Splatoon 2 is a massive success. I wonder if Nintendo have another break out new IP for Switch... that isn’t Labo.

Like the North Star sounds so weird. I did not understand why they put the game name like that, Yakuza is not translated to Like a Dragon. Anyway, it was good start, let's see if the game reaches the 400k, that Sega is planing to sell.

Next week Splatoon 2 might be on the top again, because this week the bundle will be sold again, I think March 17th or at least it might have a boost on sales.

And this was impressive :

+-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+
|System | This Week | Last Week | Last Year | YTD | Last YTD | LTD |
+-------+------------+------------+------------+------------+------------+-------------+
| NSW | 45.084 | 45.083 | 61.998 | 535.375 | 391.150 | 3.847.994 |

The difference between this and last week sales, was something I never saw.

And I was not expecting much of Your Four Knight Princesses Training Story, but the Famitsu's numbers were very low. And Bayonetta 2 is nowhere to be seen ;/

Next week will have Kirby which should top the charts.

I am really curious to see how Kirby will performed. I saw a lot of people complaining about the game been 30fps, Kirby be slower than he is on Smash Bros, the game not be as hard as a Dark Souls game and so on.

I hope that the game does well and sell as much as the 3DS entries. And particularly after I played the demo, I am just want that the game don't be too focused on multiplayer.

Dragon Quest Builders still hanging in there. Dengeki reported it selling ~55% of its initial shipment at 27k copies last week. Another 8k copies isn't that bad. At least it didn't completely drop off. It was also placed #2 on the Japanese eshop charts the week of March 1-8 and was at #10 March 8-14.

I feel like the main audience for Kirby games won't care about those things too much. I haven't played or followed a traditional Kirby game in a long time, but I think it should sell well.

[NSW] ARMS (Nintendo) {2017.06.16} - 2,746 / 403,081

Well at least in Dengeki it reached over the 400K mark. Which makes about other recent fighting games released in Japan. Could anyone share numbers for these games:
  • Chaos Code: New Sign of Catastrophe
  • Brawlout
  • Gundam Versus
  • Street Fighter V
  • Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2
  • Tekken 7
  • Marvel vs Capcom Infinite
  • Injustice 2
Japan seems a bit more receptive to new or different entries in the genre, rest of the world likes to gravitate towards more stablished stuff or games with strong IPs tyed to them.

Now sure on the exact numbers (don't know anything for first 3), but the numbers for most of those are pretty low. I know they flopped pretty hard first week, and I've not seen any celebration for any of them reaching 100k in Japan..

Guilty Gear Xrd SIGN surpassed 100k (Arc celebrated, but the Revelators didn't do so hot, and Japan was already pissed over Dizzy from SIGN (she's pretty big over there) and then how she was handled in Revelator made it worse. Rev 2 debuted at just less than 11k in Japan.

Infinite just outright tanked, don't think its even hit 30k, and SFV had sold short of 82k in 2016, so it probably has surpassed 100k by now with AE (AE debuted short of 8k).

Tekken 7 sold 89k last year, however while it was fairly low sales on consoles (Tekken's worst), it was a huge hit in arcades. It also has content still exclusive to the arcade version and was updated with everything consoles got (except modes obviously). Given it's single player modes were shit, and it had been in arcades for almost 2 and a half years there, Japan just might have thought console version wasn't worth it compared to previous installments. *shrugs*

Injustice 2 was never even released in Japan.

Thank you for sharing the data you know of TheDuskwalker TheDuskwalker .

So as far as Japan is concerned ARMS outsold it's pears over there. Wonder what's the stance of Nintendo looking at it that way. Would that be enough to greenlight a sequel?

Never understood why they didn't push an ARMS bundle when Switches were more scarce, games that were sure fire hits got them instead like Splatoon for example. The game is stablished already the resources should have gone to support the new IP. Ironically that kind of strong push is one of the contributing factors why Splatoon is enjoying the kind of success it cuarrently has.

I'd think so. By the end of 2017, it hit 1.61 million WW, which isn't bad. There was also a recent Famitsu interview with the director of Arms where it sounds like they're hoping to continue the series one day:
Finally, when asked about plans for a sequel, Yabuki says it’s still too early for that since not even a year has passed since ARMS’ release and they will still continue to update the current game. The team’s stance is that they would like to talk about this topic again when they’re finally in the right time and condition to be able to provide a big surprise to everyone.

I do agree with you. Kirby will do just fine.

And talking about Kirby, any information or prediction about it sales ? I think that > 60K is feasible.

Things looked fine after the first sales report where it easily shipped over a million copies, after that the game seemed to hit the brakes. Which is a shame because content wise the game improved dramatically, at the same time Nintendo isn't pushing the game much in terms of marketing since it was absent in some of the spots promoting various games.

Yabuki seems to be very passionate with it and i would say with good reason since the game is quite special, hopefuly he has some influence in the chain of command and can buy the game a 2nd chance.

As of Kirby, if i would guess a range maybe between >70K<90K? We know Kirby is much of a slow burner but the Swicth hasn't seen many action in terms of brand new first party releases from some months now. Maybe that would make the game slightly more front loaded.

I think >60k would be a very safe bet. I'm thinking closer to a 100k.

Looking at more recent Kirby games:

[3DS]Kirby: Triple Deluxe(Nintendo, 01/09/14) – 214,208 (New)
[3DS]Kirby: Planet Robobot(Nintendo, 04/29/16) – 144,846 (New)

The 3DS likely had a bigger user base than the Switch when those games were released though and I'm not sure how the demographic of the 3DS compares to the Switch. I think Kirby tends to be more popular among younger audiences and I feel the audience on Switch might generally be a bit older than 3DS? Star Allies also wasn't as well received as either of those games. At the same time, there really isn't anything noticeable releasing on the Switch for the first half of 2018. I'm still going with >100k but less than Planet Robobot.

Good point. Most of Nintendo's series have very long legs in terms of sales. Just look at #3-6 on the charts here. But Arms is a new IP and not everything can be as big as Splatoon. I don't think Nintendo was expecting it to be as big as those series either. Referring to the Famitsu interview again:

Yabuki first said that Nintendo had initially planned to update ARMS multiple times until it was updated to version 5.0.0 by the end of 2017.

I think some people felt that Arms didn't meet expectations and so Nintendo dropped support by the end of 2017 but I think it's quite the opposite. Nintendo had moderate expectations for it and their plans for post-release support reflect that.

Arms is not for me. I played the demo and did not enjoy. But I am glad that the game is doing good. I particularly was expecting the game to sell 200k, but it reached 400k, and this is quite an achievement. Is not a success like Splatoon, but is indeed a success.
