Did GTA 5 do well on PC? Any possibility of RDR2?

It just came to mind that RDR never was released on PC, and RDR2 isn`t announced. It looks like not releasing console games on PC has become a thing of the past, but R* still might be doing it. Meanwhile Steam has become huge, and I guess some part of it depents on GTA 5`s success on PC.

Man I hope so.

If not, I think RDR2 will be an Xbox X system seller for a lot of people. I would love a PC version though, but if we don't get one I am def playing on X.

From what I've read, the reason RDR was never ported to PC or remastered for PS4/XB1 is because the code is a mess.

RDR2 will come to PC of course and will most likely get remastered for the PS5/Xbox whatever as well.

At the risk of sounding stupid, if the answer is "of course" then why hasn't it been announced?

Lack of RDR PC was apparently mostly because the engine was a mess to port. No such issue with RDR2 but I would not be surprised if R* is being R* and holding out for the PC version up to a year just so they can sell it twice to people with multiple systems. Worst case is they will hold out until PS5 so they can make an improved version for PS5 and PC.

GTAV is still on the top sellers list for Steam games so I imagine it has sold very well.

Because it will come much later, I assume a year or so.

There's no way they'd waste that double dip money.

Good points.

Damn, I guess the question is will I be strong enough to wait for the PC version for that long...I will probably have to double dip

The wait will be hard but I'm not getting it on consoles this time. I triple dipped on GTAV like an idiot and I'm not doing it again.

Why is the engine for RDR a mess to port on PC when GTA IV, L.A. Noire and GTA V are on PC?

RDR had a very rough development. They had to call THE BENZ to save it.

Yea me too, buying GTA V for the 360 was a huge mistake with that shitty framerate.

Different games. There are years between RDR and V.

Loads of insider rumors detailing RDRs troubled development. Only the benz was capable of turning the ship around.

//edit beaten
what is R* going to do without THE BENZ, RDR2 is going to be interesting indeed.

I suspect GTAV did well everywhere, so I'd expect RDR2 to get released everywhere - unless Microsoft want to pay some huge fee for exclusivity or something.

Rockstar will most likely follow the tactic they've done with GTAV which earned them great praise with Take-Two, in which you spread multiple versions across fiscal years and don't announce it until previous one has passed, this encourages "double dips" and can be used as an excuse to get people to come back to the game in different hardware whilst also discounting console versions at the same time to generate a sales boost across the board.

Best phrase currently in existence. Execs go hit the keg in their break room every time someone drops that bad boy

Yup, I think this also.

LA Noir Code is also a hot mess and they managed to make it work.

Rockstar maybe cant remaster the game because the original coders and team refuse to allow them too.

RDR was development hell and caused big talk about ethically of game crunch.

The people who made that game may not want rockstar to resell their hard work again. Purposely refusing to make RDR happen in a manner that is easy and profitable for Rockstar.

BluePoint games could get it done im sure.

This is false assumption, I was around for both of those games, if you think L.A.Noire was a mess then in comparison RDR was a complete burnt out dumpster fire. As for your comment about coders not wanting Rockstar to sell their work, well that is just laughable if you know how iron clad Rockstar and Take-Two are with ips and work done under them.

Rockstar seems to want to lock down as many copies as they can and piracy is still an issue on the PC. This way they can get consumers to double dip which would erase any potential lost sales. I know that sounds hilarious given how well GTA V sold on the PC but how many of those millions were sold at $60 a pop? Maybe it's just me thinking PC gamers are more frugal when it comes to buying software?

ps4/xbone release 2018, ps5/nextbox/PC remaster some years later

worked brilliantly for GTA5 so i can't really blame them. as absurd as it is a game of this caliber not getting a pc port off the bat this day and age

I think for certain it will be coming on PC, although it wouldn't surprise me if they wait a significant amount of time (3-12 months) while they continue to optimize the game and rinse the console owners for all their worth. The only caveat is that GTA: Online has been such a cash cow for them they may not want to leave all of that money on the table for so long.

So you think they release late so that honest double dipper sales counter pirate losses?

As far as PC gamers being more frugal it's a bit more complicated.

People like to talk about how PC gamers are cheapskates and only buy games on sale, but there have been plenty of AAA games that sold well at full price, even being top sellers on release.

Consoles haven't been known for deep discounts even on digital until more recently. The cheapskates on console buy used or rent and there's really no statistics to track these transactions.

So cheap asses on PC buy on-sale, cheap asses on console rent or buy used. Both communities have cheap fucks.

Except for GTA 1 and 2, I don't think Rockstar has ever done a simultaneous launch for any of their games on PC. The PC versions have always been delayed.

Pretty sure a large portion of those sales were at full price. I think the cheapest the game has ever gone on PC is 50% off. The console versions have already dropped below that numerous times.

Steam sales and Humble Bundle sales have definitely had an impact on consumers willing to wait. There also seems to be more competitive storefronts on the PC.

As far as Rockstar games on the PC there must be a valid reason why they wait so long. Consoles now seem to be so close to PC developement that a year after release stinks of either marketing deals or to what my reasonings are.

A "mess" which was cleaned up "within a few months" in the hands of the right people. This further leads me to believe that R* simply doesn't care about releasing RDR on PC. They had plenty of time to port it later. PC gamer's themselves are partly to blame for this treatment. GTA V sold incredibly well on PC. If the sales are there to be had, why would R* treat us any better? I'd be shocked if RDR2 comes to PC. Even so, releasing it a year or so later and selling well means PC gamer's accept R*'s treatment.

Different teams, different games, I know, but L.A. Noire was ported over to current gen platforms including Switch. Is a game like that supposed to be more lucrative on Switch than RDR on PC? Highly unlikely.

Again speaking as someone who was around during that time, RDR was a royal mess, files were being thrown around right up to gold, if you check it out for yourself you'd see audio and textures outside of archives that were added and changed right up to the end. I wrote a more detailed post on this when I first joined here so check out my post history to see that.

It`s not mentioned here, but RDR didn`t have multiplayer with microtransactions. My guess is that this mode provides too much profit for them to ignore PC this time around.

Yup, I fully expect GTA V is the template of how RDR2 will be handled. Unit sales may never come close to console on a game like this, but there is a lot of money to be made with space bucks among the PC crowd.

Max Payne 3

EDIT: Actually it was delayed a little, but it was a matter of 2 weeks.

It sold like 15 million copies on PC

I'd say that is pretty good

GTA5 has sold 8.5 million copies on Steam alone according to SteamSpy: http://steamspy.com/app/271590

Plus you also have to take into account of the non Steam PC sales numbers.

GTAV is a massive hit for Rockstar on the PC. It still shows up regularly in the Steam top sellers list, and the PC port is now almost four years old? Also, GTA Online has been a perpetual cash cow for Rockstar and Take2.

The PC version of GTAV has some extremely long legs as far as sales numbers go. Would be silly for Rockstar to leave all of that money on the table for Red Dead 2.

It probably would have sold way better on PC if it wasn't delayed. I bet many of these people already played it on console first.

PC Port was released in 2015 so about 2 years, game was first released 4 years ago on PS3/360.

Had it both on PS3 and PS4 before i got PC version.

It's very likely RDR2 will come to PC but probably only 1 year later because they'll make more money like that. It worked too well with GTA5, tons of people double dipped.

They won't risk losing sales to piracy so I highly doubt it'll be less than 1 year after console versions.
