God of War - Review Thread

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
Thats great that its getting great reviews, but the tone and gameplay change annoys me a bit

Do people forget how much of a horrible person kratos is, this is a guy that murdered innocent people like nothing, and literally uses people as game progression tools in extremely gory ways, and now you're telling me we now have a story on how kratos is in being a father? Come on now

Come on, story telling in the PS2 era versus now. It's not that hard to see why single player story telling has evolved and why franchises have evolved along with the times.

Though it can be argued that Ian and Damiani try to push their political viewpoints where it needn't be (namely Ian). However, this is a Huber review and Huber is a pretty chill dude.

Glad to hear a lot of the praise as I was expecting around 84-88 on review aggregate sites. Still a bit nervous that this is all overblown, so I will temper my expectations.
I do not know him to be honest so I can not say much about it. It is just my perception of Polygon. But so far the worst REview did come from Waypoint in whcih thy also included this great bit

"But much like the real world, God of War is full of angry men driven by lust, power, and jealousy. "

Again What I really do not want is that they hammer this sit in how bad masculinity is etc. Give it one Arc maybe and done. I do really not want to see constant flashbacks that tells us how shitty Kratos is/was

🤔🤔 I hope for the right reasons.

ALL the reasons. ;)

I live in Oregon and it is quite legal to smoke marijuana here. Hopefully the rest of the world will be coming around soon!

My birthday is 4/25 so I am more excited that it releases around my B-day than 4/20. I love marijuana but I am not into "420" culture myself. Too old for that shit. lol

Sorry if I am misunderstanding what you are talking about. Ian, Damiani, and Huber are all members of Easy Allies. I have no clue about Polygon or Waypoint's reviewers as I tend to avoid authoritarian left trash sites like that.

Pre-launch review scores are typically high. Especially for a game where the publisher flies reviewers out for a posh “review event” at some resort in, I dunno, off the top of my head, Norway?

https://www.gamereactor.eu/grtv/370953/God+of+War+Norway+Event+Presentation/

I’ll wait for post-launch reviews before I get too excited. If the game is legitimately good I’ll give it a fair shake but I’m not a fan of the drastic change in tone and gameplay. Is Platinum the only company making real hack and slash games anymore?

Ready to press X to Son, I guess. I'm VERY suspicious of some of these perfect/near perfect scores, and so far none of the reviews that I've personally read were big fans of the old games, but I haven't picked up a game since Monster Hunter, so I'm in.

I look at it the other way around. Embargoed post launch day reviews are typically bad and for a good reason. Sea of Thieves anyone? Already had the game preordered and no review was changing my mind. Was expecting 86 average but these scores are amazing.

I do have to say that a week before the release is quite a long time. I honestly would like it a couple of days before because I don't want to get spoiled.

So real talk here. I love the series, I thought the changes to this game looked terrible but I was still interested. However, I just finished Horizon ZD and I was completely underwhelmed by it. Is it irrational that it's affecting my desire to get this game or does that make any kind of sense?

Uh, they're completely different game genres.

Completely different games and studios.
I played 5h of Horizon and didn't enjoy it. Yes, it was pretty and well done, but simply wasn't my type of game. I hate aiming based combat (melee isn't really an option in horizon). But I'm still hyped for God of War, even with the nagging brat. I preordered it today after seeing the review scores, if it was a 3rd party studio I wouldn't (except From Software), but Sony 1st party games are usually very well polished on release (From Software games might have technical issues, but usually are polished within their capabilities).

Given that if you have Amazon Prime or whatever with Bestbuy, preordering is cheaper at launch, and this is a guaranteed hit if you know that you want this game.

I know, but Horizon was also crazy hyped and it looks and sounds gorgeous but it fails at pretty much everything else.

That's reasonable. My issue is that GOW is sending me the same vibes as Horizon. It looks amazing, crazy polished, unreal production and yet the gameplay looks just wonky and I know there will be an emotional story that just won't connect with me. I'll give this one a go because I know it's irrational given those are different studios and different games, but I have it doesn't fall in the same traps as Horizon did.

Never in a million years did I expect this to get over 90 MC rating even if it is early still. Might end up higher than Horizon, who would have thought.

Skillup YouTube reviewer didn't like Horizon but loved this God of War, even I'm still skeptical about this God of War, his review make me feel much better about the game. Just like you I also didn't like Horizon at all. The open world is has barely anything to intract with and no real reason to explore and game plays like shooter than RPG and even the bow doesn't even feel like bow rather feels like you are shooting a gun.

I get the same vibes too, and am still tentative about GoW because I was unable to finish Horizon. I was thoroughly impressed with it, but just found myself lacking any sort of compulsion to get through the story once the awe wore off.

My most wanted game getting stellar reviews! Can't bloody wait for this! Complete blackout till the games released..must avoid spoilers..

I'll watch his video to see if I get hyped for this, especially since it's 1000% spoiler free lol. And Horizon's world is fucking terrible on so many levels, the auto climbing "mechanic" really doesn't work and I spent most of my time looking for the white or yellow climbing spot. The best thing about it would be the robot fights, but they gang up on you wherever you are which is just a pain and since the game is a shit gathering simulator it's just not worth it. I found myself just running from everything lest I have to spend another 20 minutes looking for medicinal herbs and pissed dirt. It's amazing how unengaging the main gameplay loop really is, it's almost as bad as the dialogues and holy shit those awful.

But yeah, none of this criticism necessarily applies to GOW so I'll just differentiate the games.

I had an easier time once I punted the side quests. The side quests and errands are incredibly stupid and they hardly make any kind of sense. You're really not missing much by not finishing it, the last 3 fights are alright but meh you can do better.

My, my Dunki you're so PC up in here.

I finally jumped onto next-gen and got a PS4 Slim. After playing enough XV, Horizon, and Uncharted I realized that I'm not with it anymore. Hopefully GOW saves me, or I'll be forever lost. I used to love the souls games but I'm not gonna touch them.

Two sides of the same coin, really. You don’t need to send game reviewers on an international resort vacation to play your game early.

Yeah, they have political views that they express in podcast, but I feel like they drop it when it comes to reviews. I still don't like Damiani's way of reviewing though.

Easyallies isn't exactly a journalist site anyway. They're like most youtube gaming channels because they only review and give feedback. They don't have the manpower to do investigative journalism or write articles about trends or such things.

Another slam dunk from Sony First Party Studios. Congrats Santa Monica, I had no doubts at all. One of my favourite franchises is here again and the accolades given, are those received once every generation....Can't wait for my playthrough on the 20th....

Wow, where did all these scores come from? I wasn't thrilled by the look and changes but I've always been interested in what Cory would do coming back to it. Guess I'm going to have to find out now.

Horizon always felt like a 3rd person more RPG version of Far Cry. Unlike you I did overall like it, but never found why people went nuts for it.

God of War feels like it was a game aimed specifically at reviewers as it takes from games that all are critic darlings. That said given it is getting praise from select reviewers that do like games for the actual game, I will go ahead and pick it up.

I'm just hoping for good bosses. Also hope the dragon boss is fun, I do love me a good dragon boss.

I wasnt hyped for this game due to the dull combat and the son thing. Production values and graphics look great though. I expected 8s and some 9s but 10? Damn. Many reviews praise it for the father/son relationship. Sorry that's not why I play games. No review that I've seen so far mentions the depth of the combat or where the challenge comes from, though they say the game can get hard.

I guess I am spoiled by Japanese games, eg monster Hunter or souls. This god of war really brings nothing new to the table in terms of gameplay - it's pretty and we'll done, and comes from a famous Sony studio - guess that's what gets you a 10 these days. Uncharted 4 was the same, fun for 5 hours, and then you were just waiting for this interactive movie to end. At any rate, I watched the Easy Allies review and the game seems like it might be worth getting, mostly because they mention a good difficulty and the good loot hidden behind tough encounters.

As an aside, this reminds me of black panther. It was an OK movie, but for political reasons it was praised to high heavens. I guess the best way to guage a game these days is find a reviewer that aligns with your philisophy on games and see what they think. Avoid the hype train because so far for people like me its been off (notable examples are uncharted 4 and horizon, good games, but certainly not the masterpieces ppl claimed). The only game that I think is a masterpiece this gen is bloodborne. MH World a close second.

Try Yakuza 0 it is probably my favorite series of all time. Especially if you like Stories.

First time i'm interested in a GOW game. I thought the previous games were pretty terrible in every aspect. I hated Kratos as a character before and i never liked the violence for violence sake of the previous games. Also hated how much scripted the gameplay was. Actually i didn't liked anything about the previous games.

But this game looks as if it is being made by a completely different studio. Characters, gameplay, story, art direction everything looks a thousand times better than before.
