to loose.

3) There are also consumables (grilled snails) that act as a one time revive item for the unexpected traps or deaths, and I am sure other veterans of the games will tell you that you probably shouldn't leave the base without them. They are farmable a few hours in the game, right about the point where you get familiar with the game mechanics.

I played Let it Die for 3 months when it released last December, and never bought tokens. Besides, if you aren't properly geared for an area (the damage calcs for damage and defense will make that very clear for you) using a token will not help you because you will get smacked in the face and go back down.

TLDR: This game is a BLAST, don't let the token or microtransaction make you miss out on it!

I LOVED this game, until it became hard, like really hard, somewhere north of the low 20s.

I forget what floor it was, but DAMN, shit gets intense fast.

Great game, totally worth trying.

Does it have decent (if any) character customization? Race, sex, hairstyle, face etc.

There are about 10 dudes and 10 girls to choose from. And fortunately they mostly look great

3 words: Red Hot Iron

I loved Bloodborne, and I am ready to play Ni-oh. But those are complete games, I paid my 30 bucks on them, and I'm fine.

Playing a Soulsborne like with f2p mechanics?

No thanks, I already see the best and most spectacular weapons and armors being paywalled or almost impossible to farm.

I tried but god damn! the amount of currencies and systems...its really discouraging. As soon as your start, the tutorial is so convoluted, and the terms...Heavy metal is a currency is all I remember.
Gameplay isnt bad, but all the f2p systems are too cumbersome to me.

edit: if you liked destiny, try warframe!

What's the combat like. I'm always searching for Bayonetta with skill trees and dialog options. Closest I've come is Dragon's Dogma, Dungeon Fighter Online, and a shut down MMO called Rusty Hearts are the closest I've seen.

Combat is basically a janky version of Souls with some other elements tossed in to spice things up slightly, but certainly nothing overly nuanced. The whole thing kind of reminded me of Souls meets Manhunt which sounds really cool but really doesn't play out all that excitingly or tight in practice.

I dropped the game fairly quickly due to the overwhelming amount of systems, information, grinding and general confusion I felt. I just frankly didn't have the time nor interest to invest and moved on. This was pretty close to its release though, so some of the jank and overly obtuse crap may have been ironed out by now for all I know.

I didn't care for Dark Souls, I HATED Destiny, but thought this looked cool. Should I wait/save my money?

I actually just deleted this off my PS4. My backlog is INSANE, and while the game looked intriguing, I knew I just didn’t have the time to sink into it. Maybe if it had released before I had kids...

I disagree... Maybe at the start, but after some time, the FTP method really kicks in and the game starts to be preeetty unfair. DS can be pretty frustrating, but it's never like this.

Combat is basically a janky version of Souls.

Janky is putting in mildly. It's worse than any Eurojank but it gets a pass cause free and the aesthetics are pretty neat. It starts out fine but there's definitely a wall that you'll hit and the only way to pass is to either break the game or spend money. There's definitely a feeling of accomplishment in being able to take on overpowered characters roaming around but it doesn't last since the strategy is mostly the same.

As far as free games it's not outright terrible but I wouldn't waste more time on it when there's so many better games (both free and not).

Game was fun but each update was ludicrous in size a 20GB game quickly began taking up a quarter of my hard drive and it just had to go.
I could understand if they had been major expansions but when it had vastly been patches the size made the game a no-go.

One of the best experiences I had this gen.
Game starts low but once you got all the mechanics its imposible to stop.
For those saying its P2W, sorry but this is bullshit.
I put less than US15 on the game, and honestly US10 was because I made very wrong choices around a sub boss on late 10s.
Anyway US15 for a game that I put more than a hundread hours is more than fair, specially when I´m sure I could have reached around late stages without putting a cent on it.
Not gonna lie final battle is fuckin brutal.
You gotta be ready.
You gotta have the right gear.
You gotta have shroms.
You gotta have some Tokens ( you can easily acquire them doing sub quests ).
And you gotta be ready to know when to die, because you are going to die.
Still tho this is the trophy that I´m most proud on my PSN profile :

Plus Let it Die Gaf was amazing during first three months after release.
For those willing to give a try all I have to say is : UPGRADE YOUR HOT IRON !

Game could've been a cult classic, but F2P and endless grind hurted it.

I defeated the last boss and visit it from time to time, but the game gets more oppressive with constant nerfs, making it it even more difficult.

I guess part of my point was that for some gamers, the grind is the point.

I would much rather play one game for a year than 12 games in 12 months. But I’ve also read “Lord of the Rings” eleven times.

I saw a lot of people saying all the ways they streamlined Destiny 2 really hurt the long term playability. Grinding for the perfectly rolled sniper or trying to get the Gjally each week was pretty damn addicting.

That’s what I love about LID. Sure, progress is slow. But the stipulation that you have to pay to win to get the best gear is BS. There are tons of people on the LID Subreddit who rock all the Forcemen gear and haven’t paid a dime.

So many games just make it all too easy these days. The feeling of accomplishing in LID when you gather materials and fight off tough hunters (opposing players’ assassins) or haters (corpses of dead players) and finally get to that next Tier with a weapon ... it’s like crack.

I really liked the game, but the thing that made me quit was the mechanic where other players can invade your base and steal your fighters.

They changed this. Your fighters are returned after four hours. And if you buy the monthly pass for $13 or whatever you are insured against all attacks (plus other benefits)

Great game, totally worth trying.

It's around Floor 23/24. I know because I hit that difficulty wall myself. There's a lot more "haters" running around on those floors and almost every enemy can kill you in like two hits out of nowhere, and the boss has an insane amount of HP and does exponentially more dmg than the first time you fight it.

Super Bunnyhop did a video about it earlier this year.

It's a real shame too because I was having a blast with it up until that point, even if the combat isn't quite as tight and responsive as I'd like. But the difficulty hike was so obvious and IMO exploitative, I lost any interest I had in the game. Maybe if the grind weren't so pernicious, but you need so much materials to upgrade weapons and armor and they all break so fast and are so expensive to forge AND you have to wait for a timer on forging anything on top of it. If it was a $60 game without the f2p shit or at least the grind and difficulty ramp weren't so crazy, it'd be in my Top 10 for the year.

Seriously the 20s are no problem if you use the Iron. I made it all the way to 30 with Red Hot Iron +2

Yes there’s a difficulty spike. It’s like getting to Sen’s Fortress which I bet caused many people to uninstall Dark Souls

But the Iron does two things:

1. Enemies in the 20s are weak to blunt. Thus Iron wrecks

2. Iron shreds screamers/haters armor making them easy kills

It's awesome.

But they definitely ramp up nudging you towards spending money every 10 levels you hit.

Tends to be a new environment and new equipment that you need. Your awesomesauce character that killed level 29 can get obliterated at level 30.

And it takes a while to get your new awesomesauce level 30 character up to where you were unless you get the golden elevator.

But let me reiterate... The game is a blast. And hilarious.

I enjoyed the grind up until I got to the high 20s. Then I kinda just soured on it and didn't want to play anymore. I kept it installed and went back to it months later only to realize I didn't like it at all anymore and had lost all motivation to continue.

I spent $5 on that one-time death medal thing in the store and used them to increase my inventory. You really can get far in the game without spending a dime, but just know that it comes at the cost of lots of your time.

Ah, so you finished the tutorial :)

But to be honest, floor 40 is not really end-game. After that there are floor 41-50 where you only meet high level enemies (aka hater)

Then there are also the the forcemen that are much harder than the original 4 bosses.

Not to mention asshole players that sent out fully geared hunter to grief you.

As for P2W, I dont really think so, since paying will not give you the best gears. You still need to grind and hope that rng-sus in smiling on you.

Not gonna apologize for bumping my own thread

Just want to let everyone know there have been a ton of new climbers in the Tower of late and it’s good to see

Gung-ho has made several quality of life changes to make the grind easier including special World of Tanks blueprints dropping right now that make it much easier to get a set of endgame (Tier 4) armor + machine gun

Also the login bonuses are great right now — golden animals everyday, and starting 12/21 the shop dude will be giving out a pair of super-Stamina sunglasses that look cool and are perfect for spamming dodge against all these range haters

Anyways game looks great on the Pro @ 1440p/60 FPS and is FREE TO PLAY ...

Thread makes me itch to return, I admit...

Taking out the first major "Boss" was a game-length effort in itself... I felt I beat the game at that point and stopped playing.

Funny. I started to play again these days and i finding It to be very fun. It's looks like they made the game a bit more pleasant with all those updates. Some stuff back then was way convoluted for no good reason.
