Sony X900E settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

X900e is a very good TV. My previous TV was a W900a which is widely considered the best 1080p gaming TV ever made. Only things I don't like about the x900e is android tv is slow and the remote has a really narrow range.

Enable developer settings and set the process limit to 4 or less. This gets rid of the input lag in android. What's strange is after a couple of updates to the O/S, the range for the remote is a little better, but still needs improvement.

Is it me or do both the Netflix and YouTube app not display HDR from the tv's Google OS? I can HDR only get to work if I use the ps4 app.

I have a question about the power brick.
Does it get hot?
I have a large drawer under my TV stand, so I'm planning to put the brick in there, so it is not visible. Am I risking overheating?

Just checked the power brick after a few hours of gaming and it didn't feel super hot. I think you should be fine. Mind my brick is not enclosed.

Alright so I’m gonna be picking up the 65” X900E tomorrow, I’m excited! Coming from a 4 year-old Samsung 60”. The only thing that would make this TV that much better for me is if it had Tizen OS along with the minimalistic remote from Samsung.

Guys, I'm on the fence between the 900E and 930E vs LG B7A OLED

I'm currently using a Panasonic ST60 55" and I'm aware that the input lag on it is around 50~70 ms but I seem to not really be bothered by it.

I'm curious if the main difference between the 900 and 930 is input lag difference or are there other benefits that justify the much higher price tag that would be really worth that extra $$.

I'm also open to the idea of an OLED but have not done much research into those. I know that Jeff Gerstman says his OLED was the real game changer (literally) for his setup.

My budget would be $1500. The LG 55" B7A OLED seems like it's a direct competitor with the 930E so if the B7A offers a better image quality, is the better choice?

If you're using the TV in mostly dark scenarios I would go with the OLED, however, if you're going to be gaming with ambient light or during the day with some sunlight I would most likely go with the 930e

HDR10 performance is the best on the 930e and eventually it will get updated to also have Dolby Vision HDR. The 900e won't get Dolby Vision and its HDR performance isn't quite as good, but it's a solid TV set. Motion processing is better on the Sony TVs vs LG. You won't beat the blacks you can get on an OLED, but OLED has its own risks associated with it like burn-in. I'd be more concerned using an OLED as a gaming TV because of static images like heath bars, but some people have not had any issues. I'd check out rtings for TV reviews of all 3.

I bought the 55" XE9005 today along with a a PS4 Pro. It seems for 4K HDR I need the HDMI in ports 2 or 3. My problem is when I start Gran Turismo Sport the resolution auto switches to 1080p. I run the in game display assistant and it recognizes that it's a 4K HDR tv but according to the tv display info it is still 1080p. It switches back to 4K when I open Netflix. Any ideas on how to fix the resolution for GT Sport. Thanks.

You gotta set the HDMI signal format to enhanced format. I'm not near the TV and won't be for a while so I can't tell you exactly how to find that setting. It starts at the bottom of the home menu though.

I'm in the exact same boat. I was really gung-ho for the oled. Honestly having a hard time justifing the extra 800 vs the Sony 900. The 930 is not in the running because it is edge lit and makes viewing angles very poor. I think I will hold off until after ces. I want to see if the improvements to each line. If I had a frys by me that would been a no brainer deal on the LG.

Hi

Some opinion would be nice.

Reality Creation on gaming mode. Do you guys keep it on or turn it off? It appears to be a sharpening setting.

I keep flipping between using it and not using it. In some ways I quite like it, but I'm wondering if turning it off will reduce the latency of the gaming mode further.

Any opinion/recommendation of settings?

Thanks

I usually turn almost all bells and whistles off for any TV, especially "active" stuff. The only non-traditional features I have on is 'Local Dimming', set to low and 'Smooth gradation' also set to low. . Picture quality with this TV is stellar.

Reality Creation is off for me, as almost all the content I watch is 1080p and up.

Its an algorithm that adjusts detail and noise to create depth and clarity from lower resolution signals. Graphics and Game mode are both low-latency modes, so its easy to set up two different profiles and switch between them, if you wish to test. I believe it does introduce a bit of lag. Personally, I stopped messing with it at some point and just leave Reality Creation set to auto.

Am I a fool for getting the 75” 900e rather than the 940e? I really wanted Dolby Vision (everything else I have supports it) but that pixel lag was really off putting.

If you want to game on the TV you made the right call Imo. Reading reviews the 940 is terrible for gaming.

Anyone heard any rumors for next years Sony TVs.

Grabbed a 65x900e before the weekend and absolutely love it. 4K and HDR are real gamechangers for someone with a PS4 Pro and 4K Netflix account. The thing is a masterpiece and playing Witcher 3 / Assassin's Creed Origins in 4K is just insane.

My only issue is very minor light bleeding about an inch out from the left side of the screen. It's only apparent when there is non-black content on the screen, and I assume it's just part and parcel with direct-lit LED, but almost makes me wish I went with the OLED (not that I had the extra $1500 handy though). It's not overly distracting and probably not worth taking it back to the store for as I can mitigate it through lowered brightness / black settings, but yeah, OLED next time I think.

Does anyone use an HDMI splitter/switch with a PS4 Pro?

I've tried 3 different ones that all claim to be 4k/60 compatible but none pick up on the PS4 Pro signal (but all work with nvidia shield @ 4k). I've also tried turning off HDCP via PS4 settings.

Very weird issue. I just got this TV. I set everything up correctly. But so far HDR has been a nightmare. I don't know if this makes any sense. I think the HDR settings are reversed on my PS4. When HDR is clicked on, The image looks washed out. If I disable HDR it displays as you would expect it to look.

whats going on?

Are you plugged into hdmi 2 or 3 and have you set those input to enhanced?

Yep

I've tried disabling HDCP..

It's just so weird. The pS4 home screen displays in HDR. When I start a game (HDZ, GTS) it's like they disable HDR; you can see a slight screen flicker. While in game, if I return to the PS4 home screen and disable HDR it displays the game in the correct format.

Just for kicks I restarted the PS4.. Disabled HDR prior to starting the game.
Guess what? It started the game in HDR and retained the setting despite "automatic HDR" being unchecked in the PS4 video menu.

Ahh nice!! Yeah I read somewhere to leave hdr on off and if a game uses hdr it will turn it on. Glad it worked out for you!

I have an Nvidia Shield that can play both Netflix and Kodi. I love it and prefer it over the Android TV built-in support for Netflix. However, this one input (Shield on HDMI 2) has a wide range of formats to display.

What is the best way to go about this?

Do I need to edit two modes (Cinema Home and Cinema Pro), one for HDR and one for SD/HD stuff? The problem here is that switching the two is not easy (they really need to add a mode switcher to their remote).

Or would I create one and have the TV make changes based on if it detects HDR inputs? But if I do that, doesn't it only change the brightness to max? What about the other HDR settings that you want to have, like local dimming and xtender dynamic range?

I suppose the same question is true for inputs like a Sony Playstation or Xbox one with BluRay capabilities, where you want to change between game modes and movie modes under one HDMI port.

Definitely agree about the mode switcher, it's a pain having to go through all the menus to switch every time. As far as settings changing between HDR/non-HDR, afaik only the brightness and dynamic range change to max automatically (correct me if I'm wrong?).

I personally use a 'Custom' mode for the shield and the 'Game' mode for my PS4 Pro and just switch between the two.

Has anyone in this thread switched from a Plasma to a newer TV and noticed any issues?

I came very close to buying a new TV last year but held off, and came even closer this season. At one point I was waiting for a Best Buy salesguy to finish with a customer on Black Friday to come help me, as I specifically wanted to give him the sale (he'd already spent twenty minutes helping me, so I wanted to make sure he got it) and in that time decided not to spend the money. If he had literally been five minutes faster in finishing up with the other customer, I'd have a new TV. But ultimately, I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger.

That said, I'm fairly certain next Black Friday will be my time (or sooner if a good enough sale pops), and now I actually want to get my facts straight before then. I'm currently gaming on a 47-inch plasma that I bought in 2011. It's an LG set, and I love it. It has some minor burn-in issues, but they're easy to fix, and the set honestly looks stellar at 1080p. I recently played Horizon Zero Dawn on it, and even on a launch PS4, with no HDR, or any of the bells and whistles, it was still a joy to look at.

It's pretty safe to say that even when I get a new TV, I'll keep my old one around, maybe to plug older systems into in a different room or something. But I'd still like to upgrade. My biggest concern is latency and response time. The lowest response time I've been able to find on a modern set that's in my price range was 15ms. I know that low of a response time is probably hard to detect for any one with normal ass eyes like myself, but my concern is that it WILL be noticeable due to having gamed on a plasma with less than 1.5ms latency for the last six years. My old set before that was a plasma too, so I've been gaming on extremely low latency sets for around ten years. I never owned an LCD, and this is my biggest worry moving forward.

Can anyone speak to that?

Just want to reiterate that HDR requires you to use port 2 or 3. Port 1 does 4K only. Why this is so boggles my mind....

I agree. This is my first 4k TV. I could understand the first generation models doing this but in 2017?

All HDMI ports should be the same.

Even worse, Sony doesn’t even make it clear.

It's even worse when you consider that you need to use HDMI 3 for ARC, so you're left with one "good" port. I'd hoped to avoid an HDMI switch, but I'm going to need one to have the PS4/Xbone hooked up to an HDR port, as well using ARC for a soundbar.

Good luck, I haven't been able to find an HDMI switch compatible with a PS4 Pro (tried 3 different switches all claiming to be compatible).

I have a 65" X900E, and I have found some decent settings for PS4 Pro that really make the hdr pop in games like Horizon and Ratchet and Clank. So far I haven't had the same luck with the Xbox One X. In Madden 18 the colors look somewhat dull, and also COD WW2. Any advice on some decent settings for the X900E with X1X?

Not only that but it requires you to manually configure these hdmi ports in enhanced mode before being able to use hdr properly and automatically.

Anyone has good AC: origins hdr setting to share? I was playing with these yesterday. I discovered that i could push the nits up to 1000, but i have no idea about the paper white value; it doesnt seems to change the image that much.

My 49 inch will come this week I am stoked!

The main input will be my PC. I use it to watch movies, youtube etc. Is there any drawback to running everything in gaming mode? It seems like that would be easiest.

Reality creation raised an eyebrow in my case when I played around with it on 4K blu-ray. For instance, I was not totally blown away by the latest Dark Knight and Dunkirk 4k and the setting was off since I bought the TV 4 months ago.

When I set RC to manual and boost it very high, the picture resolution when through the roof and now it look amazing ! Works great on regular blu ray too

Almost seems like it needs to be on somewhat to give you full 4K capabilities?

I've seen other people here posting they put it at manual 10 for games , which is probably the equivalent of having it on auto , as auto is almost not noticable but subtle and just right

On the latest 4K HDR games (Xbox One X), auto give a very nice smart selective boost to the clarity of the picture; I love it
