Mixed race girl stirs up controversy after chosen to play as Joan of Arc in Orleans,France

Not really the best idea to have a minority to play as a historical figure, I guessed.
https://www.thelocal.fr/20180222/frances-first-mixed-race-joan-of-arc-targeted-by-racists
Mathilde Edey Gamassou was chosen among 250 girls Monday to play Joan for a spring festival marking the victory of the Catholic warrior saint in breaking the English siege of Orleans in 1429.

The 17-year-old, whose father is from Benin and whose mother is Polish, is set to ride horseback through the central city dressed in armour for an annual celebration dating back nearly six centuries.

But the announcement has been met with a flurry of posts on Twitter and on far-right websites branding her nomination an exercise in "diversity
propaganda" and an attempt to re-write French history.

Another stupid controversy, if she deserves it then nothing to complain about.
If she wasn't catholic then I could maybe understand.
I guess people are now so entrenched in their positions of 'us vs them' that anything is seen as an attack on their identity.

Meh it's a local festival. I see no dire issue here. It's a depiction of something, not the thing itself and for local consumption only. That said when a white guy is chosen to play Martin Luther King one day, or Shaka Zulu in some play or festival, I expect no complaints and will support their role.

Who cares, let her enjoy herself, its a spring festival. How historically accurate is a festival going to be anyways, if that's their angle.

Drink beer, eat, have fun. Its a simple thing really.

I can't wait for Ben Affleck to play Malcom X! Oh and I'm super happy that that Betty White is playing Rosa Parks. I'm all for diversity in depicting historical events! It's all about pandering not historical accuracy!

Why do people give a shit.

To be honest, nobody really gave a shit. The girl is a french catholic who can ride horses and does a lot of fencing, that's why she was picked. If you read the french news sources (e.g. here& here) there were like two racist tweets that are currently being investigated because the Secretary of State in charge of Equality between Women and Men raised a fuss about it on twitter. It's especially ridiculous considering the many french overseas departments. There's really not a whole lot to see here. As far as I'm concerned, she'll be a pretty cool Jeanne d'Arc.

You know that'll never happen. If anyone non-Black played MLK people would absolutely lose their shit, and to be honest I'd totally agree with them on it.

So I'm kind of split on this.

When I think Joan of Arc I am going to picture someone with fair skin, just the kind of image Id have in my head in the same way if this was a play from a historical Asian event I'd kind of you know, expect someone Asian to play the role (and Arab an Arab role, African for an African role etc).

If I was watching something specific to Indigenous Australians and the role was being played by someone who wasnt actually Indigenous, I have to be honest here and say that would really bug me even as someone who is white.

Attempting to rewrite history though? Thats bit of a stretch to say as a means of offense. I dont think anyone is going to be look back on history like that and think 'omg Joan of Arc was white?' I donr think its going to cause any confusion in history.

These kind of controversy are fucking stupid. It does not matter who she/he is. It does not matter if she plays joan nor does not matter if scarlett Johanson plays Major in Ghost in the shell.
People need to get away from this race shit.

Why do I get the feeling the same people who would complain about this girl playing Joan of Arc are also the same cognitively dissonant people complaining about people not assimulating into the target countries culture .

So stupid, poor girl. It looks like students applied and were chosen based on several sets of criteria. If she was chosen for specifically not being white, then I can see why some people might have a problem.

How many of them care about Jesus Christ being played by Willem Dafoe, Jim Caviezel and all sorts of non Middle Eastern persons over and over again?

I mean, its a play. And its not like they are trying to say ''Joan of Arc was mixed raced in real life'' so why is this an issue?

The syntax of that title is terrible.

You make it sound like the girl stirred up controversy just by existing. No, the "controversy" is that racists are allowed to exist.

Everyone here knows if it was a black historical figure being portrayed by a white person there would be riots.

It wouldn't matter if race had nothing to do with the selection, it would be endlessly condemned as racism.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was it was someone on the far-left who tweeted the original racist remarks trying to stir shit up. Also, twitter needs to die already.

Dr.Guru of Peru

played the long game
And to top it off, she is white.

Black historical people have been played by white people for centuries without riots.

Michael Jackson was played by Joseph Fiennes in 2016, and Christian Bale was Moses in 2015. Did anyone riot?

Appropriate username. You have outrage down to a science.

There's really no issue with this girl playing a part in a parade and if anyone thinks it's an intentional attempt to misrepresent or rewrite history then maybe they should be doing more to make sure people actually know the original history.

Of course. You’ve got a sizable amount of the population that screams keep it culturally accurate but flip the fuck out when they correctly cast someone black in hunger games.

The end goal is to keep representing diverse places with casts like this
1488375399-landscape-1488370326-friends-cast.jpg

and cry about snowflakes and identity politics in the rare times the tables turn as if movies still aren’t being made TODAY where non-white characters are made white but they don’t notice or call that shit out on authenticity because their fragile little egos can’t stand to see a motherfucker that looks a bit different from them on a screen that one time out of fifty

While I'm in favor of always having historical figures portrayed as accurately as they can be (ethnicity, religion, etc) in media meant for the masses, this is essentially a local festival. I don't see this as some big deal.

Not only does the very existence of that article completely disprove your point but by the third (the other two don't even fit the 5 years criteria) "example" is the michael jackson thing which is provably false. Infact, the most basic of googling will find outrage for almost every single one of those movies.

Due to riots?

Ooooh I see, too caught up in the obvious embelishment.

Could you strawman any harder?

Just show us one riot over this.

Wrong about what lol

Pack it up guys, no one ever complained about black people being portrayed by white people. Better get ed sheeran to play martin luther king in a broadway musical!

*done arguing with you until you stop being deliberately obtuse.

So are we ignoring the fact that one group of people tried as hard as possible to stamp out the other group's history and culture for centuries when having this discussion?

False equivalency.

Now that's how you strawman.

straw man
noun
noun: strawman
1.an intentionally misrepresented proposition that is set up because it is easier to defeat than an opponent's real argument.

Can't even differentiate between a strawman and argumentum ad absurdum.

False equivalency.

Then you would also have to ignore the fact that it stopped, many many years ago. You don't get to be racist just because people were racist years ago but complain about racism at the same time. That would be cognitive dissonance.

So my position was that black people never complain about this stuff, and I'm being obtuse lol

You linked an article titled "25 Times White Actors Played People Of Color And No One Really Gave A S**t"

But congratulations, you've officially gone beyond obtuse and landed in disingenuous territory.

Good. More minorities should get roles usually played by white people. The more it happens the less fragile white people will be. That's called progress folks!

Did you read the article to actually understand what that title actually implies?

There ya go guys. As you can see, well.... Some people want to 'black-wash' history. And many are fine with changing facts to accommodate 'muh diversity'. While I have nothing against Mathilde Edey Gamassou she just doesn't fit the part.
+1 to the revisionist historians .... for now.

"No one really gave a shit" has but one implication. Again, did you actually pass grade 3 english?

The rest of the article either 1) Points to old movies from the 60's and earlier. 2) uses pathetically flimsy examples 3) Virtually every single modern one has outrage attached to it.

Stay losing
