Welcome to the new rock and metal thread here on GAF. Feel free to talk about anything and everything that falls between these two wide-spanning genre's from sugar coated pop rock to hyper technical, brutal death metal. Been to a show, discovered some cool new band/album, tell us about it!

Some Useful Links:
Metal Archives - This one's pretty self-explanatory, need to know something about a metal band 9 times out of 10 you'll find it here.
Spirit of Rock / Spirit of Metal - For that 1 time Metal Archives doesn't have what you're looking for then you'll probably find it here.
Metal Injection 'Weekly Injection' - Pretty handy weekly post of new albums.
Bandcamp - Their lists and scene highlight's are a good way to find new music.
AngryMetalGuy - Although they don't always get it right, their reviews are always an informative read (or if the albums bad they give a good laugh).
Discogs - For those of us who still like to buy physical music.
RateYourMusic - Useful for keeping track of what you've been listening to, or to get recommendations.

Introduce Yourself (optional):

I created this thread a little later than I originally intended but here it is.

I'll update the OP with some more resources/youtube channels/etc when I have the time, if anyone has anything else interesting to add let me know.
I'll also post up my introduction when I get the time.

The OT title comes from a song by Enter Shikari (giving you a small insight into my random music tastes) called 'Solidarity'. I actually got the lyrics wrong, so it should be "We sing this song in solidarity" but what I got sounds pretty decent too ;) They played a show here the night after the Manchester Arena bombing and played this song in tribute to the victims, those last couple of mins of the song gave me goosebumps when the band stopped playing and everyone in the venue kept repeating that part loud and proud.

I'll definitely drop by this thread from time to time and see what recommendations are out there. I've been on a 90s kick lately with my music habits, so GWAR is back on the menu.

Nice OT Angel. Here are some of my metal/rock favorites... (posting favorite songs from bands I like)

Gojira- The Cell

Elder- Spirit at Aphelion

Lamb of God- Reclamation
(met a LoG tec/roady at rehab, thus started my obsession with them)

NOFX- The Decline
One from my high school days one of my favorites of all time... 18 minutes and I still know all the lyrics! (kinda classified as Punk but god damn)

Jeff Beck- Nadia
More of a technician on the guitar a bit slower and more 'mature', more like rock less like metal. Either way its fu**ing amazing!

Black Sabbath- Supernaut
Cant have a metal thread without the OG!

Gonna be BROOTAL.

This shit just sets me off, I've punched and kicked so many people to this song during one of the 14 terror concerts I've attended

These guys are my all time fav, particularly this song was what did it for me.

The first time I saw them Vince(Vocals) threw my the mic at the 1:58 mark at I got to start off the break down. One of the most memorable moments of my life.

All of that is pretty old, as far as new stuff I finally got around to picking up NAILS new(ish) album, kinda late to the party on this one.

And if everything goes well I'll be heading to local bangers Dead Crowns album release show here in Portland this Saturday!

Oh yeah man, been a huge fan of them forever. I saw them at the roseland in Portland in like 2004-2006 cant exactly remember but the line up was - As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engaged, and In Flames... one of the best shows of my life.

Check out these DooDs as well man!

Really listen to this whole song through. One of the best breakdown into guitar solos in the genre I've ever heard.

Also just a few for flavoring

The CD sampling of most of the songs due them true justice but eh, it is what it is.

You're in for a treat, those 3 bands are killer live.

Seeing a lot of metalcore posted here as well, anyone check out Bleeding Through's comeback single? Sticking to their tried and true mix of symphonic black metal meets crushing hardcore:

Favorite Concerts: Danzig, Slough Feg, Judas Priest, Sonata Arctica, AFI, Iced Earth, Slayer, Gwar, The Misfits (they sucked but my band opened so it’s significant to me)

How did you get into Rock/Metal: I’ve listened to rock and metal my entire life. Some of my earliest memories are of air guitaring and singing Black Sabbath songs with my mom.

Cool bands from your state: I haven’t kept up since I’ve been out of the music scene for years.

I’ll leave you with some songs.

A newer song from my favorite “modern” metal band, Slough Feg.

Judas Priest before they were hellbent for leather.

Nothing Iron Maiden has done with Bruce Dickinson comes close to this for me.

Thin Lizzy has songs other than The Boys are Back in Town.

I’ve been known to get down to some black metal from time to time.

How did you get into rock/metal: Got into rock with that song everyone loves to hate 'Bring me to Life' by Evanescence and from there I just kept expanding outward into similar bands and increasingly heavier sounds.

Cool band(s) from your own country/state: Ireland has a wide range of genres represented but I'm gonna avoid some of the more obvious ones like Primordial, Thin Lizzy or *sigh* U2.

Randomly stumbled upon these guys while browsing on Youtube, anyone get into the whole blackgaze craze?

I don't know what blackgaze is but that video was pretty awesome to watch. Not a bad song either. I did that Soothsayer Umpire song, I might use it for a DnD game soon.

Here are a few more songs from my child(ish) hood. I listened to all types of metal.

Blackgaze is one of those modern made up sorta genres, mixture of black metal and shoegaze made somewhat popular by a band called Deafheaven. Personally I found Deafheaven to be pretty bland so I'm not sure how they managed to spearhead a genre but that isn't to say the whole genre is a bust, a couple of my favourites would be Alcest and An Autumn For Crippled Children.

Insane that this sort of stuff still happens to these guys:

Yeah I am sorry but I can't remember the last time a Satanist committed either a car bombing, suicide bombing, school shooting, etc. If that is the case then every Muslim and Christian that enters Georgia should be arrested? What a bunch of bullshit.

I’m going to see Babymetal in Atlanta next month.

Did anyone else see Band Maid’s April Fools video?

I was also turned on to Sabaton recently, so good.

Picked up a pair of (admittingly pricey) tickets for Incubus last week. Never seen them live before but their HQ Live release is really good

Absolute favorites:
Tourniquet
Megadeth

Other great bands:
Manowar
Helloween
Deliverance
Believer
Cyclone Temple
Anthrax
Metallica
Hirax
Dark Angel
Iron Maiden
Stryper

Thrash is the absolute best metal subgenre.
I'm not that much into the "core" bands, but I pretty much at least like almost every subgenre out there.
Thrash is my thing though.

Favourite Vocalists
Guy Ritter (ex-Tourniquet)
Katon W. De Pena (Hirax)

Favourite Instrumentalists (Drummers/Guitarists/Bassists/Triangle/etc.)
Ted Kirkpatrick from Tourniquet is an amazing drummer.
Here's one instrumental track where he plays drums over harpsichord music:

Let me introduce you to Tourniquet.
Their first album was released in 1990 and they are going to release a new one this year.
The band started as a thrash/speed metal band, went through a "hard rock groove phase" and went back to thrash with progressive and whatever "neoclassical" elements mixed with other subgenres.

I thought to put ONE SONG from EACH OF THEIR ALBUMS that have original songs in them (there are two compilation discs with both having new songs, so I'm going include those here too) so that anyone interested can take a better look into one band and see how they have changed through the years.
I would be glad if others would give the same treatment to other bands too. I am interested in hearing how someone's favorite band has changed over the years and hear an example of a fan's favorite pick from each of their albums.

Ok, here we go!

--------------------

This trio is often said to be the classic era of Tourniquet. For some these three albums are the only ones they are interested in, and some are more interested in albums after these.
Anyway, these three albums are more of classic thrash and speed metal with a bit of progressive edge and getting heavier and darker in each new album.

The Test for Leprosy from Stop the Bleeding (1990)

A Dog's Breakfast from Psycho Surgery [retitled as Psychosurgery in 2001] (1991)

Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance from Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance (1992)

--------------------

Here the lead vocalist (who is one of the founding members) leaves the band and a new vocalist takes his place. The second lead guitar player leaves the band. The classic lineup is no more. The music style sees drastic change from thrash to a mixture of groove metal, heavy metal and hard rock (with maybe a hint of thrash elements here and there).

Vanishing Lessons from Vanishing Lessons (1994)

Carry the Wounded from Carry the Wounded EP (1995)

Here the band records two of their heaviest songs for their compilation album which makes fans be very excited of Tourniquet getting back to form (lol, didn't happen as the next album shows).
These are also the last recordings of the second of the three founding members of the band as the original main guitarist leaves the band.
Perfect Night for a Hanging from The Collect Works of Tourniquet compilation album (1996)

After the heavy tease in the compilation album the band goes back to softer groove oriented hard rock.
This one is the album's fastest and heaviest song.
Tire Kicking from Crawl to China (1997)

The band recorded acoustic versions of some of their older songs and made an album out of them, but added one new track which was again the heaviest song they had ever done, giving another chance for their old fans to become excited about the band perhaps getting back to form this time for real.
Trivializing the Momentous, Complicating the Obvious from Acoustic Archives (1998)

----------------------------

.....to be continued in the next post.....

....continued from the previous post.....

-------------------

Here begins the new era for Tourniquet.
The songs are again thrashy and heavy, but now with increased progressiveness. Long and complex songs with a bit of "avantgarde" here and there.

Besprinkled in Scarlet Horror from Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm (2000)

This album had Marty Friedman play most of the lead guitar solos.
Architeuthis from Where Moth and Rust Destroy (2003)

Antiseptic Bloodbath from Antiseptic Bloodbath (2012)

The next album was originally supposed to be a solo project for the only founding member of the band,
but it ended up being a weird solo album and official album hybrid with tons of guest vocalists and musicians.
There are lots of "core" elements in this album with "core" vocals and "core" breakdowns.
Drowning in Air from Onward to Freedom (2014)
WARNING!!!!! NSFW STUFF IN THE VIDEO!!!! LOTS OF REAL BRUTAL SEALIFE DEATHS SHOWN THERE!!!!
THE ALBUM'S THEME WAS PRO-VEGAN AND THIS LYRIC VIDEO HOLDS NO PUNCHES SHOWING IT.

------------------

So, this was an introduction to Tourniquet who released their first album in 1990 and has been going on in various forms and with various styles to this day.
And again, please, if anyone wants to give the same treatment to some other band I would be glad to read about it and listen to it.

I'm not much into harscore stuff tbh.

Only bands I generally enjoy our..
1. Deftones
2. Took (Accept 10k Days)
3. At the Drive In
4. The Mars Volta
5. Nine Inch Nails

Recently I've been really enjoying LeButtcherets. Their a Mexican garage punk band.
It's really Just Terri Gender Bender and a revolving cast of bass player/drummer. Shes also the GF of Omar from ATDI/TMV.
No chick in rock can touch her. Hands down the most gnarly musician, lyricist, performer etc..

All their albums are pretty damn good, last one was superb imo.

New album is on the way. Heres the latest song.

Also.
Terri toured with the Melvins 2 years ago and they hit it off so the formed a new group, basically it's the Melvins with Terri on lead vocals. Band is called Crystal Fairy.

Also, another older band I love to promote I use to listen to as a kid "Drive like Jeru"
This is from 1991-1994..
This is the FIRST post punk band. You can see many MANY bands came from their sound.

So guys let me throw a bit of a curveball here:

This album is entirely awesome but the first song is holy sweet fuck. It begins with a very harsh industrial death metal and then it becomes a piano and voice and holy shit what a voice this lady has, it's very operatic and intense. Although the song is beautiful it's the lyrics that do it for me:

My master pulled me from my bed
Ripped every cull from out my head
Held me down to strip me bare
Said "Hell is real, I'll take you there."

Oh master, master, please be kind
Don't leave me somewhere god won't find
Don't drag me to a sea of flame
From which I'll never rise again

She then comes back for vengeance and shit and it's amazing how she manages to make a line like "woe to all who inhabit the earth for now I walk amongst you" sound true and frightening. Fucking amazing stuff.

A minor introduction, just to show that I listen to this music daily.

Some of my favorite metal/hardcore bands (or any of the million sub-genres): Alexisonfire, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Anthrax, Disarmonia Mundi, Deftones, Megadeth, Architects, In Flames and many more. Tried to keep it a little varied between sub genre's. It's safe to say that the first one I mentioned is my favorite.

Always willing to discover more or share a few that might not be known that well:

These two for example. Miroist is instrumental only and a one-man band
Pene Corrida is a cover band from my home country (The Netherlands), which I find highly entertaining from time to time.

A few weeks ago I introduced Tourniquet here. I posted one song from each of their album from 1990 to 2014.

They have now released the first single of their upcoming album that will be released in Summer 2018.

Here's Gazing at Medusa:

Not sure if Deen Castronovo, who sings the lead vocals on choruses and such in the song, will be singing in more songs in the album or if he's just a guest vocalist, but damn he sounds great!
He's done stuff with Journey, Steve Vai, Ozzy Osbourne, Marty Friedman, to name a few. What an amazing raspy voice he has!
(note, the first vocals in the song are done by the band's guitarist Aaron Guerra - Deen comes in when the first chorus begins)

I feel like I'm stuck in the 2000s music-wise (as I listen to music from 2000s and before). Can I get some recommendations on rock and metal from the last 8 years? (and not thrash metal :p )

What sort of stuff are you looking for? Also do you mean new bands or just music in general? Either way let me just spam a list of a few random things I've been listening to recently.

Chelsea Wolfe – Hiss Spun
Junius – Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light
Leprous – Malina
Hallatar – No Stars upon the Bridge
Septic Flesh – Codex Omega
AFI – AFI (The Blood Album)
Eighteen Visions – XVIII
Cellar Darling – This is the Sound
Below the Sun – Alien World
Alkaloid - Liquid Anatomy
Bleed from Within - Era
Howling Sycamore - Upended
Oceans of Slumber - The Banished Heart
Arkona - V pogonie za beloj ten'yu

Thanks will check out.
Just new music in general, but new bands is also exciting. I'm so out of touch that I haven't been even keeping attention on new stuff from old bands either. Like I didn't know AFI still produced new music.

Here's a newer band that sounds like an older band:

The band's name is Christian Mistress (not a religious band despite the name) and they sound like a 70s band. It's female fronted and kinda reminds me of Black Sabbath.
