The perfect game?

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
God of war has the best boss battles, Uncharted the best adventures/chapters, and Horizon the best graphics but none of these games has the total package. What do you consider the “perfect” game?

FF7.

I replay it every year to see if it still holds up, and it really does. It is not without flaws, but the package as a whole is really quite something. It saddens me that we will never see its like again.

Whenever someone asks this, the answer that I see that I most agree with is Tetris.

Perfect design, can't think of any ways which it can be improved.

I'd also like to mention Go as a perfect game, but it's not a video game

The perfect game is one that covers literally every genre, has every single feature anyone could ever think of, is available on every single platform ever to exist, and makes everyone happy.

Does such a game exist?

Not saying your opinion is wrong, but I find games like that ultimately too lacking in depth to be the answer. Yes the core mechanics are solid as rock, and the game is universal in that the rules are clear and easily understood by all players, but that is because there is little to understand beyond the most basic concept. It's the same reason I would consider chess an objectively better game than naughts and crosses. Tetris does what it does flawlessly, but it doesn't do much and that is why it can.

Super Monkey Ball 2, it's legit one of those games I always have to go back to once a year and beat Expert and all the hidden levels.

The original PC version of Dungeon Keeper. The only game i don't get tired replaying at least once a year.

Metroid Prime and Dark Souls

No game is "perfect", but for my tastes and off the top of my head, they both just totally deliver everything I want out of a game.

If we would get a Final Fantasy VI remake with Kingdom Hearts art style and graphics (retaining ATB), then that.

Otherwise, the closest one is probably Mega Man X.

There's no such thing.

Several have come very close.
Off the top of my head:
Mario odyssey
BotW
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Horizon
Last of Us
Tekken Tag 2
God of war 2
Secret of mana
Final Fantasy VI

And a bunch more.

Closest to perfect though? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Last of Us, God of War 2, Final Fantasy VI.

It's Super Metroid. I've played thousands of games (really) and I've yet to see one that I just don't have anything bad to say about.

Bloodborne covers all bases for me

I feel like we have this thread come up at least annually.

It comes down to how we define perfection, and for art, games in this case, I don't think it's about being all things to all people - that's "Tetris" perfect - but how well a work executes on what it sets out to do.

Bloodborne is absolutely on that list for me. I'd consider Dark Souls my favorite game of all time, but you have meet the game halfway too often over a very long campaign. Bloodborne is just pitch perfect throuought.

I think Mario Odyssey is an example of a "perfect Mario game", where is does manage to be all things for all people, but it does make me long for other titles at moments like Sunshine, Galaxy, and 3D World. The feeling will pass by the next moon.

Tl;dr : I think perfection is relative to the title first (perfectly executed idea) ,the player experience second (perfect for me), and "perfect for everyone" is a compromise.

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Chrono Trigger

Yep

Also, this has been said a lot before but, in terms of the experience Ocarina of Time. It's not perfect technically, but I believe part of real perfection is having a few flaws and rare lows so you can appreciate the good parts. If the game is 100 % linearly good I wouldn't necessarily consider it perfect. To me at least. If you take everything for granted you're not truly enjoying it, you might mistakenly think you are, but I don't think so.

In accepting that no game has infinite longevity or universal appeal, Super Mario Odyssey / Breath of the Wild are pretty darn close for single-player experiences in my books.

Some very short, precise and crisp games can be considered perfect.

I mean, not universally perfect, that does not exist. But perfect for some. Like I fucking love Alpha Protocol but it is obviously flawed as hell.

Some games like Hotline Miami or Inside have litterally zero flaws in my point of view.

Marathon 2: Durandal has the best dungeon designs
Dark Souls has the best arrangement of dungeons and traps
Mario 64 has the best platforming
Obduction has the best environmental puzzle storytelling
The Last Guardian has the best AI behavior
Lode Runner XBLA has the best realtime puzzle-solving
Destiny 1.0 has the best guns
Dariusburst has the best bullet dodging and combat music
Metroid NES has the best atmospheric music
Super Mario Odyssey has the best sound effects
Doom 2016 has the best multiplayer combat arenas
Thief 2014 has the best stealth mechanics

combibne those all together and you have my perfect game

Games are works of Art so there is no perfect

For me the closest they come is a mix of in the moment thrills, sense of story and scale, and progression to keep me playing

Games that hooked me most in this sense are:
+ Dark Souls (et al)
+ Oblivion
+ Fallout 3
+ Destiny
+ SOCOM II
+ Madden series in the 90s
+ Currently: Let It Die
