Super Smash Bros Switch Announced! Would you prefer a 3DS+Wii U port?

TBH, I'm starting to feel like it's going to be somewhere in between a deluxe port and a new iteration. I suspect many of the mechanics will be close to the same if not identical, but modes, Amiibo functionality, and cast will all get overhauls (less FE characters, for example).

I'm just hoping that the current guest characters will remain along with other third party additions (Bring back Snake and Crash Bandicoot anyone? For lulz).

If it's a deluxe version of the wiiu then I guess I won't be getting a Switch until Pokemon maybe. Shit came out 4 years ago give
a proper sequel by now.

So where are people getting this "ballot result" that made them say "Oh K. Rool has many picks!"
His mii fighter outfit I guess?
A few other fan favourites like Ashley and even Lloyd got one so I figure the ballot results had some effect on those picks.
He might've been at the bottom of the selected pile for all we know tho, lol.

I mean, they never used D-Pad for movement at all unless you count the Wii Remote control, and where did you pull that shit about unresponsive? Also the series actually has three movement speeds - walk, run and dash.

Then single-tap + a face or shoulder button to dash and double-tap to run. With that, I already conceived a more precise control system than basing it on the speed at which you thrust an analog stick.

I always felt it should've controlled like Guardian Heroes at its core, or Castlevania (something far more of you have played) but with some additions.

Probably an enhanced port, but it should really be a new game, mainly to fix the online. And not nearly as important, but I really hope they make better use of amiibo this time!

I don't think the game would be coming this year if all they could say is "2018". Should it be a new game and not a remaster with new features. My guess is early next year

What does the 2018 mean if not the release date?

I was sure this would just be a port but that Sakurai tweet had me thinking otherwise. It's weird if it is a new smash releasing in 2018 because the past games had a much longer gap between announcement and release. That gave it a lot more time for hype to develop with daily updates and character trailers. Odd to just abandon that. It was a great way to promote the game. A Smash 4.5 of some kind would definitely be more realistic.

If last week anyone had suggested Crash Bandicoot in Smash, I’d have laughed. After that direct… maybe?

I'd much prefer a new one, as I already have a portable iteration on the 3DS. Smash 4 had its time. Give me a new one! Ryu probably won't be in it, but it won't matter much if the new roster turns out to be sick

I'm personally very excited for a new Smash Bros. Wii U was great but it's no longer one of my go to titles for company gaming. Getting a little stale.

What features do you most want to see?

I want to see...
Smash Run
Expanded Sunspace Emissary
A crapton of characters and levels
8 Player Smash with Wii U Pro controller support to reward those who own the game on the Wii U.

Simon Belmont as well as some kickass Castlevania stages/music and konami assist trophies to go with him.

Better custom moves

Actual moveset for Ganon

No more godawful RNG to unlock stuff.

Keep 8 player smash for sure.

Nerf Bayonnaise. Like seriously. She's the most broken character in the game, and it's ridiculously easy to play her.
Buff the Puff. Melee days anyone?
Hmm... I think it would be cool to play as the SA-X from Metroid.
Please, PLEASE don't add a bunch of new Fire Emblem characters. They're a huge chunk of the roster already.
(optional) Give Little Mac a special "fck u skrub" sound effect every time he side-Bs off the stage.
Buff Roy. Please. Bring our boy back to his glory days.
Give Falco his Melee shine back.
uhhh... As for more new characters, I think Knuckles would be fun to play. Or even Shadow. Or even bring back Pichu for the meme factor.
"Better Nerf Greninja"... nah just kidding. He's actually a pretty fun and versatile character.

But really... A brand new Smash game when Sm4sh's competitive play is just getting warmed up? I really hope Sm4sh doesn't die out...

AND FOR ALL OF YOU WHO THINK YOU CAN JUST SDI OUT OF BAYO COMBOS I SAY THIS:
Pick up a character that isn't clickbait bullshit and we'll see how good you really are. Come at me.
(actually Bayo is okay as long as the person playing isn't an asshole)

I want them to just take Smash 4 and add a shitload to it. Like, 20 new characters, 30 new stages, actual single player modes (Break the Targets, Board the Platforms, Race to the Finish, Subspace 2) and an option for removing stage hazards.

And bring back the effin Ice Climbers. I hate that the 3DS version existed and screwed them out of their slot.

Melee Released the same year it was announced so this wouldn't be anything new for the franchise.

Melee also released 17 years ago at a very different time with different marketing opportunities. I don't see why they would go back to announcing and releasing Smash within the same year when what they've established worked so well and gave Nintendo constant coverage in the media. If it is Smash 5, my guess is they can't promote it in the same way as 4 due to a smaller roster.

I'm certain that this will be sold as an original entry. I mean, what constitutes a new Smash Bros anyway?? We know there'll be new characters, we know there'll be new stages, if there's a couple of new game modes and a new interface then it basically already is a new entry, even if they use the same gameplay engine

Fair point. It's not like Smash games officially have numbered entries anyway and I could see them just using a new subtitle. I mean, Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS Deluxe doesn't exactly work too well...

They'll port the wiiu engine over and go on from there... I think the stages will suffer most since that's what I hated the most from the wiiu - graphics, size etc
The rest is good though... hoping single player is as good as in melee

We don't actually know there will be new stages and the new character is Inkling - that's all we have. Given Nintendo's track record as of late, many of us aren't optimistic for a new game. I just don't want to be charged $60 for the exact same content + a few bells and whistles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I'm hoping for dozens of new characters, stages, and modes like the difference between Smash, Melee, Brawl and 4. I'm talking single-player content to keep me busy, 5-10 new characters to master (hopefully not from Fire Emblem) and all new stages + bonus retro stages. You know, like a new game.

Would anyone be opposed to dropping some of the "regulars" in favor of new characters? I'm not saying they need to in order to make room, just wondering if anyone else feels like some of the staples have overplayed themselves.
I don't think you'd get many takers for this and specific resistance from the pros. The only reason I can think of for preferring they remove older characters is a desire to not fight against them. Am I off-base here? I'd rather have options, especially at parties, and like you said, it's not required to remove older characters in order to provide new ones. I for one can hop into new characters and enjoy trying out new play styles, but my casual friends would not be happy to see Link, Mario, Samus or Captain Falcon replaced.

Hell no I don't want another port. That's one big reason I regret buying a Switch so soon. Nintendo is just porting all the Wii U games to Switch it's like I'm being punished for buying the Wii U and lots of games for it.

The Smash community is not like the Capcom fighting community. Capcom fans take whatever they can get, but if you take anything away from a Smash game, there will be some resistance. So I feel an enhanced port will be the most favorable. But for me personally, I want a new game, with new mechanics, and a roster of similar size, but different cast. If you really wanted to play Smash 4, you would have played a good chunk of it by now. Bring on the new.

Either way, I get to play Smash in portable form with better graphics

I've always wondered if cutting back the number of returning characters would allow for new characters that use certain roles/playstyles that wouldn't work against the old. Could having a smaller pool of all-new fighters make entries more mechanically and strategically diverse? As a counter to that, I've also wondered if there are a limited number of ways to approach building a well-rounded fighter, so that cutting out the oldies would result in a bunch of characters that look new but play essentially the same as the old ones. I'm not sure which is true, but I would like to see them give the former a try. They can always add fan favorites via (hopefully free) DLC later on.

I do know this though, if they don't stop adding characters to the mix and asking Sakurai to balance the whole roster to his obsessive standard, then he will likely die from overwork in the middle of Smash 6's production. The man is insanely devoted.

I get that fighting games don't usually remove characters for fear of pissing off pros and fans, but Smash has always been a different kind of fighting game, and I think the series could thrive even if they opted for a major roster shakeup every few entries. On the other hand, why run the risk when they could easily experiment with a different/smaller roster in a themed spinoff game (say a hypothetical Pokemon Smash)? The best solution would probably be a full-fat Smash entry followed by as experimental spinoff a few years later. Then, with more data, make a decision as to how the next Smash's roster (or Smashes' rosters) should look.

I'd be perfectly happy to see the clones and a bunch of the Pokemon get the boot.

I'm thinking Smash 4 Wii U with all Smash 4 3DS exclusive stages and music tracks included (and brought up to HD quality), as well as the Smash Run mode exclusive to Smash 4 3DS. Beyond that, a few extra characters (obviously starting with Inkling).

Did I call it or what?

(Obviously, there's more content than what I described, but it's pretty much dead on). Admittedly, no Smash Run confirmed, but otherwise...

It sounds amazing.
They even remembered Starfy, Joy Mech Fighter, Mother side cast, and Bomberman.
Even Snake and the GC controller. Optional stage animations, etc.
I don't think I have much to complain about this, they really covered their bases well for the most complained about lacking features (except the adventure mode in Brawl, that one isn't coming back)

Hopefully the new content is worth it.
