Great video showing off the combat. Spoilers of course but no worse than a lot of reviews if you've seen those. Looks so goood. Plus this guy is funny.

I'm going to combine my two posts on this game.

I have mixed thoughts.

David Jaffe, the creator of the series, described the original God of War as "Heavy Metal (the movie and magazine) meets Clash of The Titans" and that sums it up perfectly, it was like a teenage boy's id sprung to life in the world of Greek myth, as an actual teen when the first two God of Wars were released I of course ate it right up, especially since the first God of War was the first game I ever saw nudity in, that was an eye opener lol

Yeah, it's all so politically incorrect by today's standards but so what? That's what makes it awesome.

So I'm not too keen on how this new one has moved away from all that, it just seems overly serious to me, if the original series was heavy metal (the music genre) this seems more like, I don't know, folk rock?

Tell me, I'm assuming there's definitely no "sex mini game" but is there at least still titillating nudity? That Aphrodite sequence in 3 was hot as fuck, virtual boobies is just part of the fun of this series to me and I wanna see what PS4 rendered boobies look like, if we can't have that because of political correctness it makes me not even want to play it.

That said, I'll probably still play it but it's so lame that's where we're at now as a culture.

But, to be fair, the lack of T&A is not my only issue.

For one there's the close over the shoulder camera, God of War used to be known for sweeping, cinematic camera angles, why would they do away with that for literally the polar opposite?

And secondly Norse mythology just isn't as interesting to me as Greek, although I can forgive them because they're hands we're tied, the only way they could continue to use Greek mythology would be a full on reboot since Kratos killed everyone in the Pantheon.

He did a better job of hyping the game up for me in 21 minutes than Sony did in almost 2 years.
Also someone from Kotaku good at there job? Did they hire him by accident?

I'm pretty much going to be diving into the game blindly. I only played the first GoW on the PS2 and after that not a single one. Not PS2, not on Vita, not on PS3 or PS4.

Decided to randomly pickup the limited edition with the steelbook and man now I cannot wait to play the game and am rather excited/hyped.

Yeah, he does a great job and I quickly became a fan. Subbed just now and I'm hoping for more from him.

Everyone remember Deep Down? This seems like the closest we are going to get to that game visually and animation wise. A dream come true for a huge fan of medieval action. 6 more days!

Damn. I want to watch this but I also want to play this game as blind as possible.

I totally get where you're coming from. RE4 for me was the game that gave me mixed thoughts, even after I played it. I was a huge fan of Resident Evil and I feel like RE4 with the change in perspective and lack of zombies, wasn't for me anymore and it was a sad reality. It released and most absolutely loved it but it was no longer the series I loved.

I hope that you end up enjoying this one despite the changes!

You've changed NeoGAF. You've changed.

If you like simple stories, sure. I don't. I get bored of them. I got bored of Ni No Kuni 2 recently for the same thing.

I found Horizon's story to be extremely interesting and engaging which kept it fun from beginning to end. Thought provoking and complex stories are big for me.

To each his own. BOTW is indeed simple, but it's well told and it has a sweet message of sorts and it helps that the dialogues are mostly very well written. Horizon never connected with me. It's more nuanced on the surface, but it falls apart on the dialogues and the underlying theme about corporate greed is somehow more overdone than "rescue the princess" (which isn't BOTW's theme).

The main strength of Horizon to me is the soundtrack. Just beautiful music. 2017 really was the year of the OST, with Automata, Persona, Horizon and Prey just being all around awesome.

I really don't want to get too off topic, but it's really the storytelling in Horizon that keeps it interesting. I kept wanting to know more about what happened to the world, wanting to know more about Aloy's origin, and that kept me playing the game. I thought the whole machine taking over the world part is an interesting point, but it is really how they lead you on that makes it great.

I have a good feeling that the storytelling in God of War is going to be quite the same where we start to figure out what happened to the old world and how Kratos got there.

That's fair. I'm also curious about how they deal with the series previous games as the ending to 3 didn't really feel like it would lead to another sequel. I'm also curious on how the dialogues are, I fucking hate kids and I hope his son isn't featured much but if he absolutely needs to be then I hope his portrayal is genuine.

From what I understand Kratos relies on Atreus because Atreus knows about the monsters and he knows about the lore. Remember when they meet the World Serpent? Kratos is relying on Atreus because we all know Kratos. He is combat centered. Kratos is ready to kill whatever gets in his way. Atreus is his guide because he understands the language.

I read where during development they thought of having Kratos completely unaware to what everyone around him was saying, but they found it too difficult to make.

I would say Atreus is a large part of the story. I haven't seen much, but I've payed attention here and there and it seems like Kratos relies upon Atreus as much as Atreus relies upon Kratos.

Atreus only understands what his mother has told him, so he is entering this world with stories. The stories are basically his way into this world. He doesn't necessarily know how to survive. I really enjoyed the podcast that went into greater detail about what I said.

This sounds really neat. I did see snippets of a boss fight with where the boss sounds unintelligible so maybe they did manage to implement this even if only partially.

Too much sodium is bad for you.
You replying to me? I'm not hating on Gow. All iam saying all these critically acclaimed games start getting hate eventually once honeymoon period is over. Go and search HZD and Zelda threads where you will find lot of haters for the game.

Gow will be no different.

one more week....just one more week.
Last night I spent like 2hrs seeing the best way to sell my PS4 and PSVR (I have a Rift now) to get a Pro before GoW.

Talked to a friend I trust that has a 4k monitor and pro and he said it wasnt worth it so...GoW remastered on PS5 :p (No I will be waiting by the door like a puppy waiting for its owner.)

It's sad when a reason for someone not liking a game is not showing boobs... You should re-think your life priorities.
If you type boobs in Google you will get a lot of them.
From a story point of view, it makes sense. He has a small kid with him, you don't take small kids into brothels, and even if he runs into Freya, she is more of a warrior than a sex crazed maniac like Aphrodite was.

because it has compeltly changed the game they loved before. So it is just natural to be sceptical. And as I said before. Many gamer do not trust games journalism anymore.

I really and truly don't see the point of game reviews. It was quite useful back then, when there was no Internet. But with tons of gameplay videos, gamers' comments and whatnot, professional game journalism is unnecessary in my opinion. Reinforced with the fact that my taste greatly differs from most games' journalist, I just don't care about their opinions.

Medium/Normal difficulty is probably not enough for "souls" veterans, judging by the parts of combat that are similar. No backstabs or ripostes might compensate that.

Sony needs to release a sound profile for their wireless headsets for this game (maybe Uncharted or Bloodborne profiles will be good for it until then).

Makes sense. You have plucked at my need to support art. This game is art if nothing else. However, I tried the same with HZD and I got so bored with it before finishing it. So glad I gamefly'd that one. From what I've heard and read, maybe the character development will be much better here and keep me hooked. New Plan, buy Physical copy of GOW...return to gamestop when im done.

Also don't compare this to SMITE....completely different business model and you're unfairly comparing apples to oranges.

Man, your logic is top kek. You convinced ME with the facts you provided.

As someone who games on a pro and a Sony x900e, I'd tell you it's totally worth it for 4k and hdr...

Resolution isn't everything. If you were to pair a ps4 pro with a good mid range 4k hdr tv it would definitely be worth it.

Man, I'm going on a trip I was looking forward to the day this comes out, but now I wish I was home to play

I'm not watching any reviews or any analysis. So many spoilers out there SMH.... In any case, I stopped reading reviews a long time ago anyway, but I can watch the odd video review if it's funny or a well done or properly articulated review/spoiler free, in that order....

The originals were great, they were heavy metal and fun as hell...but they didn't have that pull that I want now in my 30s, the narrative driven gameplay I like now. Dad of War is perfect for me, Artreus actually looks exactly like my nephew too so I'm RPing the hell out of that angle.

I will be getting this as soon as I finish Doom, can’t wait even if I have to admit I’m a bit skeptical about this change of route.
As and old time series lover I can’t miss a chapter of one of my fav franchises so I’m in either way.
I’ve watched some videos about combat and I still don’t know how I feel about it. I absolutely wanna try it out thou.

Agree with this. A few videos are usually enough for me to determine whether or not a game is for me.
Reviews are just for bragging these days. The "mine's bigger" showcase.

100% agree. I love the series (GoW 1 is in my All Time Top 5) and have played every one of them multiple times. But the series has to change as time goes on. Otherwise it gets to be an old rehash. I think most of us were at this point with Ascension (and a lot were by GoW 3).

Basically "Evolve or Die".

I am really conflicted. Scores are great and I love how Easy allies gives it a 10/10 but on the otherhand I wonder why a site like Polygon and waypoint are praising this game and I can not get rid of the assumption that it falls completly into their ideology which I absolute hate.

Guess I have to test it myself and I alwasys trusted Easy Allies so... Guess I will have to buy Yakuza 6 and GOW this month^^
Have you thought about reading their reviews and checking for political commentary first BEFORE you start complaning about it?

Narrative wise, the dad angle and move to Norse mythology is definitely a step down, but going God of Souls was the right move.

Narrative wise, the dad angle and move to Norse mythology is definitely a step down, but going God of Souls was the right move.
Greek mythology was drained, roman mythology is basically the same with different names. Where else would he go? Shinto mythology is too different for it to make any sense. Norse was the only viable option.

Nudity is just one of the things I associate with the series, if it's gone then something is missing.

It's not a dealbreaker but it's lame, there's no reason there can't still be a little nudity or titillation, even if it's say a flashback to a intimate encounter with Kratos wife.

I'd prefer an encounter with say a lusty Viking barmaid or something though.

It's just not that game anymore, which for me is a great thing.

There's nothing wrong Kratos evolving a bit as a character, but you can still have your cake and eat it too, like I said there's no real good reason to not have nudity anymore beyond political correctness which is the lamest of all reasons to do anything.

Greek mythology was drained, roman mythology is basically the same with different names. Where else would he go? Shinto mythology is too different for it to make any sense. Norse was the only viable option.

Which is I why I would almost forgive them just rebooting the series completely.

I love Greek mythology and it's an underutilized thing in games beyond God of War (would love an open world Elder Scrolls esque game in the land of Greek myth) and there were still little things they never utilized, like a boss fight with Morpheus, which would have been cool as hell.

That said God of War has been building up a pretty interesting mythos on it's own, I wonder if they will ever utilize the secret cinema of the skeleton of Kronos being discovered in the present day from the first game?

canceled my Amazon pre order and reserved the collectors edition from Best Buy.

My wallet has been stabbed but my shelf is gonna look nice.

Nah I dont use it anymore, I have thought about it just to play the PSVR only titles but out the ones I am slightly interested there is only really 1 that I would play (the rest there are similar games on PCVR) and recently Twisted Pixel announced a new 007xFastFurious game for Rift that looks great so eh.

PSVR money can help pay for the Spiderman collectors edition and get ready for PS5 and Xbox 4.

Norse was the obvious choice, but I think it's better for them to break away from mythology jumps in future games for those limitation reasons. OTOH, by the time they wrap up this Norse arc PS6 will be in the pipe and they could just bring back Greek again. Or just not do GoW anymore I guess.

I think the studio was kinda screwed with the cancelled game. They needed to come up with something relatively safe, and quickly. Good to see that it looks like they knocked it out of the park though.

Kind of glad Yakuza 6 comes out earlier in the week, by the time I finish that there will be plenty of information on the internet to decide if this will be truly worth getting.
Isn't it only a few days? April 17 for Yakuza, April 20 for God of War. I certainly won't be able to finish Yakuza 6 in 3 days.
